Godchaux Speaks Out on his contract

@Water Boy

Here some highlights of watts.. an under the radar signing that I feel will pay dividends. I like Godchaux as well.. but if so choses to sit out our defense isn't necessarily screwed against the run.. Jennings is always in the backfield and one the best run players, Bentley, Barmore, peppers.. we have some dogs...

Again.. goddy is a nice player, however IF.. he chooses to sit out the other guys they have watts and hill will see more time.. with D lineman it's all about repetition, getting a feel for how they are being blocked.. Barmore for example gets 2 sometime 3 lineman. Vince did as well.. Godchaux sometimes gets handl with one blocker. So I hope he does get extended I'm all for players to get thier $$.. but he also needs to be realistic.. you got extended when you really didn't earn it.. like the Parker extension.... so I mean I agree with you just stating the facts.

In past instances when a guy wanted a contract like law, branch.. they were high level players for the team. Ended up elsewhere even. I guess alot will depend on what happens with other D tackles right?
Watts is a terrible run defender, the last time he started his defense was the worst run defense in the league. If he’s anything he’s a third down pass rusher.

Putting someone “bad” in there is not an answer, except to the question how to field a bad defense.

PFF has his run defense at 76.6... good enough for this team..

PFF has goddy at a 50.2

Well he says he wants a fair contract, something that works for both he and the team... I hope he does get something.. but is wolf looking at the film on him last season or the 50.6 overall grade from PFF?...

Which of the other players has a history of being a very good NFL 330-pound run stopper?

PFF said Stephon Gilmore was a bad player back in 2016, their player grades are garbage.

The Patriots had the #1 rush defense last year in yards per attempt, I wipe my azz with PFF player grades.
I pointed this out during his DPOY season in 2019. They had a bad grade on him that showed up during one of the prime time games.

Was goddy the only one stopping the run..? Do we have 11 guys on defense or just goddy?.. last I checked Bentley was punishing RBs, peppers, Jennings... please don't confuse my post with being against him.. he's a sold player but we have some hitters on this defense.. he's not the only run stuffer..

And wasn't there a game a couple of years ago (the Papa Bear MNF disaster maybe?) that showed Dee Wise being their highest-rated defender on the Pats at the time...?

PFF always comes up with weird stats. I think they do this to try to stand out as if the fan watching is missing something and sign up for their service. In 2021, they were pushing Jalen Mills as a lockdown CB during the 2nd half of the season. It was ridiculous.

Fans hate PFF if it has something negative to say about a player or team, but they love it when it helps them win an argument.

Naive question from someone who doesn't know x's and o's very well. How much is Godchaux's skill dependent on the system, so that if the system were to change under the new HC, would he not be as valuable?

I'm confused. Some say we don't need a true NT anymore. ANd you say that Godchaux is undersized at 330. We are top 5 in stopping the run. I think that Godchaux has a lot to do with this.

Ekuale and Pharms are the backups. If he goes, I suspect that we will be signing a free agent AND drafting a DT high in the draft.
When the Pats signed Godchaux, he was not 330lbs. He was 310lbs. And he was that for the 1st couple of years with the Pats. Maybe he's put on weight since then or maybe the Pats are lying through their teeth about his weight. I don't know.

I can specifically remember going back and forth with the ChickenLittle Brigade over this.

I say that BARMORE and Tavai have had more to do with the Run defense being as stout as it has become. I'm not saying Godchaux is bad He's not. But let's stop pretending that he is Vince Wilfork out there.

I think ownenu and Dugger got massive extensions...
Onwenu and Dugger got extensions commensurate with their skill. As did Henry.

Beyond them, all the other contracts are either 1yr prove it deals or 1yr+ deals where the team can easily walk away.

I'd rather give players like Pharms Jr. and Sam Roberts the playing time than him. He too old and not worth the money that he's probably seeking. There will be better and younger options just in FA alone, not to mention somewhere in the 2025 Draft.

Pharms is 6'2-300 lbs and Roberts is 6'5-300 lbs. They don't play the same position as Godchaux. Roberts if a 3-4DE / 4-3 UT. He's not a NT. Neither is Pharms for that matter. Not at 300 lbs.

He is 330 lbs. That is undersized? Also, his current DC refers to him as a NT (see my post above with quotes from Covington).

He was 310lbs for his first 2 seasons with the Pats. Not sure when he magically put on 20lbs, but he looks the same now as he did when he signed.
