Greg Bedard: All the Pieces are in Place

According to Reiss today (Quick-Hit Thoughts, ESPNBoston.com), Vollmer looked stiff & finished last among OLmen during the pre-game run, and couldn't touch his toes during the stretching exercises...just sayin'.

I saw that too. Here's hoping he gets some good massage treatment before the season opens.

what else could reasonably be expected of him at this point

"All the pieces are in place" .........

except for a competent backup swing offensive tackle.

I think Marcus Cannon has demonstrated he is adequate as a swing OT. He has even shown he can be a marginal starter butr needs help to do so.

Volmer is the starter and in the Giants game he should get 10 snaps or so, and be prepared to go for Tennessee.

I for one am quite excited for the season. Our defense feels like it's ready to take it to the next level.

Im a little nervous about the OL.. but all said and done, I'm quite optimistic.

Oh and Mallet played so well in the last game that I think we're going to have to rethink the saying: "He has a cannon for an arm".

Bedard has his film review up. Brady was blitzed 50% of his snaps, Mallett zilch. Says we were thoroughly vanilla on both sides of the ball and Brady missed Welker. Thinks Vereen opened the door for the second coming of BJGE when he hobbled off the field early. Doesn't expect them to carry a FB since none of them accomplished a thing all pre season. Says Koppen is still struggling and Mankins looked slow in his first action. Claims Cannon didn't play half bad.

Game breakdown: Bucs 30, Patriots 28 - Extra Points - Boston.com

This Patriots team isn't close to gelling. I'm expecting a struggle against Tennessee in its home opener despite the young quarterback.

I think the D has and is way ahead of the O. i just think the combination of assessing/assimilating new parts, a patchwork OL awaiting rehabbers and MIA RG and the bizarro schedule this pre season and Bill's choices of how to manage it have conspired to give Brady little opportunity to get any kind of rhythm building. We haven't seen the starting O on the field as a unit yet. Which is why we may see most if not all of it for at least a quarter Wednesday. They then have 12 days to recoup and refine and sharpen execution in practice. Otherwise it's 17 days between games with little success to build on.

Basically. It was basically Tampa Bay's Superbowl ( based on how they played), yet they lost a few guys to injuries while the Pats came out essential unscathed despite a weak effort.

After attending the 3rd preseason game in Detroit, it was apparent that the two games were similiar.

It would not be shocking that the Bucs notes the Lions used last year's game as a springboard.

However, what is different this year is what exactly was the offense doing and is this the "offense"?

As the first half wore on a general debate in the three sections arose on when exactly was the last time was the "I" formation run....let alone so much?

How did people ever throw out of the "I" formation?

Expected some hurry up.....and got the slowest offense ever witnessed. What's up with that?

The defense was much less concerning.

Spikes is a beast......when Spikes tackles....they stay tackled. Besides, with even a rudimentary input of "game planning", the Bucs offense would have been shut down.

Having Welker solves about 75% of the problem. On the sack/fumble, TB patted the ball three times. Usually, the ball is on it's way to WW.

Pay the beast!!!!!!!!

The real problem was the pace. That was slowest offense in tempo.

It's simply hard to fathom an extremely high paced offense with a vast, varied combination of formations and personnel packages with what showed up Friday.

I wonder if our offensive starters playing might depend on how long - if at all - the jints
starters on defense play, especially the starters on the DL.
