The last we heard from the commish was that he would add more penaltys to the Pats if more stuff showed up...the next thing we hear is all the tapes etc. have been collected and destroyed...why dont we hear comments from other teams? Dont they want to know what was in those tapes? Is it possible that the tapes may have contained evidence of other teams doing the exact same thing? Sounds like something has been swept under the rug.

Sorry Bill, this is way out of character for you.

The commissioner just wants everything to go bye bye. He couldn't care less about doing the right thing.

They are all tapes of other defensive coaches... Nothing to see, they leaked the other tape, so they destroy everything else. Everything they got is surely nothing more than what they showed on Fox, taping the defensive coordinators and down/distance. I'm sure BB have a compiled list of notes on coaches, including tendencies and other stuff, some things may or may not have been learned from taping the coaches.

This is exactly how Goodell wanted this to go.

So, the media and the fans of all the other teams who have been made to feel unworthy by the Patriots over the past 6 years went ballistic when the news of cameragate broke. The media played it like it deserved equivalent billing of a capital crime.

Goodell and the NFL say the matter is closed. They've destroyed the very tapes that many media geniuses said would be scrutinized for further violations in order to take the Patriots to the woodshed. Goodell's intentions in this situation are now obvious. This was the only way he could lay this topic to rest without saying or implying by a lesser punishment that there are degrees to which one can break the rules, as it was important that he act decisively and quickly. He actually did the best thing he could for the NFL and the Patriots.

Goodell got what he wanted without compromising the integrity of the rules. The media and the fans got football.

It wasn't good for the NFL's product for this to drag on and have people keep talking about it. Money talks and they want to keep making it. I also don't think the Comish is all that knowledgeable about football and was why he seemed so "shocked" that a team would be trying to 'steal' another teams D signals. I'd guess he got educated a bit since.

It is also not in Goodells best interest to continue to embarass and piss of the #4 most influential person in NFL... he had to move on, as I am sure there were other owners who did not want their product tainted anymore than it already was.

Still would like to know how the tape made it onto FOX..Gooddell is hoping things quiet down and the media spotlight goes away..At least until the next Bengal gets arrested...

I do not think Goodell handled this situation correctly..If he explained and clarified the punishment and why it wa so severe..he could have unmuddied the whole "cheating" situation....instead, he chose to be silent and let many questions fester. the same with all teh attacks on teh Patriot's Lombardis..the league's integrity is under attack and..he is silent. He was overwhelmed with all of it and..while at first it was all about fairness and honesty..I think he realized Pandorra's Box was open and needed to be shut quick..so that is what he did. The quicker..the better..and no words. Not really a great leader..and for those who think he's the Judge Landis of football..he's not even Judge Lopez...

If this were the case (other teams being taped) then the Pats wouldve been punished more....thats what Goodell said. He said if there was evidence of more spying, he'd up the fine. If you were the Lions or another team that accused the Pats of spying, wouldnt you want punishment?

Bill had proof.

Or how about,

"Christ, Rog, now that everybody called out the Pats they're starting to call out each other."

"Rog, you sure it's a good idea to encourage destruction of the image of the National Football League's franchise of the decade? Should this really be the story of the year, all year long?"

"Okay here's what we do - we demand all their tapes, declare victory and go home. Tell them not to keep a copy and burn the lot of them."

Same basic result. There's no proof of either of course, and we do get the benefit of the doubt. Yes, the burden of proof goes the other way, and the assumption must be that no conclusive evidence was on any other earlier tapes. But do you see grand apologies from the Steelers or the Chargers or the Packers or the Eagles, saying "Oh sorry, it was just that one Jets game..."? Of course not.

At least with the BB apologies (plural,) and the tape-burning party by the NFL, the story just seems not to have the legs it did before. Now it's all "we'll never know how many games they cheated in...." But you can only write that so many times.

A "next cycle" is set to emerge. Either that, or <gasp> the whole thing might die from lack of fuel.

They're going to dock the Pats two snow tires and a partially eaten begal.

Whoever leaked that tape inadvertantly ended the witch hunt. The NFL isn't going to press this any more because their own accountability is being brought into question over "confidential" meterial being broadcast on national TV.

Hopefully Belichick doesn't sneeze the wrong way while he's still under the microscope, because it looks like as far as this incident goes, its dead and buried.

Now it's time to focus on the games. :rocker:

Like most in the media, you didn't grasp this from the outset. Goodell never said there would be more punishment based on the tapes - only if something other than/beyond the tapes was uncovered, like the audio taping of signals or jamming radio frequencies. But nobody was able to do more than allege other violations - they offered the commissioner no proof.

The tapes were destroyed because nothing of further value could come from posessing them beyond having some mole in his office leak them and further embarass the league office. I just hope for Roger's sake he supervised the incineration himself...

Mo's right on this part, but one thing makes me go "gni gni gni," which is my three stooges way to convey continued worrying.

Okay, so the tapes are gone and done with. Allegations about the radios, etc., currently remain just allegations.

So basically all this should be over, barring any tweaking of the league on the part of the Pats, just to tweak the league.

Okay, so we shouldn't be dumb enough to do that, right?

But then I see the injury report. Even using the new formula -- which is pretty much developed to avoid subjective info going on the injury report, and therefore opening it up to "joke" reports like BB uses -- well, ours is a mess, from the POV of someone who wants to get good info out of the injury report.

Boy that shoulder's been bothing Tom somethin' terrible these last six years...

I would have thought now would be the time to suddenly have this pristine, readable, easily digested injury report, but no.

This leads me to believe that BB might continue to tweak the league on what he perceives as details.... and that would be asking for it.

We shall see. I'd give a repeat of repercussions of the last couple of weeks zero chance, if it were not that we're still having fun with the little things like that. Won't be too much fun if another big thing comes up.

Dunno who Judge Lopez was/is ....
but that's still pretty darn funny!

I think Jets Commissioner God-ell
handled the controversy itself execrably
... misunderstanding NFL intel-gathering ... succumbing to vanity because his prized personal reform was flouted
... pandering to the media hyenas.

But i also think he came to his senses quickly (or was snapped around by some wiser owners)
and CLOSED IT OUT decisively ... and properly.

no. The pats got punished for having a camera on the sideline. Goodell said there would be more punishment if there were anything else, meaning any OTHER violations. All the cases of camera on the field were punished with the fine and draft pick loss.

Yes. Everything Mo said. I can't believe how many times poor Mo has had to post this. I posted it within hours of Mortensen's story coming out last Sunday. There's only so many times you can say this. THEY NEVER INTENDED TO WATCH ANY OF THOSE TAPES AND MATCH THEM UP TO GAMES WE PLAYED TO SEE IF WE "CHEATED'. How can you even do that, it's impossible.

I always say the media doesn't know what they are talking about but never was it so obvious as this last week. "It's not over"...."looking for more violations" blah, blah, blah. I wondered if I was losing my mind, or my ability to read and comprehend. But no, turns out THEY were not me.

Jusge Lopez is one of teh TV judges...much lesser known that Judge Judy or Brown....hopefully it's closed and gone.
