Same here. He looked like a guy whose knees had taken a beating and had a bad back. It took him a few games to get back into football shape, and he’s still not anywhere near what he once was, but he’s looked better in the past four games than he did throughout 2018 (with the exception of Week 1 that year).

He is generally in a better situation. With Evans, Goodwin, Brown and him he will get a lot more opportunities against lesser coverage in both ability and number. Add in that he is a much safer outlet for Brady against the blitz because the two of them are actually on the same page.

The times where he was the #1 thing to take away are mostly over. Good for him.

Gronk also has 4 TD's... equal to Cam's passing TD total.

This is the key, even with that he has had has many games (5) under 30 yards has he has games over 50 yards and this week was his first game over 80 yards.

His numbers look good because he's stayed healthy and has averaged 42 yards a game. Which is his 2nd lowest per game average of his career, only behind his rookie year when he averaged 34 yards a game. He's about the same as he was his last season with the Pats, a season where he had more games under 50 yards than over 50 yards.

2018 Gronk (reg season)
13 games
75% offensive snaps
72 targets
47 receptions
682 yards
14.1 avg
3 TD

2020 Gronk
78% offensive snaps
12 games
62 targets
37 receptions
505 yards
13.6 avg
4 TD

That's why it was a great trade for Tampa. Gave up a 4th for him on a decent contract and he has been productive for them in the pass and run game. Worked out perfectly.

Yeah that’s the one thing that’s stood out for me in the Tampa games I’ve caught this season - his blocking is still A++. If that team actually decided to commit to running the ball to pull those defenses out of Cover-2 Robber and other hybrids of that scheme, he’d be even more valuable to them.

That is a fun stat that is relevant to Patriots fans (even if we don't want to admit it).

Definitely a fun stat to point out, but to be clear this isn't a case of "We never should have gotten rid of this guy". We all know he wasn't coming back to play for the pats.

This deal is as win win as a deal gets.

Perhaps on the surface but that is not what Gronk was saying last year. He said playing for Bill took a toll and how much he hated that wins were not celebrated at all just back to the grind. I do think Bill wore him out (like he has with many players) just as much as his body breaking down. Plus it was never about Bill for Gronk, it was always Brady. He said he would never play for another QB but Brady when Bill tried to trade him in 2018.

I agree in terms of the coaching between Bruce and Bill but also just as much of a difference in the environment as well. That also effects how a player performs as much as the coaching.

His stats really aren't that much different than 2018. Let's not act like Gronk is playing like prime Gronkowski

I also thought he was done but having a very solid season.

our passing offense must be in the mix for some statistical records (lowest passing tds by a starting qb min 14 starts by the end, lowest yards by leading wr, etc) at least in the 16 season modern era

I haven't watched him closely like I did when he was a Patriot but I'd imagine he's not getting the attention and physical abuse that he got when he was a Patriot and teams were trying to defend him. I'm sure his numbers would look very different if he was.

I'm really mostly joking about the "Gronk gave up like Brady" comment but it still doesn't sit well with me that he would only unretire if it meant getting traded to the Bucs to play with Brady. It did end up giving NE something in return when they'd have had nothing, but it's a good thing I'm not in charge of those decisions because I would've never traded him just out of spite

Who said that? I think most of us are surprised he has looked this good.

Does he look that good though? He just had his first 100 years game of the season. Nothing he is doing is surprising me.

He's a complimentary decent tight end right now. Like he was in 2018. I just don't see the "OMG LOOK AT HOW GREAT GRONKS PLAYING!"

When he's playing about the same level as 2018. But with less coverage going his way.
