Come on man, you know how controversial the French/ German relationships of the 1890's are around here. You just said this to stir up a **** storm.Since we're reaching back into history here, I compare this to the Dreyfus Affair where a French officer was unjustly accused in 1894 of selling state secrets to the Germans. He was railroaded by certain factions in the French gov't with falsified docs etc.. Eventually he was exonerated and someone else was charged with treason. (Hope that's not too political for sensitive types)
