There is at least one writer that sees that as not a sure thing, but a distinct possibility.
After some analysis, stats, positives and negatives on Green, here is his conclusion:

At first glance, Green projects as a backup with upside. Expectations must be tempered, but don’t rule him out as a candidate to assume Donald Thomas’s old role as the No. 3 swing guard.

Green provides the Patriots with a veteran who can battle it out with 25-year-old utility man Nick McDonald, 2011 fifth-round pick Marcus Cannon and last year’s undrafted pick-up Markus Zusevics. But unlike Green, those three have the flexibility to spell in at offensive tackle.

All in all, the signing comes at a good time for the Patriots. Starting right guard Dan Connolly is coming back from offseason shoulder surgery and the squad’s other reserve interior linemen – Penn State’s Matt Stankiewitch, Kent State’s Josh Kline, Michigan State’s Chris McDonald – are all undrafted rookies.

By no means should Green be considered a 53-man roster lock. He should, however, be considered a viable backup with starter work under his belt.

That’s not a bad consolation prize at this point in the free agency period.
The Patriots now have 89 players on the 90-man roster; 14 of whom are offensive linemen.​

He doesn't have ideal height, but his long arms have helped compensate for that.
And as others have noted, he could be the 2013 version of Donald Thomas.

Mankins & Connolly will need replacing, possibly as early as 2014.
Green might not be the starter at either spot, but he should help make the transition from
broken-down geezers to healthy youth a bit easier. Sure as heck better than signing Rex
Hadnothing.

Tyrone Green is a great replacement for Donald Thomas and Pats didn't have to shell out 4 yrs & $14 mil either. Thomas has appeared in 43 games and made 21 starts, Green 41 and 28 starts. Similar players in that they both have some physical liabilities but they get the job done. Just like Thomas, Green gets walked into the pocket if he doesn't keep pads down and doesn't have great pass pro range but he fires out there in run game and has strength to push DL where he needs to get them in passing game.
