targeted 14 times this season he's given up 13 catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

he's going to have to step up his game once we face good quarterbacks in January

He was in on one tackle today. Seems like they were trying to work in McClellin [4] and Van Noy [3]

Im not worried about him. He had some huge games and will again.
At the moment they are trying a lot of new things with the new guys.
When it settles he'll be ok. And yes, used mostly vs run.
He has speed to cover but needs much more experience.

He was decisive again at the goal line D. He will make plays soon enough.

Good observation. Whether we will be better on D remains to be seen, however, the coaches appear to still be working out their prime personnel/packages. That it is almost thanksgiving and this is still going on is worrisome.
IMHO, which doesn't mean much , the coaches right now must be tentative about what they are capable of on D. Adjustments are coming soooo after the fact I'm left with no other answer. BB and staff's chess match appears to be being played online with a 56k dial up connection.

I noticed him get torched 2-3 plays in a row. Then he was watching from the sideline.

He seems a little slow to me. I think he's a good run stuffer, but I'm not sure if I want him covering any running backs. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if there is anyone on our roster now who can handle that job. I think we'll see teams trying to take advantage in weeks to come. Not sure what the solution is but am pretty sure it's not McClellin or Roberts.

There was one play where Kapernick made him look silly. Other than that I didn't notice him much.

The reshuffling of the D started with the bye week. This is basically the 2nd preseason game. Should be set by Ravens or Broncos game at the latest. I believe this can be a solid unit and it will be. And I hope Sheard is an important part of it.

He is definitely two steps behind on the play calls. His reactions are that of a rookie to be fair. He looks lost in coverage.

I guess you forgot a little about those CLE and CIN games .. He was good at everything there but the LB position was set at that time with High-Collins or High-Ninko along his side. He's a rookie and he needs more settled environment. BB/MP forced him into Collins' shoes vs SEA a bit, now they pulled him back a bit. Don't worry .. he knows how to respond.

If you knew at the beginning of the preseason that Collins and Hightower would be healthy for the most part, you would never would have guessed who we have vying for playing going forward.

Wish Mingo could get his head around coverage, he seems to have some very good physical attributes.

He made some plays and also missed some, overall looked good for what they are asking from him. Certainly not a game changer in this one but he did his job.

They looked much better tonight than I thought they would. I had nightmare scenarios of Kaepernick looking like Joe Cool throwing into that secondary. That didn't happen, defense had some nice pressure to start the game and mixed it up all the way through.

Nice to stick it to Chip Kelly after that horrible Eagles loss last time. Good win on the road in a monsoon for most of it. I'll take that six ways to Sunday.

From the game tape, other team's figured out how to block him out in the run game and exploit his weaknes in the passing game.

why dont they play mingo more in coverage ? doesnt grasp the playbook yet?

I'm little worried the shuffling is still peaking. With that said I agree with you this can be a solid unit and share a majority of your optimistic outlook.
As far as timing, I'll take largely healthy and hitting their stride even if doesn't come until January. When I look at the schedule we're good enough to be shuffling/figuring out the optimal roadmap while still winning/eking out more than half the remaining games provided the OL plays satisfactory (OTOH if teams can rush 4 but still pressure Brady rapidly then we'll have a more pressing need for the D to gel sooner).
