Former DE Jones Says Patriots "Not known for really paying guys over there"

I'm sure Hightower is hating that $7.7m he is making this year.....

I think they will get Hightower signed, Collins I think will require a franchise tag.

They don't deserve what? Unsigned on the last year of their deal = signed

With this logic, in addition to Collins and High being unsigned, Chandler Jones is also playing for Arizona unsigned and without a contract. .........and is thats the case, they should all consider hiring new agents (if they can afford it playing for free and all).

Ya. Plus Hightower if you class him as a ILB, he is the 5th highest paid for '16. If you class him as an OLB (which includes Von Miller, Justin Houston, etc) he is the 11 highest paid this year

As a fan of a winning, everyone should envy the way we spend money. We have a strong middle class. Basically, BB should be running for president.

I love this team but if I for one second put myself in the player's shoes it is easy to see this is not the team to play for if you have dreams of being filthy rich. In your mind, you are the best and expect to break the bank. Even our big deals seem modest. For wins and super bowls alone, Brady's salary should be double everyones, even Peyton Manning, but because of his selflessness it is more in line with bums like Tannehill.

If I am going to risk tearing my acl and going ******ed from concussions, I want to to be paid. Ideal landing spots are obviously Oakland and the Redskins. Miami is also attractive(Suh) from a tax perspective off the top of my head.

Jones thanked Belichick for not tagging him to a crappy team, the crappy team comes next year when the Colts give him 100 million in free agency.

Possibly but the Pats will have the most cap space in '17 so I think both will get signed.

Chandler Jones - 25 games in December, January and February.... 6.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 0 interceptions...those are backup stats

I'm not a Krafty Bob fan, but hate to tell ya Chandler, you didn't deserve to "really get paid over there"...

I knew they were mediocre but that plain ole sucks.

I know he had some injuries in 2012 and 2014 and he did tweak something vs KC last year but clearly the guy fades once the XMas trees go up.

If you're trying to say that the Patriots are known for "paying guys", you're insane, because they certainly are not. If you're not trying to say that, you've got no real point.
I might say it differently. They are not known for paying everyone, they just pay the guys they like.
Breaking news: Former Patriots DE recants original statement:

"I apologize to the Patriots for statements that I made and now realize are inaccurate. What I should have said was that they're not known for overpaying for guys like me. I have disappeared in big moments and had my best games against the bottom teams in the NFL. I'm working hard out here in Arizona to be more like Rob Ninkovich, who rarely misses games and always makes the plays when needed most. I deserved to be traded, as I will still demand top dollar for marginal value compared to said contract. Thank you, Patriots, for the only Super Bowl ring I may ever get."
Wow. Jones really matured since he left. He sounds like a completely different guy now.

He was a ghost against Denver. While Collins and Hightower were terrorizing Manning, Jones was getting manhandled one on one. Out of the big four on defense (Hightower, Collins, Butler, Jones), he was the one I was most willing to let go.

I think most of us on this board believe that the Pats are one of the best, if not THE best, at managing the business side of the game. In today's game this is essential to sustaining long-term success and excellence. Scouting, drafting, contract negotiating, and real-time personnel evaluating are key strengths in Belichick's system in New England. IMO, no team is even close.

Jones's comments are typical. I wish him success, but will be interested to see how he does in AZ this year. My guess is "nothing special".

If he has a probowl year and put the AZ defense over the top.
Ill be happy for him but he wasnt that guy here.
Disappearing in big games and getting high before the playoffs not a great recipe to get paid here.
My guess is he has alot of skeletons in his closet much like his Brother.
Collins is much more mature and a freak who can be used all over the field you pay those guys.
Without Hightower lets say we had a Monty Beisal type jag Lynch is carrying him in the endzone and Butler never has a chance to become a boston sports hero.

there was zero point zero percent the pats were going to pay him anywhere close to market value. We all know this.

This is a non story.

What he said is true. It's also not exactly a revelation. It's a non-story.

No. What he said isn't true. We only have to look at guys like Matt Light, Mike Vrabel, Gronkowski, That other TE who is in jail, and slew of others who got paid very well. And most of them got extensions before their contract was up..

Yes, it's a non-story because it's a lie..

They're known for paying their players

Otherwise we wouldn't have the best team in the league year after year

Given how often players who get big money contracts fail to live up to the level of their pay checks, its a wonder they are given out by the owners so often. As for the Pats, they have been very successful with a strategy of playing their middle of the roster better than most teams, and minimizing the people they are paying top 5 money to.

According to Miguel's page, the Pats currently have 21 players making over $2MM this year. That's over 40% of a 53 man roster. Football is a numbers game, and having a salary cap that his heavily weighted at the top (like, say the Jets usually have) is a prescription for failure (as the Jets usually have shown).

NO ONE has managed the cap better than the New England Patriots this century, NO ONE. They ARE loathe to hand out top 5 type contracts, but they are more than willing to pay their "middle class" very well. A great example of this, at a time when they will be facing a huge number (relatively) of hard contract choices with home grown talent, is the same time they have $62MM in cap space.

PFK - You're statement is incorrect. Current the Pats have 21 players who count 2M or more against the cap. That doesn't mean they are getting $2M this year in salary. They only have 10 players who are making a salary of $2M or more. However, the caveat to that is that several players lowered their salary in lieu of a signing bonus (ala Brady). That being said, you are correct in your statement about how the Pats have managed the cap..

Not really fair to compare our spending to the rest of the league because we are consistently that much better than everyone else thus we have more guys who consider themselves really good players. Which means we have to let few really good players walk every so often.

What is also true is that when the Pats have let players walk or have traded them, very few of those players who received big money deals elsewhere actually lived up to their contracts.

Woody, Welker, Branch, Revis, Asante, Mankins, Milloy did not live up to their deals.

I think maybe Ty Law and Talib did. There might be a couple of others that have but I can't think of them.

Pats are risk adverse and play the percentages. Thats smart business which Jones does not understand, is unwilling to acknowledge or doesn't understand the team's philosophy of roster management.

As Rob said, the numbers are even more surprisingly bad than I think we all realized. F+ck that guy if he thinks he was deserving of market value. I went from really liking a player to instantly **** listing him in one evening. Hey AZ, enjoy the 12 games he'll play, the 11 sacks you'll get that'll be pretty much meaningless overall and the top dollar he'll still demand after giving you nothing in late November thru January.

It's just a gut feeling but I think Collins will want Miller money.
