Given the Kubiak and Fox health scares, it's natural to ask -- how would the Pats handle a similar situation?

The two candidates for acting head coach are surely the current assistant head coach and the coordinator with previous head coaching experience (and a lot of HC training notes from BB) -- i.e., Dante' and Josh. I'm guessing the plan is for anything mid-season to jump Dante' up, leaving all the coordinators to play their usual roles. That goes double in seasons when Dante' has somebody like Daboli to backstop him.

The other part is grabbing a warm body or two for lower-level coaching work (film study or otherwise). First place to look is to see how much extra time Ernie Adams & Nick Caserio can put in, or squeeze away from other duties.

Of course, part of this depends on the nature of the crisis. If it really looked like a temporary health glitch, I stand by the thoughts above. If it were something so serious that it seemed likely or certain BB wasn't coming back, then perhaps McDaniels would be given the nod, as an audition for the permanent job.

I'd say McDaniels because he has head coaching experience, and Brady can more easily run the offense without him there 24/7, whereas the D would have lost not only its head coach, but also its side line adjustment maker. They would need Patricia more than ever. Another possibility is Dante, but he has never wanted to be more than the o-line coach, so I don't see him stepping in.

It would be Assistant HC Dante.....

Dante Scarnecchia (born February 14, 1948) is the American football offensive line coach and assistant head coach for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. Scarnecchia has spent the majority of his professional coaching career with the Patriots, joining them in 1982 and only leaving in 1989 to coach with the Indianapolis Colts, before returning to the Patriots two years later.

Borrowing the Chuck Norris 'fact':

Bill Belichick will never die. Death is afraid of Bill Belichick. He will never go down.

However, if he were to step away, I believe McDaniels would take over for the reasons previously stated.

Didn't Scar take over when BB's dad died? Maybe not on game day but on at least some of the prep days?

Definitely Scar.

Why scar? He has no HC experience and hates being the center of attention. It would be mcdaniels - case closed.

Dante is nororious for avoiding the media like a plague. During press week for Super Bowl XLVI, he was hiding on the field. Head coaches or acting head coaches, in this case, have to speak with the media every week. So I don't think it would fall on him if BB went down. I think the interim head coaching duties would fall to McDaniels. He's the OC and has head coaching experience.

We would bring mangini in of course .... :bricks:

But he also has a world of experience, a cool head, and the universal respect of the coaching staff and players. And choosing the steady senior hand as a short-term fill-in means NOT elevating one of the young coordinators above the other, or taking them away from their existing gameday responsibilities. I vote Dante.

I don't think that's how "case closed" works.

It would be Scar if for a limited time. Longer term probably McD.

Patjew has clearly closed more cases than TB12.

You new fans are so cute.

Scarnecchia was the Patriots interim HC for 8 games in 1992. In 2013, the interim HC would STILL be Dante -- case closed.

Definitely would have to be Stephen.

I think it would be Bill Cowher.

Case closed.

Not liking something and not doing it are 2 different things. You honestly think that Scar would not step up and do what is best for the team should he be called on just to avoid the media? Plus BB hates the media too so this would just be business as usual.

Scar doesn't like talking to the media but when he does its gold its not often, usually like once in camp and maybe one or two other times during the year, but when he speaks its usually good stuff.

I think there are several reasons Scar would be the obvious choice most stated already:

  • Scar has the most experience as coach granted Josh might have a few more games as the head man Scar has 30 years on him as an assistant.
  • Scar has served as interim coach here before.
  • Scar has filled in for BB short term during the practice week before.
  • McDaniels and Patricia being the coordinators are better off staying in their roles.
  • Scar even has a solid coach working on the O-line with him in Daboll.
  • On defense Pepper would be an obvious choice to coordinate were Patricia the choice but he has no head coach experience. Not sure who would take over OC if McD were the HC choice making him less likely for the role.
