Thanks for playing hard and playing hurt, Ellis. Best of luck to you.

I look at his career here in two ways...

He started for the team when some thought he might not even make the roster and was very servicable and held his own against guys that were mostly smaller receivers, the big guys usually burnt him and I will also miss his amazing punt returns,he was our best guy at that.

The thing that always annoyed me about Hobbs was when he was in a situation to make a grab at the ball or interfere with the receiver he usually ended up in numerous crucial PI call against him that did affect the outcome of some games,He was a bit too aggressive at times.

I have not liked Hobbs ever since the Super Bowl. I watched him give up that TD that helped the Giants win the game, and then last year that performance continued. He is a good return man, but he is not a good corner for THIS SYSTEM, IMHO.

Yes. Lets just forget that the Patriots wouldn't have been in that position if Asante hadn't been beaten twice by David Tyree. Or if Asante had actually made the interception on that pass that was over-thrown by Manning..

And no. The performance didn't continue last year. The opposite CB gave up more stuff than Hobbs did. But that also wasn't helped by a lack of a pass rush from the LB corp as a whole.

Re: Ellis Hobbs to Philadelphia

Tate replaces Hobbs return ability.

And Hobbs was a nickel at best with Butler and Wilhite breathing down his neck.

Good move to dump his salary now to make cap space for future acquisitions. And don't forget they got an OG to boot.

Tate isn't going to be ready this season and will likely end up on the IR.

As it stands now, Maroney is the Pats best kick returner. Followed by Faulk and Welker. Wilhite, Wheatley, Butler and Greg Lewis have never done returns in the NFL or have very little experience. This will definitely be something to watch in TC and Pre-season.

Hobbs was a solid #2 CB who was also one of the best in the league at KRs, as others have stated. The other team ALWAYS had to be weary of him breaking one.

In the olden days Pats starters would play in these charity hoops events. My brother got smacked around by a few Pats players. Good, the dirty hoops player deserved it.

I'm with your earlier comment about Hobbs having played hard and to the best of his ability for us.

But I am SHOCKED to hear that your brother plays hoops - I seem to recall that you're around 5' tall, so that means he's either a Muggsy Bogues type or your milkman is a big dude...

Re: Ellis Hobbs to Philadelphia

Im pretty surprised, but I have no problem with it. As others have stated this trade is entirely justifiable.

Hobbs was a great guy and a solid player. Hopefully he wont be missed.

I'm a bit over 5'9" Welker sized and played hoops, but my brother is 6'1" and could jam in his day before he got too old and heavy.

Re: Ellis Hobbs to Philadelphia

I think we were the 31st ranked secondary last year - and Hobbs has to shoulder a lot of that blame... our free agency moves more than the draft made this possible

This is false. The Pats had the 31st ranked pass defense. And that goes squarely on the entire defense. From the lack of a good pass rush to the issues at the LCB position, to the safeties. Its all one unit.

Uh oh...the Michael Holley suicide watch commences at 10 am tomorrow morning...Hobbs was his ultra-binky

Also Rodney being unable to knock the pass out of Tyree's hands and the inept O-Line that played like they would have rather been anywhere but the SB.

FINALLY, this guy is off our team.

Our pass rush wasn't great, but it's hard to generate a pass rush when it's 3rd and 4 and Hobbs is 10 yards off and the opposing team can just do a three step drop and complete a quick slant. Loved him as a KR but now that we have Butler and Lewis, we should be fine in that department.

Awesome news.

Guess you didn't watch Samuel doing the exact same thing. Or Ty Law. Or Ty Poole. Or Deltha O'Neal.

I can't believe the sympathy for Hobbs around here. The guy cost Tom Brady 2 super bowls. I am elated we could get SOMETHING in return for this choke artist. I am ELATED!

This is a complete and utter fabrication on your part.

The Hobbs apologists need to face the fact that Belichik sent this guy away for two 5th round picks. That says enough about what our coaches thought of his value. The guy was awful. THe only thing that could have made this better was if we traded him to an AFC East opponent so I could laugh at them whenever we played and HObbs gives up an easy first down.

Coming from someone who doesn't understand the game, I am not surprised that you blame Hobbs for everything. He wasn't awful and its complete folly on your part to say so. It shows you don't know anything about this game called football or what the job of a CB is supposed to be and how it relates to the other members of the defense.

Hobbs was a little work horse here in the return game and the secondary. He got dinged up a lot due to his size, but he seldom missed a series let alone a game. Lots of kneejerk fans here focus on the plays he didn't make, often through no fault of his own, and totally ignore all the plays he did make.

This is the link to his bio on the team website, not that his critics will be bothered...

Ellis Hobbs III - Official New England Patriots Biography

Rather than say the Hobbs haters are clueless idiots, i'm just gonna say I agree with MO!

Those two 5ths (2) were packaged into a 4th that was higher than the 4th or better he'd be worth in 2011 comp if he was allowed to walk as a UFA in 2010. Hobbs shut the giants big WR down for most of that game. He had the only pick of the game, and was not the only CB to give up a TD or DB to find himself in an impossible position because the pass rush couldn't get Eli down...He set them up well in the return game as well, only for some reason the offense couldn't convert a third down to save their lives...

One of the things that really annoys me about fanboys is their overwhleming need to have scapegoats.

well said again MO. I wonder who they will blame this year? I'm gonna predict that in the first game, Springs gets burned for a TD, and the mindless fans will suddenly say he sucks.

Like anyone Hobbs was better with better players around him and he struggle to be #1CB. To his credit he was small and he often played hurt and he always gave his all for the team

I wasnt a fan of his dancing around having made a tackle 20 yards downfield but he was a good contributor on what was a poor secondary the last few years

With the Butler draft we were top heavy and I think Bill sees Bodden, Wheatley and Butlet as the main guys going forward - Bodden playing for contract. In that case do the trade, give the player a fresh start and cleat some cap

win win all round and thanks Ellis for all you did

End of

Hobbs was a starter last year and played hard but he was just a #2 safety in our defense. The signings of Springs and Bodden, plus the draft of Butler made Hobbs expendable. I was actually wondering, after we signed Bodden, when this would happen.

Would it be ironic if it were to work out as a Patriots - Eagles Superbowl in Miami, with Brady throwing at Asante and Hobbs III?

Thanks for your service Ellis.

The difference is size in our secondary compared to years past is huge. I expect we will see much more bump-and-run this year.

We learned how good Neal is, and how very bad Yates is.
