Re: Guess who draft pick Wilhite's agent is.

No its not tough to argue when the Last CB drafted in the 4th round by this team just signed a megamillion dollar deal and when arguably the best corner on this team was a third rd pick and when another solid FA loss was a Undrafted FA who started in a SB for us.

This teams success at drafting Corners speaks for it self. and is too good for me to give up on a player just because we have less room for rookies than most teams and cut a 4th rounder last year.

I can see both sides of it. But I have to tell you, selective memory is an interesting thing. Here are all Pats DBs drafted during BB's tenure:

Code:
Rk Year Rnd Pick Pos Tm From To AP1 PB St G Int Sk College/Univ
1 2008 2 62 Terrence Wheatley DB NWE 0 0 0 Colorado
2 2008 4 129 Jonathan Wilhite DB NWE 0 0 0 Auburn
3 2007 1 24 Brandon Meriweather DB NWE 2007 2007 0 0 0 16 Miami (FL)
4 2007 6 202 Mike Richardson DB NWE 0 0 0 Notre Dame
5 2006 7 229 Willie Andrews DB NWE 2006 2007 0 0 0 30 Baylor
6 2005 3 84 Ellis Hobbs DB NWE 2005 2007 0 0 3 47 6 1.0 Iowa State
7 2005 4 133 James Sanders DB NWE 2005 2007 0 0 1 41 4 1.0 Fresno State
8 2004 3 95 Guss Scott DB NWE 2005 2006 0 0 0 11 Florida
9 2004 4 113 Dexter Reid DB NWE 2004 2006 0 0 0 39 North Carolina
10 2004 7 233 Christian Morton DB NWE 2004 2006 0 0 0 14 1 Illinois
11 2003 2 36 Eugene Wilson DB NWE 2003 2007 0 0 3 62 10 Illinois
12 2003 4 120 Asante Samuel DB NWE 2003 2007 1 1 3 75 22 Central Florida
13 2001 3 86 Brock Williams DB NWE 2003 2004 0 0 0 12 Notre Dame
14 2001 6 200 Leonard Myers DB NWE 2001 2003 0 0 0 17 Miami (FL)
15 2000 6 187 Antwan Harris DB NWE 2000 2003 0 0 0 52 1 1.0 Virginia

So if you just want to look at the first 4 rounds (discounting 2007 & 2008), you have:

Hobbs (3rd) - Good, starter
Sanders (4th) - Decent, starter
Gus Scott (3rd) - Bust
Dexter Reid (4th) - Bust & felon
Wilson (2nd) - A few good years but faded. Call it a push.
Asante (4th) - Homerun.
Brock Williams (3rd) - Huge bust, don't think ever played a down.

So that's 3 hits, 3 busts, and a push. I'd say anyone who wants to be pessimistic about Wilhite certainly has a leg to stand on.

ETA: Left Sanders off my list.

He was talking about CB - two of your busts are safeties and the other, Williams, had a knee injury in his first camp; I believe he tore his ACL.

It pisses me alot when hobbs is called a avg player. he is a starting CB in a sb team and i think BB likes him enough to sign him. That is going to throw a wrench when that happens.

People forget that with new CBA a cb can be signed for only 3 yrs so he will never have the time asante or hobbs had to develop so if he has potential they can sign him for cheap long term.

Well, if you eliminate everyone you want to eliminate, you are then basing your opinion on a sample size of two. I'm not a statistician, but I'm not sure that two is a statistically significant sample size. ;)

 Last I saw, all rookies drafted after the first round can be signed to contracts of no more than four years. . . .

I get the wink but Safeties aren't CB. And torn ACLs make a difference. It's not like anyone said "he sucked so he doesn't count as a bust" :)

I personally agree and think both our CBs have a chance to be players. But I just think it's tough to extrapolate that from the two previous picks being good. I'm basing my opinion more on how they have looked so far and how their strengths seem to play into the Pats system.

Thank you belichick fan for picking up my argument in my absence...use his answers to some of those so I don't have to repost.

I am not trying to extrapolate that he is going to be as good as Asante or Hobbs or even Gay just that it was a weird statement for the guy to make that he though Wilhite will be out of the league before he has to negotiate a 2nd contract.

All I can extrapolate from the previous success is that I expect Wilhite to be a pretty good player. But expectations and reality can be quite different.

Also what is so crazy about using only CB as a sample. If I was talking about Guards would I have to inlcude Matt Light or is it OK to be position specific or do I always have to talk about the units as a whole.

as this argument has unfolded we have not only used The 3 good rookies the coaches have found we also turned to guys they found on the street in Mooreland and Poteat, and we mentioned Troy as well. So the Coaches have proven to be able to find guys who can Play in this system. Aside from a few FA busts I would say this team has Found CBs as good if not better than anyother position.

I don't think Wilhite's choice of agent tells us anything about how he will perform on the field, but it tells us two things off the field:

a) He's a dumb ass, who just got drafted by a top franchise and stuck a finger in his new team's eye with his choice of agent. Chayut filled his head with visions of "sticking it to the Patriots" so we know that's Wilhite's attitude. More importantly, the Pats know it. Dumb ass.

b) The Pats won't even think about a second contract with the guy. Knowing his agent, they'll use him up for three years or whatever and tell him not to let the door hit his agent on the way out. That's cool. At least everyone knows the "parameters".

Whoa whoa whoa. What's with this adding facts to the discussion?!?!?!

He was probably Wilhite's agent before the draft and if that was the case the Patriots already knew Chayut was going to represent Wilhite.

Uh oh - you are letting common sense get in the way.

It's no biggie at all...wait to the NEXT contract...my guess is he doesn't stick that long..or is NOT the outstanding CB on the team..
