Julian Edelman doesn't tend to get the credit and respect he deserves around the league, but one former player took notice in a recent ESPN segment, putting him ahead of some notable names which created some controversy.

Andy Reid is the coaching version of Peyton Manning shouting Omaha twenty times, moving all his receivers around pre snap, calling a bunch of audibles and then throwing a 3 yard screen pass.

    I think you are correct.
While this was the ref’s explanation, it appears as though former head official Mike Pereira has stated that this was incorrect, and the only reason why Mariota was able to catch the ball was because it ricocheted off of a defensive player, first.

I think the trumping rule (over any other rules) is that if the ball is tipped or otherwise "blocked" ALL offensive players become eligible as far as recovering the ball. So if an OL caught that ball, and ran into the end zone, it'd still count as a TD. That Mariota is an eligible receiver because he was in the shotgun, is irrelevant.

The crazy thing is that if the refs had called the Mariota fumble as fumble, that game could have been much different. The refs are just terrible.

It’s all relative in most cases. If I had more money I’d probably bet more

Both are true. Any player with an eligible number (i.e. not 50-79) lining up more than a yard behind the line of scrimmage is an eligible receiver, as is any offensive player after the ball is touched by a defensive player or eligible offensive player. So Mariota was doubly eligible for the pass.

That's because Triplette is an idiot. Once the defense touched the ball it can be legally caught by anyone, even interior linemen. So what Triplette said, while true, was completely and totally irrelevant on that play.

For what it's worth, it's not just being tipped by a defender that renders everyone on the offense eligible. If it bangs off an eligible receiver, it's fair game then too.

Where's the rule that makes that illegal? There is nothing in the official rulebook (see Rule 8, Section 1, Articles 5-8) that says an eligible receiver cannot legally catch his own legal forward pass. In fact, the definition of the "Illegal Touching of Forward Pass" penalty specifically says it's only illegal if the ball is first touched or caught by an originally ineligible player (or one who went OOB not as the result of a defensive foul and was the first to touch).

And there is no language saying that an eligible receiver who throws a forward pass is now an ineligible receiver, either.

    Good point.

Actually, "eligible receiver" includes the defense. The definition of eligible receiver starts with "Defensive players", in fact.

Well if the refs had called the Kelce fumble a fumble, then things would have changed as well. KC fans can blame the refs all they want (it's literally in the fans' Bill of Rights), but over a long season, you get as many of those calls FOR you as well. Fans just never remember the "good ones".

BTW- feel free to remind of this post the next time I go ballistic when the refs blow a call against the Pats. ;)
