I have seen a lot of articles, threads and posts over the last 3 years that suggest if the team had a healthy Gronkowski they would beat the Giants in 2011, the Ravens in 2012 and the Broncos this year. Do you buy or sell it?

Re: How many more rings would Brady have if Gronkowski was healthy in the past 3 year

At least two. They would have beaten the Giants in the Super Bowl, as bad as the defense was, with the way they were moving the ball in the second and third quarters. Against Baltimore, they were moving the ball all day long but bogged down in the red zone. Hard to think a 6'7" best-in-the-game-when-healthy TE wouldn't have helped there. Hard to tell if it would have helped in Denver with the way the Pats got beaten on the LOS on both sides of the ball, but it would be worthy of debate.

Yup.

Though Gronk could have helped the Pats @ Miami and taken HFA from Denver...

I agree; I read so many posts about the Patriots needing to add weapons for Brady and it is as if Gronkowski is an afterthought.

Picture this:

• Denver without D. Thomas
• Detroit without Johnson Jr.
• Cincinnati without Green
• Minnesota without Peterson
• Seattle without Lynch
• Kanas City without Charles
• Philadelphia without McCoy

Heck we saw Atlanta without Julio Jones and that was not pretty… People don’t realize that Gronkowski is in a class with Peterson and Johnson Jr. only of players who completely change the landscape of an offense. I can tell you if roles were reversed last week and we had Gronk and Denver was without D. Thomas we would be in the SB right now.

Re: How many more rings would Brady have if Gronkowski was healthy in the past 3 year

I know who "Johnson Jr." is but I don't think I've ever heard him referred to that way.

Given that the Giants game could have been all but put away had Gronk outjumped the Giants player on that interception downfield in the second half - a jump ball he wins 9 out of 10 times when he's healthy - I think the answer is 'at least one.' Maybe last year. Probably not this year. But those two are much more conjecture.

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

I'd like to say two. But, not sure the universe would have allowed us to beat the giants.

Re: How many more rings would Brady have if Gronkowski was healthy in the past 3 year

They definitely would have beaten the Giants in 2011. Not sure about 2012 or this year.

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

I voted ONE, because in the NFL football, there are just way too many moveable parts, too many unique rhythms to each game, too many minute adjustments and so forth to think that the absence of one player can dictate wins and losses.

Who would have thought we could have won 12 games this year without 4-5 of our top ten players.

I don’t use nicknames it is a carryover from my days in the air force…

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

i voted for one too

too many 'variables' in a NFL game

but of course he would have been a factor

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

I think they would have won vs Giants. Real good chance last year as well. Real test would be in superbowl. This year DEFINITELY would have had HFA and would be playin Seahawks not Broncos. Hawks are tough, but so is Brady.

Also Thread Title should have included Talib bein healthy last 2 yrs as well.

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

I'm going to be a negative nancy here, so if the odd contrarian post isn't your thing, move along.

But this is really the same question as how many games we would have won this year if Hernandez wasn't a murderer. Or how many games we would have won if Tom Brady hadn't gotten injured for a whole season basically. It kinda doesn't matter. That's not what happened. And while we try to pretend it helps as a barometer for the future, it doesn't do that either. The whole point of these things is seasons are often random and unpredictable. (Or worse yet predictable- Gronk is hurt every year.)

I think our bright side isn't how many games we could have won "if x" but rather how many games we won in the circumstance we were in. That's a true bright side. Not the other non-reality stuff we play through in our heads. That's better left to Madden where a fatass like me is the greatest QB of all time.

Gronk hurt every year lol, nice exaggeration

four

it's Gronk, for cryin' out loud

I made two points.

1. The team did well above expectations and it makes sense on trying to focus on that than play a what-if game, because where is that line drawn? "What if Tyree dropped it?" "What if we drafted Joe Montana?"

2. These things have limited meaning going forward too, and I think that's true enough. If people are choosing to draw conclusions from "what if he wasn't injured" the purpose of my statement is "what if he is again?" That's why these scenarios are just so unproductive. You can't predict injury, although I think we've seen this year that it IS more likely with some than others. (Amendola is an A-lister for that, Gronk maybe a B-lister.)

I don't think my point was off base at all, despite how you're choosing to interpret it.

I'm proud of what the team did, but I don't think we should use the "what if" to try and hope the team will hit a Superbowl next year if they're not more proactive in the personnel department. And since they're perennial playoff contenders, and that is primarily what sells tickets, I'm not sure their goal is Superbowl or bust despite our own hopes at the end of Brady's career. I think BB would say "our goal is to win everything in every year." And that's fine justification for business as usual, but if people are looking for more than that, they may be in trouble.

That's a lot to digest, to be sure, but I don't think it's worth misdirecting the conversation I was trying to have just to avoid thinking about these things.

Somewhere between 0 and 3, with 1 being the most likely answer, IMO. I think they'd have beaten the Giants and Ravens, but gotten steamrolled by the 49ers.

Re: How many SBs would the Patriots have won in the past 3 seasons with a healthy Gro

I say one.

I believe we win Super Bowl XLVI and the AFC Championship against the Ravens last season.

Still not confident we beat Denver two weeks ago or San Francisco in New Orleans....but I think the Denver game has a different feel and the 49er game goes to the wire.

There's a lot to be said about Gronkowski's abilities on it's own merit, but his effect on Brady's confidence can't be understated either.

Why isn't zero an option?

There is it is called not voting

I actually messed up in the OP and I tried to go back and add it but I couldn’t do it through edit.

I say 1 for sure. Giants in 2011. Instead of Wes dropping the ball, the pass would have likely gone to Gronk in that situation.
