Belichick and Saban: The Stories Behind Football’s Most Powerful Friendship | SI

On his first morning as head coach of the New England Patriots, a FedEx package arrived on Bill Belichick’s desk. Inside was a résumé, plus film breakdowns and scouting reports, rigorously prepared to the specifications of Nick Saban.

“Nick called,” Belichick says. “He said: You've got to hire this guy; he’s one of the best I’ve ever had. Honestly, you get a thousand names like that one when you are a new head coach, believe me. But when Nick recommends somebody like that? You know he doesn’t recommend 50 guys to you.”

Belichick hired a 24-year-old Michigan State graduate assistant named Brian Daboll for a defensive quality control job. Daboll spent the next two years in that role—insiders call it a “20/20” gig, because you work 20 hours a day for less than $20,000 a year—when a higher-paying offensive position job came open.

“I told him, look, I'd love to give you more responsibility, but this job that you have is really an important job,” Belichick says. “If you find me somebody who can break down film as good as you can, I'll get you out of this job tomorrow.”

No problem, Daboll said. He had someone in mind: Josh McDaniels, who’d been a fellow GA at Michigan State under Saban. A year later Belichick had the same conversation with McDaniels, who suggested Nick Caserio, a former teammate at John Carroll University in Northeast Ohio.

2 of bamas claims during the Bryant era are whack because they claimed them from polls that didn’t do rankings following bowl games.

Notre dame and Alabama were the 2 best teams in 1973, notre dame beat Alabama in the sugar bowl and Alabama claims a championship because the AP for whatever reason at the time didn’t do polls after bowl games as I said before. This would be like notre dame claiming a title after 2012 because there actually a poll that didn’t do a final poll after bowl games

If notre dame used the same standards to claim national titles. They would have over 20
1978 to me is tainted as well. Bama won half a title (split with USC) when they beat top-ranked Penn State. They finished with one loss - to USC (in Birmingham by 10 points!). USC had only one loss also. Today there would be no doubt - USC would win the title.

Of course an undefeated, untied Bama finished 2nd to “Tie one for the Gipper” in 1966.

The two masters of the “pattern matching cover 3 defense” sitting down and talking football is masterful. Their defense has won 12 titles across the pro and college landscape. No other defense can make that claim.

Ps: Watching them breakdown film of other nfl team’s offenses would be even better than a casual chat.

Jeebus, I don't know how I'm going to get through the two programs tomorrow night - - - and then THIS gets announced??????????

We really don't deserve all this.

.

After Defamegate et al: yes, we do.

Most of what HBO puts out is absolute top quality, this should be awesome.

Rockne is a legend but he died in 1931.. as great as he was never could understand the comparison between a coach of Football today compared to one from 88 years ago..

Saban is the here and now, and as great as he is now he will be passed by another College coach sometime in the future...

IMO it is simple, Saban is the greatest College Football Coach of all time based on today's standards .. even though I am a Notre Dame diehard..

I look forward to this HBO Porn they claim is about BB and Saban...

As a fellow ND fan, do you think Saban would win titles here?

I’m clouded on this. BK got us to the playoff, and a championship game but Saban is clearly a much better coach in my opinion. He also gets much better players but some of that obviously has to do with the schools they are at. I’m not convinced Saban would’ve won championships as Michigan state

I have a deep fascination with Knute and the ND box. My uncle brought it back

You're obviously more focused on the 50% of this documentary that I am not.
:D

HBO Sports & NFL Films combine to present Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching

Combined with one-on-one interviews and extensive inside access captured over the past three decades, BELICHICK & SABAN: THE ART OF COACHING includes topics never publicly broached before, including their fathers’ respective influences on their careers, their tenure with the Cleveland Browns organization in the 1990s, and how they connect with the newest generation of players. The film features interviews with peers, assistant coaches and family members, including both coaches’ children, Hall of Fame tight end and former Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome, Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart, and Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels, among many others.

You play within the rules but come on, saban gets a top.class every year for a top school in a sport where reporters not on field play decide who's the best.

College ball is lame

Yeah you’d think with all the data they have available to them, they’d be able to design some sort of algorithm for the top 25 teams.

Who has watched it yet? One little thing that I took away was how resentful it was to them when assistants gets jobs else where and they take personnel from them.
These two are a real peas in a pod.

p.s. I am not saying I have a link;)

It was even more interesting than I thought it was going to be!

Great behind the scenes stuff and historical video I had never seen before.

Really a new angle documentary that adds a different view to the library.

Solid documentary. Pretty funny how they meet with each other once a year and the first thing they sit down to talk about (after asking for privacy to "catch up") is football. Not how's your wife? How's the kids? Just straight into coverages and alignments and personnel groupings. Shows how hardwired these guys are and that they really love what they're doing.

Watched this last night. Sort of a fluff piece but still really good.
