How Belichick wins with less

Bum Pillips was talking about Don Shula in his prime, but his earthy wisdom still applies today with Bill Belichick.

"He can take his'n and beat your'n; and then he can take your'n and beat his'n."

But in reality, Bill's teams alwasy have superior line players on both Offense and Defense.

I think it's doing a great disservice to the players by calling them less or possessing less talent etc. It's not their fault recruiting is an inexact science.

That said points have been made. BB knows what he wants and looks for them.

That article is not saying that they are not talented but just that a lot of the players were not wanted by other teams and that based on their draft (or undrafted) position they have been able to win anyway.

Belichick had to use more cast offs and try different things simply because he blew the Maroney and Chad Jackson and, to some degree, the Ben Watson picks.

The thing is, though, these aren't Matt Millen-type picks. I agree that ultimately none of them worked out, but you can't really argue that it was a mistake at the time for the Patriots to take any of them.

[Also, the 2007 draft is sui generis: the Patriots were stuck with a slew of late-round draft picks in what they saw as a weak class, and simultaneously entered the draft with one of the most talented rosters in NFL history.]

The inference is there.
