Howe: Cap room is mainly gone

Hahaha Howe has out done himself.

He retracted his 9 million to 11 million which he "felt pretty good about"

Now is back to 15 that our guy Miguel had us at all along.

Guy jumps the gun so hard to be first on twitter and is always wrong.

C'mon, the guy was only off by $6 million dollars on $15 million worth of cap room. And he got three articles out of the cap in three days. His first article was the Pats basically have no cap money left with the rookie cap. The second article is the Pats have some money to spend, but not much. Now he can write a new article saying the Pats have some money to spend and maybe they go after a bigger name like Dumervil.

This was a huge win for Howe.

I wonder what his Boss would say if he dug deeper into his employees writing.
Every topic gets 2-3 articles that contradict each other to the highest degree until he moves on to the next topic that he butchers.

I remember once he was writing about some fine and the NFL tweet specifically said player X was not fined, but Howe unequivocally stated player X was fined.
Reading comprehension is a big struggle for the guy.

BTW, he is already hedging his bets on the rookie pool:

Finally, a source familiar with the cap numbers has conservatively estimated the Pats would need to preserve $4-5 million for the rookie pool. If they keep their five picks, it could be less. If they trade down and accumulate more picks, it would hit the higher end of that spectrum. Of course, they won't really need that money until they start signing picks in the late spring and early summer.

The Blitz with Jeff Howe & Karen Guregian | Boston Herald

Explain to me how his source says conservatively the Pats will need to allocate $4-5 million in cap dollars for the rookie pool, BUT if the Pats use the picks they have it could be less. Wouldn't the conservative estimate be what it would be if the Pats kept their picks and used them without any trades? That would be more like $3-4 million.

My biggest question is what is a source familiar with the cap numbers? Someone that can create a spread sheet and add? I could see why Howe would need such a source given he doesn't understand anything about the rule of 51 or the draft. He probably remembers hearing teams with all 7 picks usually need 4-5 million for rookies stuck the buzz word "source" in the sentence and thought he had another rock solid point for his riveting article.

I posted about the same thing in the Cap Update thread, but when you factor in the top 51 and the Pats stand pat with the 1st, 2nd & 3rd, they would only really need about $2 million.

1st rounder would be about $1.5- wipes Markus Zusevics $484k off, effects the cap by $1.1million

2nd rounder would be about $900k- wipes Justin Francis $482k off, effects the cap by $418k

3rd rounder would be about $600k- wipes Mike Rivera $480k off, effects the cap by $120k

If I am right that only effects this years cap by $1.6 million. The two 7th rounders don't even make the top 51

The Patriots have picks 29, 59, 91, 226, and 235 this year. In 2012 the combined cap hits of the players selected at those positions was:

29. Harrison Smith - $1,297,918
59. Vinny Curry - $614,880
91. Lamar Holmes - $523,400
226. David Molk -$403,988
235. Jeremy Ebert - $402,250

Which totals out to $3,242,436. That would be about as low as we'll need for draft picks this year. Assuming we trade down and accumulate picks it could shoot up to $4 or 5 million, but I doubt it will cost much more than that.

The 7th rounders probably make the top 51 assuming a pair of UDFA's make the roster like often happens.

See I think this is how people are getting their figure, they are adding up what they think the rookies may get and forgetting about the Top 51.

$1,297,918-$484,000 (Markus Zusevics) adds $813,000
$614,880-$482,000 (Justin Francis) adds $132,880
$523,988-$480,000 (Mike Rivera) adds $43,988
the two 7th rounders don't make the Top 51 and if they do it only adds tens of thousands to the cap

so that only adds $989,868 to the cap

I mean I maybe totally wrong but the writers are really over estimating what will be needed for the draft picks

Please understand that if these players were signed tomorrow at these prices the cap effect would we about $800K. Harrison Smith would replace some who costs about $400K for a cap EFFECT of about $500K.

Okay, I see what you mean. I forgot that obviously their salary would replace someone else's.

So how much room would they actually need for just those five slots?

In Howe's defense, he was adding in $6 million for Abraham.

Erika Leigh was his source.

about a million. which is why these reporters are kind of driving me nuts with their "they are gonna need $3-5 million for rookies" talk.

Erika did not say Abe's 2013 cap hit was a high $6M. I blame Howe for his own folly.

Slight nitpick - the prorated signing bonus amounts for Zusecvis, Francis, and the two seventh round picks will count against the cap. Add in $25,000 for the prorated signing bonus amounts for the UDFAs and we are talking about around a million dollars in cap space.
