How much would you be willing to pay Asomugha?

Asante Samuel is getting around $6 million a year in Philadelphia I believe. I'm not saying that Asomugha isn't a better overall CB, he likely is, but I don't think the Pats can sign him to more than that. If they do they are basically admitting a mistake and abandoning the philosophy that they attach a price tag to a given position and don't stray too far from it. I'm not one to get hung up one "messages" but IMO this would send a pretty poor message. He maybe unhappy in Oakland, but that's the worst situation in the NFL so it's not like he's a veteran that just wants one last shot at a ring, he probably just wants to play for a decent team. I have no idea if he's that "dedicated" to winning, but it seems unlikely to me that he'd really stray too far from better offers.

Clearly the Pats didnt think Asante was worth 6mil a year, I loved him here but never thought of him as a shutdown corner. I wouldnt be confident in having him one on one against WR's like TO, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitz or Steve Smith. Nhamdi on the other hand Id feel safe one on one, imagine what blitzes and coverages BB can throw at offenses knowing he has a CB that never needs help in coverage.

i know BB doesnt believe in throwing a lot of money in the db's, but Asomugha is special, and it would effectively cut down the field to 2/3 for the defense, and THAT, is what i want out of this...

also, when the other team lines up for a TD in a championship game, with a 6'5'' reciever there, i want to know we have somene capable of making a play...

Then if he does go it will be be for a first rounder, in a tag and trade much like Casssel. BB have never paid big money for corners and with Wheatley, Wilhite and maybe a.n other from the 09 draft I dont think were in the game...

I don't really think we'll get him to be honest, which is a shame because I'd love a guy with his ability here. To expensive for the Patriots to chase IMO, not because we don't have it but because I don't see us forking out good picks if they franchise him again aswell as top dollar.

Crap, I knew he was good, but didn't realize it was that good.


What we're overlooking is that this same conversation is probably going on in 30 other team's fan forums - and will or already has taken place in 30 other NFL front offices.

Don't forget, though, that number also reflects two things: (1) QBs don't throw towards Asomugha when they can throw against the other, much suckier DBs; (2) QBs don't throw as much, period, because the Raiders have an even worse run D (the Patriots' 7+ YPC average says hello).

EVERY dollar a player receives in his contract counts. Signing bonuses can be spread out, so they don't hit all at once, while salary (generally) hits in the year it's paid out and only that year.

You just made your poll completely and utterly meaningless, since you exclude bonus (which could quite possibly be half his total compensation). Then you say you are interested in cap hits, which makes the whole thing completely confused what you are looking for. Which makes the poll results themselves meaningless.

How abt sign big vince and draft a CB in the first or second round ?.
we already have 2 rookies and 2-3 CB worth keeping. if we can draft 1 or 2 we will be good as 2nd yr guys improve a bit.

also be realistic about leaving a 6 5 WR in single coverage in redzone is never going to happen. al harris got torched in NFC playoff and last week steve smith did a number on bly. even moss under close coverage beat asomugha last week. so why spend this much money then double cover anyway.

You can if they're not exclusive and you are willing to work out a deal with their current team (or pay two firsts). Asomugha is exclusive this year, but they could possibly go non-exclusive next year to see if anyone really wants to give them something for him. His franchise tag amount will be 11.7M or so.
