Funny that. We see the old hard number types of stats getting ridiculed as 'not telling a complete story.' Yet the made up subjective PFF BS now that's the goods? Me, I'm over thinking WTH was wrong with things like the final score, completion %, TOP, YPC, 3rd down conversion rate for/against, pressures etc being useful performance indicators? I just can't take anything run by Chris Collinsworh seriously
Like anything 'new' stats are good and bad depending on what they actually are. Expected Yards per Attempt for example seems to be one that's a pretty good indicator.

PFF does one thing really well, aggregate actual counting stats. Anyone relying on them for their grading is tilting at windmills. It's far too subjective. And it does gaslight fans into thinking Verdarian Lowe, Sidy Sow and Mike Onwenu are "good", actually, when your eyes tell you a completely different story. Like for me, personally, a 'QB Pressure' has to actually affect the play for it to matter. For PFF it doesn't. And since they don't know what a particular blocking scheme is on every given play (they guess), they assign pressures to the wrong people way, way too often. Same with 'win rate' for offensive linemen. It's awesome Morgan Moses "wins" his matchup against his guy when it's a run to the left side. PFF counts that.

From where I sit PFF just 'counts' too much that doesn't pass the Mach 1 Eyeball Test and discounts things that do
That and Chris f'n Collinsworth

Yeah, PFF has been invalid since forever, but they may have just lost all credibility when they showed that D-Hop graphic during the Ravens-Bengals matchup, ranking D-Hop 10th out of 124 WRs.

Like all stats, they are just a perspective and nothing more. It's up to the interpreter. Unfortunately, we all tend to give into stats that reinforce a bias. Half the time I look a stats now, I end up just going to a game-by-game log of each stat, down to the splits, then really consider the team those stats happened against.

Averages can just be so skewed by one game. But ultimately I'll resort to watching bits and pieces of games if it's a team I haven't watched yet before really interpreting the stats.

Half the issue with stats is the authority with which they're presented. Ignore the authorities or claims. This includes rankings of complex multi-variable stats, such as position rankings and **** like DVOA.

...and **** like DVOA.

Kinda sums it up for me right there. The 'adjusted value' is entirely subjective. I think the bulk of fans used to look (some of us still do) at the hard numbers and then do a deeper dive where they felt it was warranted. You and I (obviously some others here too) still do but I regularly see DVOA and PFF player grades used in the media as though they're hard numbers akin to point differential when in reality they are thoroughly subjective.

Now if you'll excuse me, there's a cloud I need to shake my fist at

Good on Matt Patricia. He's lost a ton of weight.

Didn't realize that Brady was wearing glasses now.
It’s not for the reasons we would wear eyeglasses fyi

Next time he's getting his face reshaped, maybe he should get his eyeballs reshaped too...

Can't have the GOAT walking around looking like a substitute math teacher...

Things like DVOA aren’t stats, they’re someone’s interpretation of stats.

General statistics are easy, football isn’t that complicated. I suspect the proliferation of gambling adds a layer of confusion.
