Well, the 2000 first rounder, in essence, drafted Bill Belichick. That one worked out well too.

I'm not surprised that one #1 was overlooked.

In 2000 we had no #1 draft pick. It was awarded to the NY Jets in exchange for the services of... Head Coach Bill Belichick.

So the correct roll call is Belichick, Seymour, Graham, Warren, Wilfork, Watson and Maroney. Other #1 picks include Jones, Scott, Sullivan and if we sign him, Seau.

He was the REAL 2000 #1 Draft Pick. So far of the picks we have two certain Hall Of Famers and all the others others are major contributors.

PS: Oops someone beat me to that observation. sorry!

This is nice, but you should hit on your first rounders.

Just cause other teams suck at talent evaluations, let's not lower our standards.
I realize you say that we shouldn't compare the Patriots to others, but it's a little unfair to Belioli to just shrug about the first rounders. When you look at first rounds historically there are a lot of busts and they are putting an impressive list together. From the second round on, though, their success rate is probably no better than average.

I've always thought it unfair to label every first rounder who doesn't make it a "bust." I think of "bust" as a situation where the player is not what the drafting team thinks they were. Some guys don't make it because of injuries. KiJana Carter, for example, just had injuries.

Now Katzenmoyer and everyone's favorite first rounder, Chris Canty ...

BF,

I 'd say that is not quite accurate. Certainly, their success rate is proportional to the # of choices that the Patriots have, and I have no quibble about that. But after the Bobby Grier years, the contrast is stark.

BB and SP have been careful to husband their own choices, and secure others, every year. Most draft days they have a "draft and a half", or a "double draft" of picks to make. That is due to conscious forbearance, and lack of yielding to "panic" as so many Chicken Littles here are prone to do. So if they are only average in pick success, they still end up with more talent from more picks.

Both have also recognized that there are other sources of players as well. They have secured good players from among vet FAs, UDFA rooks, PS graduates, and selected trades to fill obvious, residual unmet needs.

Both have said the want to be competitive every year, and obtained buy-in from the Owner. That does not allow for a stock-up for a single year's push. The Titans among others, did that, and have paid the price for the past few losing years.

After looking at the whole list I'd have to agree.

We didn't exactly nail it every year in round 2 and three has been a problem.

I really mean top 15, for example.

No excuse for trading up for a John Sullivan for example. I wonder how thorough that background check was?

Of course Red Auerbach was the best too and he was saying how Bias was a good character guy who didn't do drugs while they were pulling a cocaine rock the size of a baseball from his car.

The first round success is obvious.

The Second Round success i spretty good too.

Consider:

BB/SP have drafted Klemm, Light, Branch, Wilson, BJ, Hill and CJ in the second round.

Of that contingent Hill and CJ merit INCompletes, although Hill has been a disapointment, so far. Of all the others, only BJ and Klemm haven't become perpetual starters. Klemm's intrinsic talent is evident and he still is in the league, six years later although injury bad luck has dogged his career. When healthy, he has started and played.

BJ has flashed as a returner, but has not really developed as a WR. No one was a pure wipeout bust, unable to make the jump to the NFL by a lack of talent. Think of some of Grier's picks like Canty, Simmons or Floyd who wore the uniform but never played, at all, before being cut.

And with their 2nd round pick in the 2004 draft, the Patriots take Corey Dillon.

Jonathan Sullivan, Junior Seau (as of tomorrow), Chad Scott, and Tebucky Jones.

Tebucky was the 22nd overall pick by the Pats in 1998.

Scott was the 24th overall pick by the Steelers in 1997.

Seau was the 5th overall pick by the Chargers in 1990.

Sullivan was the 6th overall pick by the Saints in 2003.

I got Tebucky and Seau. I'm annoyed at missing Sullivan.

For those who like trivia- there are three other first round draft picks on the roster as of today. Can you name them?

Seau, Sullivan, and ??? is it Warfield? (Now I'll scroll down and look....)

Now that Junior has offically signed we have 4 #1's so Pats1 is now correct.
