Robinson has played lots of reps when he was elevated in the past couple of weeks. Apparently, Vrabel liked him enough to bring him up twice and play him over Minor who also has been elevated by only played for a couple of reps,

We have an open roster spot. Why wouldn't we sign Robinson to the 53 until we need the spot? We haven't and the jets picked him up. It makes sense to sign someone and then cut him if we find someone better, but leaving an open roster spot seems wrong when we have the apparent need to elevate a STer and give him lots of reps.

It's kind of weird. Teams usually want to maximize roster spots. They could elevate him and get a look at another practice squadder in his place.

I'm sure they have reasons though. It is cheaper to do this, though I'd hope that's not a serious consideration. I also believe if they sign him and cut him later he'll go through waivers and any team can claim him. Someone can sign him off the practice squad now, but that's negotiated rather than assigned like a waiver claim. So maybe they know if they add him to the 53 they'll cut him in 1-2 weeks and don't want to risk some team claiming him where they don't get a chance to match?

Not worrying about a guy bouncing from the PS. Maybe they had seen enough.

The Browns poached a player from the NE practice squad too.

Its a sign of no respect if you ask me. Teams would never do that to BB because they feared him.

Uhh no, sorry.

Agreed.
BB thought and thinks he's above everyone else.
I think it was Mills the TE we drafted and had on the PS that Minny claimed and BB threw a hissy fit over it.
I may have the name wrong, but it was definitely a TE.

Um, yeah.

2 players in 1 week is unheard of for NE. Never occurred in the BB era, because 5hit would hit the fan. There was always an unspoken agreement that practice squad players were off limits. But, you can pretend that Vrabel is some sort of GAWD, so get the champagne ready.

The Jets and Browns took a dump in Bob Krafts private rest room and did not flush.

It's a sign of respect for the roster.

Like the respect when we regularly would have the most players in the league claimed at cut down day who were headed for the practice squad, despite with the fear of BB.

I know it happened this week and I believe that it never occurred when BB was here.

I am not buying that a GM is like I think this guy would help our team but that is Bill over there and I am scared. Completely believable

I don't think Vrabes is a GAWD, but I do think you are pretty delusional.

It wasn't even the same world.

Practice squads were almost half the size. Eligibility requirements were different. And you couldn't easily bring a guy back and forth to the game day roster so other teams could see him.

It's not a serious statement.

Huh? Malik Cunningham and Will Grier come to mind. Weren’t they poached by other teams?

Not sure about that but it was a different era - I doubt teams felt he'd go easy on him

But basically every team is developing their ongoing roster, practice squad and shadow roster as we speak

Heck we had Jerry Rice's son in for a looksee - that has nothing to do with respect for Kyle Shanahan

In general, I have ZERO worry about someone being poached. However, when a player is getting 1/2 the ST reps for a couple of weeks (65% on Sunday) and the other elevated player got 4 reps, perhaps we should keep the one we want playing until we find a replacement.

We'll see. Perhaps Minor's 4 reps showed them enough to have him play half the ST reps as Robinson did for the last couple of weeks.

I'm all for using the elevation process to find players. It just seems that we found on for now with no other PS player showing anything. It seemed right to fill the empty roster spot. BTW, isn't the cost of an elevated player and a roster player the same?

We might be keeping that open roster slot so we can sign or claim a player cut or released by another team. Like the starting safety Houston just released. With an open roster slot we would not have to make room for a new acquisition. If we promoted a PS player and then had to waive or release them they’d be more exposed to other teams grabbing them up. Like, another team could sign them to their PS instead of us re-signing them to ours. Might not be a big deal but seems like another thing to consider.

ZWe do not need to have an open roster spot in order to claim someone or sig someone. All that is required is that we waive someone or put someone on IR by EOB on the day of the claim.

That had a lot more to do with the PS rules prior to 2020, which allowed teams to overpay for PS players they really wanted to keep (e.g., they paid Billy Yates as if he were on the 53-man roster), and to increase their salary in mid-season if need be. Squads were also smaller (8-10 players), so it was easier to afford.

Now, not only are PS salaries limited by the CBA to prevent such maneuvers, but even the "protection" system guarantees every player has a chance to sign elsewhere each week.

Yes, exactly why I was saying that the discussion in this thread about putting a player from the PS onto the roster to eliminate their exposure to being poached could be moot or shortlived if we made a waiver claim or FA signing and had to free a roster slot. They’d be cut or waived and even more exposed to being poached than if they were just left on the PS. Assumes adding another player, and that the PS elevation would be the one let go, but it could be a consideration.
