The old school NFL guys except that douche in Miami love BB. They realize signing UDFA’s who become starters is like hitting on an early pick. Butler, Jackson, Jones, Stork, etc. And, picking at the bottom of reach round year after year is difficult.

Belichick is easily one of the best GMs of his generation. Finds undrafted or 6-7th rounders who end up being superbowl mvp's or pro bowl cornerbacks. Every GM has flaws and Belichick's is drafting WRs but he can still find cheap WRs or trade for good ones.

Patsfans board gonna be triggered with this one...

But I tend to agree that BB's picks have pretty good value writ large. No one hits on everything.

And while UDFAs aren't technically picks, BB's ability to find gold there is pretty amazing.

If one includes UDFA being part of a draft I agree.

What's the difference if you hit on M. Butler, JC Jackson, David Andrews as UDFAs or second round picks?

On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

    - Ron Borges, MSNBC after 2001 Draft.

Why would you include undrafted guys in a draft class? Their designation is "Undrafted".

Bill's drafting has been pretty good over the last 20 years but not so great over the last 3. For instance, why didn't he draft a TE last draft with a deep TE class and a desperate need at that position? Also, Bill likes to draft a lot of "projects" and not a lot of near sure things (or as near as you can get in the draft...I know it's still a crap shoot for pretty much every team).

I think there's some difference in compensation.

There's no denying BB's GOATness and overall drafting record. The Last few years haven't been his best though.

Yeah, no kidding. Tick, tick, tick.

Or maybe all that energy has been drained off by the corona threads.

Speaking of which, where does Brandt stand on...oh, never mind.

    The best at drafting WRs.

    OK

    The best at drafting RBs.

    YUP

Ive always wondered. If BB was such a draft guru then why did he wait until pick 199 to draft Brady? Dick Rehbein was begging BB to take him way earlier too.

He is the guy who took Jermiane Cunningham and not his college teammate Carlos Dunlap. How could he watch all that tape and come to that conclusion?

The problem with being a Patriot is a fan will scrutinize every pick and label them (bust, good, great, etc). Basically, an objective comparison cannot be made. Someone with a lot of time on their hands (now for instance) can look at each team's draft for a time period and frame an opinion. I really don't care for Gill Brandt. Although, I have doubts regarding some members here.

I don't think Bill is better than his top peers at talent selection. What makes him great is he has a value system that he sticks to, he gives himself many more at bats than his peers and he tries to build a team not a collection of talent.

Ernie and Bill treat it like a doctorate class in economics which in many ways it is. They just use draft capital and value against salary to gain a competitive advantage. When a vet starts making more salary than what they think his value is they let him walk and take the comp pick to get more value. They may take a short term hit in talent at a position but they're usually in a better value situation. Sure you would love to still have Trey Flowers, just not at 17/year. Simon, Winovich, Wise.....not nearly the player Flowers is but combined they make less than a third of what he makes for 80% of the output.

We compared the Steelers 2nd round picks vs the Patriots a few years ago during one of the "Patriots can't draft in the 2nd round" rants. I forget the exact numbers but the Patriots and Steelers had roughly the same percentage of hits in the second round but the Patriots had twice the number of selections in the same time period. Bill knows that as good as they are they're going to miss. He's giving himself more hits by playing the numbers.

It's not like any of this is a revelation. We've had this discussion a lot over the years.

Anyone who uses a 2 on Richards? Don’t get me wrong B.B. is great but drafting is not his strong suit
