How long do you think RG3 will last in the NFL?

His best case scenario.... Daunte Culpepper. Another big QB with decent passing skills who was also a running threat. Eventually, the extra hits wore him down and within the space of 5-7 years, he was basically an average QB or worse.

Durability is also an issue with these guys.

In 11 seasons, he only started 16 games 3 times. You could even compare him to Jake Plummer, another guy who could throw but also was a threat as a runner. He only started 16 games 4 times in a 10 year career.

I think I've been doing those types of QBs a disservice as well as confusing the issue by calling them scrambling QBs. Scramblers move the pocket while still completing the pass. These guys are runners.

My response has been posted already more than a few times so I'll just say this: F*** YOU rat faced lunatic. I hope you get fired

Your not mad because Shanny has had Belichick's number for most of their meetings, are you?

Wow, that's a little harsh. Not sure he is deserving of all of this hate.

Shanahan did play him in 2 back to back games, had doctor approval for those and this game, and RG3 was ok. Besides, I'm pretty sure RG3 wouldn't have wanted it any other way especially with the way Kirk has been playing. The idea that Cousins could come in, carry the team further into the playoffs and potentially losing his job didn't sit well with RG3 either. Unfortunately he didn't think about the fact it could cost him more than just the starting job for the Redskins.

.

Yes but he re-aggravated the injury during the 2nd drive. After that, it was clear he was hobbled and had no business in the game. Of course RG3 wouldn't have wanted to stay in, I'm pretty sure I heard Drew Bledsoe wanted back in the game after the Mo Lewis hit. Doesn't make it right.

I agree with you that I thought he should have been pulled earlier, but when...do you pull him at the top of the 2nd, or half time, or 3rd quarter. How do you really know though? They had doctors. We don't. And not even doctors get it right. And this is a guy that absolutely did not want to come out no matter what either and said he would have come back out on the field even if he did get pulled.

Personally I'm a bit tired of all this over protection for rushing quarterbacks. We don't hear any of this about running backs. It's not ok to rush quarterbacks but it's perfectly ok for Adrian Peterson to carry a team ALL season despite just coming back from such an injury?

Where is the reason and common sense anymore? He got hurt, it's unfortunate but it can happen to anyone.

The fact is if you are a rushing QB, this risk is part of the game. There is an entire offensive system designed to suit those skills and the rushing aspects are REQUIRED in order to run it properly. There's no way around it. People need to understand, it's not an option for Shanahan to limit his running if they are running the spread option. If you're going to be a dual rush QB, learn to run and protect yourself like a running back does and try to limit your exposure. This is one of the main reasons coaches didn't believe in this offensive system at the NFL level but the other dual rush QB's have not gotten hurt and are doing just fine.

For the record, Redskins.com will be hosting a press conference by Shanahan at 3 ET.

I remember posting in the game thread in the 2nd quarter, that if he continued to look as bad next few series I'd go with Cousins. He only got worse so I'd say sometime around half I'd have pulled him. When it got to the point where he literally limped all the way to the sidelines on an 8 yard gain I was dumbfounded why he was still in. Just no excuse to have somebody that wounded in a game.

You're pointing at guys who were injured previously or have the risk of getting injured, but were in playing shape AT THE TIME. It was pretty clear midway through the game at the latest RG3 was not.

Running QBs rapidly become ex QBs. The only long lived running QB, who continued to run, I ever saw was Fran Tarkenton. Most either don't last, or become pocket passer like our own Steve

Tarkenton scrambled, and did not run, except to AVOID getting hit. He threw the ball when he couldn't escape, sometimes completing a play that was lost otherwise.

Interesting enough the only scrambler, as opposed to a runner, that I have seen since Tarkenton, is Russell Wilson, who is almost exactly the same tiny size and body build.

I did. And I do feel that way. But I'm posting my opinion with the understanding that I'm not an expert.

Randall Cunningham was one of the better scramblers and runners at QB I have seen from the past several decades...he lasted 16 years in the league, but he was bigger and stronger than RGIII

This kid has already had an ACL injury in the past. We're not talking about a first time injury. What happened to RG3 is the result of playing his style in the NFL. What happened to him last night is the result of a head coach who is obsessed with becoming relevant again to the point where, in an era where Goodell screams about safety every chance he can, Shanahan didn't do the right thing with the player who's supposed to be the future of the Redskins franchise.

Shanahan should be fired today.

What makes me agree with the above is that moment toward the end of first quarter (about) when Griff was hit on the sideline, and could just barely make it back to the huddle. When you have a qb like Griff you have to have a backup you trust... and use him at the necessary moment. Which if it wasn't before the game started, was the moment i speak of. pathetic.

And is there any evidence that Shanahan listens to them or consults with the doctors during the game? We sort of have evidence that he doesn't. Andrews went as far as to publicly express serious reservations about RG3's playing so maybe it's just speculation but i doubt if had Shanahan approached him after RG3 really started to look incapable of moving properly that he would have said "no biggie, keep him in." Plus this is still kind of secondary to the fact that he was totally and completely ineffective.

Quarterbacks are more important than runningbacks and they just bet their next three drafts on him. I don't see why this is a problem plus I don't see what AP has to do with it, he was healed from injury and he sure as hell would have been pulled if he started hopping around on one leg and averaging -3ypc.

My problem is that some people don't understand that quarterbacks who run the spread option MUST run and say they should have their running limited. It's as simple as that. To run the spread option, you need to run. So dual rush quarterbacks, are not your typical quarterbacks either. They are part passer, part running back.

And when your back up is a pocket passer, it makes it really hard to switch to a pocket passer and still be effective. You can't prepare for two offensive systems for every game and this was with the playoffs on the line.

Griffin completed more than 65% of his passes this season. However, in 3 of his last 4 games, he completed 57.7%, 50% and 52.6%.

The way to keep running QBs healthy over the long haul is to limit their running, to teach them to succeed in the pocket, and to keep them in the pocket when they are injured. Just ask Steve Young.

And that might be so, but I'm pretty sure Steve Young didn't run the spread option. These quarterbacks' primary reason for the success they are having is due to them running the college spread option at the NFL level.

Take the rushing element away, and you no longer have a spread option offense. You also don't have the success anymore.

Sounds like you should have a backup that is also a capable running QB then.

Dude is in his first year and is already banged up, he has been injured a lot and mind you he is 23 so his body heals faster. The hits will surely take a toll on his body and playing style when he gets older, See Vick for example.

The redskins gave up two first round picks to get him, they should use a little bit of common sense in the way they handle him. If he felt he wouldnt be able to play today he should have approached his coach and should have said that "Listen coach i dont think i can lead this team to a victory today" what is he afraid of? that Cousins will end up taking his job like what happened in SF? i highly doubt it, Of all the rookie QBs drafted this year RG3 in my opinion is the most talented. But i am getting a little tired of his hero act.Same thing with Big BABY Ben, he falls down and winces after every down, but then he acts like a hero and comes to play on one leg and with a single arm functioning and then struggles to throw the ball 5 yards.

Someone needs to tell RG3 that the redskins fans will forget him in a few years if he is done in a year or two in the league, No redskins fan will tell their children a decade down the line "Hey Mark we used to have a QB who was the bravest of them all, he would take a lot of hits and still come back to play on crutches". RG3 needs to use some common sense here, The redskins are a good team and i see them winning the NFC East if he stays healthy and the team plays the way they did this year.

A friend of mine summed it up nicely

"We lost today because our coach thought the kids pride was more important than a victory"

Excuse me injuries are part of the game but this should be noted RGIII is already a avery good passer and with his legs he is double lethal...that knee injury is unfortunate for him but he will heal. I will add that Giants Defense that made Tom Brady scared and uncomfortable was absolutely clueless vs RGIII. He's something special and will grow this his talents down the road will be unmatched...mark it down.

That would be the smart thing to do, but this is still fairly new in the NFL. Even Carolina has a pocket passer behind Newton and he's got 2 full years experience with it. They are totally committed but still no dual rush back up. The Eagles were smart though to back up Mike Vick with Vince Young last year. However, not only do we not have enough spread option QB's yet, but also, it's still in the experimental stages. Teams still don't yet know if it will be sustainable.

Hence, probably why Shanahan took Cousins. Just in case.

He has the skills to be more of a pocket passer, and that's how they have to use him. If he keeps running as much as he has, he's going to get murdered in this league before long. Unfortunately for Griffin, who seems like a good kid, I don't think Shanny the Tranny will ever figure that out...

Steve Young has said that he never would have made it in the league if he hadn't learned to stay in the pocket more and to learn when to run and when not to run.

Randall Cunningham went from a guy getting 942 yards rushing on 118 tries to a guy getting 110 yards rushing on 18 tries in just 2 seasons, and to never again carrying more than 65 times in a season, and that was in the middle of his career, not the very end.

RGIII will learn the same thing that Young did, or he'll be done, in terms of being a legitimate starter, far more quickly than need be.
