Felger eats some crow regarding cassel

On the CBS telecast, Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf had some interesting commentary at the half regarding the Preston skirmish. Gumbel said they were in touch with NFL director of officials Mike Pereira, who said they weren't going to give the Bills a clock stoppage because of the fight. The ruling made sense. But the way the news was delivered, it sounded like Pereira was making that call from New York. If that's the case, did anyone realize he made in-game decisions like that?

this bit at the end...

its troubling...so its not just the refs who decide things, but this guy, Mike, can make decisions like that?

he can decide what happens on a challenge? if so, hes the one man Polian needs to have a hold of to be secure...

That's the Royal "we," from Prince Pereira, speaking on behalf of his liegemen and subjects. The Ref on the field made the call, Pereira just clarified referee thinking for Gumball & Dierdoof.

If he looks ar challenges it wouldnt be too surprising. When a goal in challenged in the NHL they are all reviewed in Toronto.

And in baseball when the home-run instant replay reviews are fully implemented they will all be done from New York. But that's because there's only need for review in one game out of all games every few days. The NFL is different.

Pereira has said on NFLN that he monitors all ongoing games from NYC for the purpose of providing information to announcers as situations arise. You can see this happening when an announcer is spouting off the wrong rule then after a few minutes changes his position, sometimes they mention the league informed them of this. But I have never heard Pereira say they have the ability to talk to officials on the field, and I don't believe the rules allow it. they had to change the rules recently to allow a second official to be present as the ref is under the hood.

Besides which, anyone paying attention could see the call at the end of the half was made within a few seconds of the clock running out, even if the Bills argued for minutes.

In the case of the Bills game I think the "we" is just referring to the brotherhood of officials, not him in New York specifically. Further, I don't know the rule but it would make sense if they went to New York for the harder challenges, better to get it "right"
