FYI: Winovich is a very solid pass rusher

He had 3.5 sacks going into week 17 and recorded 2 more sacks against one of the worst teams in the NFL inflating his number to 5.5 sacks. He needs to get stronger against the run and is easier to defend when teams can focus on him. He's a nice complementary player, but needs more talent around him to be effective.

He's a poor man's Tully Banta-Cain.

3rd and long specialist whose value was diminished because 3rd and short was more the norm this past season

Yeah, people were way too high on him before this year and way too low after this year. Hopefully the team doesn't overcorrect their evaluation of him in the same way that we do.

You sure about that?
Idk GIF

Simon is done and Winovich can't stop the run enough to play 3 downs. We need 2 solid new edge players next year.

yeah, great.

still can't set the edge

If the Pats can restock the shelves, he doesn't have to. There is nothing wrong with having a pass rush specialist who only comes in on second and third down. Back in the day, the Pats had a lot of specialists like that like say Ted Johnson who was mostly a run stuffing LB.

year 2 is in the stat book... have high hopes for him in year 3.

The price is right for a situational player, he might self motivate and improve.

That's not just on him. Our LB unit was badly depleted this year and that has a big impact on what the defense can do outside. Without a good LB unit your edge guys get pulled in to help in the middle, or at least are aware they might need to be, and that messes up the dynamic on the edge pretty badly.

BTW I still feel Winovich is a bit misused in this defense. His build and speed tell me he could be a very nice OLB rather than an edge guy, which he's a bit on the small side to play edge IIRC. Linebackers are the jack of all trades of a defense, they're the strong force holding the atom together. A guy who can play a LB position is kind of wasted playing a specialized role

Is it all on him? Depends on what his defined role in the defense is. But it is a glaring weakness in his game. As for size, he might be 10 pounds under but he's not significantly undersized for the role.

Could he be transitioned to an outside lb role? I dunno... Depends on if the role calls for coverage, run stuffing or pass rushing... I tend to think the same liabilities might crop up

Wino also loves Portsmouth NH too
