The draft is such a crap shoot, even with so many high picks it is likely that only 1 or 2 will ever become starters. They can't afford to swing and whiff on all the picks but I am interested in opinions playing it safe versus swinging for the fences.

I can't quantify it but it seems like one homerun (all pro) from any of the units (LB, O Line, WR, D Line, etc.) is worth more to a team than 4 reserve \ backups.

Our philosophy has always been to spread our wealth, so that if one part goes out, another can plug in. BB is always big on versatility for the same reason and to present an even bigger set of combinations for the opponents to have to decode our offense. Del Rio of the Jaguars has said that preparing for the Pats is like preparing for three different offenses.

Teams that pay on the high end (e.g., going for the home run) are okay as long as their investment stays uninjured, but once that player goes down, the caliber takes a steep nose dive as well.

to answer specifically....

i think we have enough above average backups, now we need to upgrade teh starters

i would give up 4 quality backups for 1 all pro at either OLB, DE, or WR

I agree that we need to upgrade the starters, but where do we have above average backups? That may have been true in the past with Phifer as the 6th LB or Graham as 2nd TE but I wouldn't consider any of the Pats current backups above average.

We need game-changing, game-breaking, difference-making, impact players.

Obviously we need a home run IMO.

Id like to do both by trading up and getting an NFL ready prospect like McClain. Solid player with no off-field problems. Fills a need at ILB (not the biggest need but a need non the less) and is considered a "safe" pick as opposed to a risk such as Dunlap.

LB and TE, along with WR are our weakest points

i believe we have excellent backups at CB, with wheatly and wilhite, and at S, with chung and tank williams

also believe we have very strong backups at OL, with kazcur or vollmer, and levoir

furthermore, i believe morris and taylor are excellent and definetely proven backups..

the pats need a pass rusher bad jerry hughes, is the best pure pass rusher in the draft.

jerry hughes, may never be a starter in BB system he dose not have the size he wants in a LB but he would gave 7 to 8 sacks a year as a 3rd down pass rusher. so if the pats draft someone like that im ok with them not starting but if they draft a lot of ron brace, type guys then i would be pissed lol

Redskins go for home runs.

Wilhite's an ok backup played well at times and was exposed at times, Wheatley who knows but something's not right there. I guess you could say one of either Springs or Butler as depth for CB which would help your argument. Chung the potential is there, Williams was released in training camp. McGowen? Otherwise I agree with good not great depth at RB,OT (we just need a good starters) and the weak spots at LB, TE and WR.

If Butler and Wilhite are quality backups, then we should be considering Wilson with our 22.

the one thing i dont know about NFL is the draft prospects....whos wilson?

I was being generous with Wilhite but he is young and if he's fourth or fifth on the depth chart that's fine. Butler however is a future starter in this league, maybe even this year. What's your issue with him? I would have no problem drafting Wilson though. Can't have too many quality corners.
