Gronk, Pats trying to reach new contract

Sorry, folks, it was sarcasm...I'm a self-confessed Patriot and Belichick honk...
No need to apologize. I thought the sarcasm was pretty obvious, but everyone's sarcasm meter needs calibration sometimes.

Thank you.

His injury history and "injury-prone"ness is an overblown thing anyway. The ACL thing happens to tons of guys, and the broken arm was a fluke. Other than that he's played 15/16 games every year. None of his NFL injuries or missed time have been directly related to his back surgery in college.

Keep trying. I know that sooner or later someone will find this reply clever, funny or fitting. Sticking to it is the key. I believe in you.

On one hand the whole point of extending early was up front protection ($$$) for Gronk in trade for a more team friendly deal for the Pats, long term. Did he give money back when he was hurt? No? I didn't think so.

Now, on the other hand, this is Gronk we're talking about. And aside from his importance on the field, you think you'd want to take care of him as the message sent to the locker room otherwise could cause serious issues moving forward.

You can't operate on principle alone, in a vacuum. And frankly, I'm not worried about Kraft's great great great grand kids college fund. I'm a little out of patience for the ol' douche bag. Cap space, I care about, but they can find a way to make it work for Gronk.

Gronk will get a raise eventually. He's locked up until 2019 so there's not much of a concern right now. Lots of guys have to be resigned. I'd love to see Sheard signed, he's important to this defense. Of course Collins, Butler and Hightower need new contracts as well. Gronk is further down on the priority list right now. He will get paid handsomely though.

You're right that his deal doesn't stand out as a pressing need to rework, but they've done this with other cornerstone guys before. An extension another 2 years out would lock him up thru age 32, and free up cap money to make him whole in terms of paying him more commensurate with his value to the team and as arguably the most valuable skill position player in the league, and create more flexibility do those other deals particularly if they're looking at adding space for new long-term deals to 2018/19 where the cap hits of his current deal spike up by about 40% compared to the current year value. Seems like a no-brainier to me.

Yeah they have. That's just part of that long article. I guess the main part is they've started the talks. There is a part that says "nothing imminent" so there's that.

I don't see anything in the article that provides any evidence that the Rosenhaus brothers are here to talk about Gronk's contract. Apparently they were seen at the stadium. There is no evidence as to why they were there. The article then makes the leap that they are talking about Gronk. They say "source" but in today's media world that is absolutely 100% worthless. Most of these outlets use themselves as a source just to create a story.

And this is post #52 about it.

The Rosenhaus' walk on to the practice field at Gillette, and all of a sudden the Pats are working on a new contract for Gronk???

Keep on believing...

Most teams can't do a Favre to Rodgers transition. History tells you that when all-time great QBs retire, franchises have a period of turbulence. I want a happy gronk all locked up for the remaineder of Brady's career. I think that's of paramount importance rather than what they promise him for 2020 or 2021.

Gronk is set to make $8.25M/yr over the next 4 years thanks to the option bonus he was paid at the end of March.

I think that signing Sheard, Hightower, Butler, and Collins to extensions would be more conducive to a stronger team in the long run.

I love Gronk. He's paid very well currently. An extension now isn't going to free up more than $1.5M. An extension for Hightower, on the other hand, could free up quite a bit of money..

Can I say 'sign the beast' if he's already under contract? I've just always wanted to use that. Lol

This is cool and all but man can we have either HT or JC done before the start of the season...

This was exactly my thoughts, I kept looking for articles with quotes or anything really that would back up the notion that they were there for Gronk's deal and couldn't find anything

But that's another handicap we have, the media goes out of their way to try and hurt the team by creating controversy.. with Collins, Butler, hightower and Sheard needing new deals, the media has chosen to instead create a controversy about Gronk not being paid enough with 4 years left in his deal

And as you stated, an anonymous source is literally worthless.. reporters can make anything they want up.. the 2 magic lines are "my credible source told me..." and of course "I can't reveal my source"

Im sure they'll want to revisit Gronk's deal and make sure he's happy, but there are 4 other key players that need to be addressed on defense, plus Nate Solder is on the last year of his deal..

All these guys at the end of their deals that need to be extended and the media is focusing on and running with Gronk isn't paid enough on his deal that runs thru 2020
