Former Patriot David Andrews Believes Lomu Will Push Campbell For Starting Role

Yeah think?

Lomu beats out Campbell, who won't beat out Vera-Tucker for LG. A healthy VT that is, a perennial issue.

Lomu-AVT-Wilson-Onwenu-Moses.

Let Campbell ride the pine if it shakes out like this. Gotta play your best five.

A healthy AVT is ELITE. And I love Lomu.

Can’t wait to see which poster says Andrews is full of crap and how dare he say that.

That would be a twist.

He said this the day after the draft and I listened live to the context of what he was saying.

I'll boil it down like this: David Andrews believes Campbell is the Patriots long-term LT even after the drafting of Lomu, and that's because Campbell is more talented than Lomu, as Andrews said, but that Campbell will be pushed by Lomu, because all players are pushed by competition.

AVT is not, and never has been elite. is he good? sure. Two seasons ago he was good. Missing a year? that never helps.

Think Lomu beats out Campbell? Not going to happen. WC is a beast. The Beast is our Left Tackle.

and if I am wr-wr-wr- incorrect, then thats a good problem to have

Competition is good.

I agree. I'm a staunch supporter of Campbell, but if Lomu ended up beating him out at left tackle then so be it, those who play the best at a position should be playing it. I don't think we will see competition at left tackle in camp, but I can see a possibility where if Campbell were injured and Lomu filled in and showed he could play the position better it would lead to a real battle for the position. However I expect Campbell to make a significant jump in his 2nd season, and will have an outstanding year: Either way they have done an exceptional job of rebuilding the OL in just 2 offseasons. It should be a strength for years to come.

and that's because Campbell is more talented than Lomu,
That's not the issue. The year we had Brian Winters at RG he was clearly the most talented player on the OL. At guard. Not tackle.

But length matters. Nothing will ever change that on Stubby.

Lomu is very talented and has the length. Can't have another disaster like last year's SB.

This is the same guy who said that Verdarian Lowe would start over Campbell last year, and that Spencer Rattler would have a better year than Drake Maye. State doesn't base his takes on logic or performance, he bases it on who his draft binkies are. He hated the Drake Maye pick and the Will Campbell pick and completely disappeared from this forum when both proved him 100% WRONG. Now he's back spewing the exact same crap in the offseason, when nothing is determined by performance, and he can get away with spewing complete garbage takes.

They are the same size and play the exact same way. The length? Arm length? That's what you're hung up on?

Campbell was clearly playing injured last year.

AND besides all that, Lomu is developmental. He's nowhere near as advanced as Campbell was coming out of college.

I'm not saying he won't eventually play there if Campbell flubs, but I am saying that Andrews wasn't saying that he would, and also that Andrews recognizes that the team has no intention of moving Campbell (he's been told this by key people behind the scenes).

Brady viewed every QB on the roster as bushing him for his job, which seems silly but its true. It was a mentality he had for many years that drove him. If a QB had a better discipline than him, he would make it personal to prove he could be better. So this type of thing with Lomu and Campbell cannot be taught any other way. Will knows he is on notice, even if he had an excuse with an injury. That does not mean he is in danger just yet of losing his job, but he totally gets that this league is about performance. Lomu will push him hard and we will see a better version of Campbell this year. Its not a sin or a failure if he has to switch to LG or RT. There is no shame in it either. Just win games.

Is it weird to think Campbell might be a fine RT if Lomu is the LT? He won't see as many of the elite pass rushers on that side so his arm length is less of a problem, but he's still a very strong athletic dude who can get push. He might need to bulk up just a little but I feel like it'd be just fine.

I personally love the idea of Campbell at RT, and think Lomu is much more of a natural LT. Campbell's physicality and aggressiveness is well suited to RT.

I liken this to the Chargers drafting Joe Alt at #5 overall in 2024 and moving him to RT, leaving the more agile Rashawn Slater at LT. When Slater hot hurt they moved Alt to LT, but their best combo was Slater at LT and Alt at RT. My guess is our best combo would be Lomu at LT and Campbell at RT.

The issues are that we don't know for sure how Campbell would adjust to RT, or how agreeable he would be to the move. And for right now we have Morgan Moses at RT. But I think finding the best combination is worth some tinkering.

Oh look, another thread on how much Will Campbell sucks.

It seems very wrong to expect our future to be Lumo at RT when he is a much better LT.

Of course, this is a 2027 issue unless Moses is our traditional veteran OL camp retiree.

I don't think Campbell will object to a move, I just don't think you do that until Lomu demonstrates that he's better than Campbell at LT.

State would trade Drake Maye for Spencer Rattler straight up tomorrow if he could. Remember folks, this is the same guy who claimed Rattler, who completely sucks, has a better arm than Mahomes. There very few people in this world with worse football judgement than Patsfan2, but State is one of them.
