Greg Bedard on depth chart and base defensive scheme

Maybe Fells is where he is because he has to go somewhere.

Fells really seems to be more Gronk than AHern. However, with only three guys it's tough with two different categories.

Yes, he should be listed in both spots, but Bedard limited his 'depth chart' to only listing a player in one spot, thereby apparently confusing some readers into thinking players cannot play a position Bedard did not list them at.

A 2 gap player is responsible for 2 gaps, that is the gap on either side of the player (OL) across from him. For example, Vince Wilfork on the nose in a 2 gap would be responsible to engage and control the C and cover plays in the C/G gap on both sides.
A 1 gap technique means the player attempts to penetrate through one gap. For example Wilfork could line up anywhere from head up to in the gap, and is responsible to shoot that gap and penetrate.

Thanks. I appreciate the simplified way you explained it. I have heard the term for some time but was not sure exactly what it meant.

Isn't it kind of hard for a 2 gap player to be responsible for the player opposite him and the two gaps on either side? To me, it seems very difficult.

The idea is to control the blocker and play leverage that allows you to read the play and move in either direction.
It is important to understand that while a player is responsible for 2 gaps, each gap has 2 players responsible for it.
