Edelman and Amendola: we should cut ties with one of them

I think it should be Amendola, but I understand $$$ would play a huge factor here, especially since Edelman is now a FA and Amendola's under a 5 year contract. How tied up are we moneywise to Amendola?? Anyone think he's a trade option? I would much rather keep around Edelman than Amendola, keeping both of them kinda restricts our offense. We need more big play explosiveness, just like we were saying last year.... and every year it seems. :bricks:

Unfortunately it is not that easy due to the salary cap implication of Amendola and the fact that we hold no rights to Edelman so he can do as he pleases. I am sure he will receive offers from teams like the Texans with O’Brien there now, heck the Broncos could choose to cut Welker and clear his $6 million in cap space and take a run at him.

I really think getting rid of someone, unless they're an attitude problem, is the wrong way to go about it.

We need to improve our offensive options and that will likely make talented, but poor fit now/injured whatever players valuable.

A healthy Dobson, Gronk and another TE/WR or more and those guys will be back in their role being played by LBs or something.

It might be we can't afford them business wise, but it's so hard to find talented players that fit and so easy to just cut people.

I have no problem with the current WR group. Need to bring back Edelman though because letting him go would be hitting the reset button on Brady's tendencies again.

Boyce, Dobson, and thompkins showed well, and hopefully they can avoid injuries as 2nd year guys.

Those 5 plus an upgrade at TE behind gronk and the offense will be fine.

Boyce was a more productive player than Britt was this season. Let that sink in. Britt is in contention for the title of worst WR in the NFL this season. One source I found has him at 4 drops on 15 catchable balls, another has him with 7 drops on 18. Either way, that's simply pathetic. He can't get open either, thanks to that knee injury a few seasons ago. At this point, he's a guy who can't get open, can't catch, and has an inflated sense of self worth as a player. You list him as one of the top 3 receivers, which is ridiculous. He's not a better player than any of those "backups."

Because he's cheap!

For 2014, yes, but not beyond.

As I've pointed out before, if all their other WRs are on rookie contracts, they can afford $5M for both Edelman and Amendola for another year or two.

Yes if Amendola fails to perform next year he's a cap casualty in 2015. And he'll never see the presently projected 2016 money either way.

Personally, I'd like to see a top TE drafted, and one of these two signed: Kenny Britt or Hakeem Nicks.

I'd take Britt over Nicks.

I wouldn't take Britt over STEVIE Nicks.

Okay truthfully, I just wanted to say that. I don't know how to make that call since both were unimpressive this year.

Can you imagine the massive amount of butthurt around here if the Broncos cut Welker and stole Edelman from us?

that is just mean...............

That's because we know the one simple fact that you guys clearly cannot grasp, his contract is not going to allow them to release him this offseason. they aren't going to take an almost 3 million dollar cap hit to release Amendola when receiver is one of their biggest needs. It is not fanatasy football and there actually cap consequences for releasing players.

You want to keep playing in the land of make believe then go right ahead, you can start some threads about trading Mallett for Calvin Johnson while you are at it.

The 5 year contract will look more and more horrible over time. Just a terrible decision to sign Amendola and also sign him that long. The cap hit is too high, they can't cut him for a few years.

This team is in a real jam because Amendola eats up money to sign Edelman, plus they still need to sign an outside WR, and shore up the O-line and TE spots.

For the millionth time: Amendola isn't going anywhere. He costs more to cut than to keep.

Point well taken but the Pats deserve criticism for tying up guaranteed money with a guy who while talented has proven to be unreliable, this season did nothing to dispel that fact.

Please correct me if I am wrong as admittedly do not know for sure but weren't that Pats under the cap this year? Kraft is nowhere near Jeremy Jacobs but he seemed to take that approach this year. IIRC they made an offer to Emmanuel Sanders which Pitt found surprisingly easy to match. Sanders is no Larry Fitzgerald by any stretch of the imagination but he IMO he would've had a bigger impact in the offense than Dobson and Thompkins.

Stevie Nicks was unimpressive this year?

Ok, pretty much everyone knows my position on the Welker-Amendola situation, so you know this isn't coming from the pro-Bill side of this particular equation:

The one edge Amendola had over Welker is that he's a bit more flexible with regards to outside play. Welker can do it, but he's clearly much less comfortable on the outside, while it's not an issue for Amendola. The significance of that is that there's a greater interchangeability with Amendola/Edelman than there was with Welker/Edelman.

Amendola's not going anywhere in 2014, because his contract prevents that from happening unless the Patriots are willing to take a $6.8m cap hit in order to avoid paying Amendola $4.7m. Since the cap is not expected to rise much, yet again (Brilliant CBA work, NFLPA.... Dumbasses), that would be a significant impact on the Patriots cap space.

That being the case, keeping Edelman around allows both for a theoretical 2 player punch and built in redundancy for when one of them ends up on the shelf again. As long as Edelman's not asking for an unreasonable deal, it makes sense for the Patriots to bring him back and have both on the team.

Amendola's cap situation becomes palatable as far as cutting for cap space beginning with the 2015 season. If his body has him on the shelf again next year the Patriots can cut him loose before that 2015 season and at least gain $2m in cap space.

Dobson and Thompkins had 69 receptions for 986 yards, essentially what Lloyd had in 2012.
Maybe Sanders would have done better, maybe not. In any case, these players did well and have a solid upside.

We still have an opportunity to pursue Sanders or some other WR if we wish them instead of Edelman.

I would much rather see Edelman back than Sanders, but if he goes that is a reasonable option. I want WR and TE to be priorities in the offseason, and although i realize that the raft is a crapshoot and a long way offff i would love to see them pick up one of each in the first 2 rounds, and a number of different pairs would be fine with me, e.g....Amaro/ Mathews, Lee/Niklas etc.... Some might require a deal withhouston for their 2nd and some may require a move up in the 2nd, and some may just be there when they pick, regardless i think they have to make sure they build on what they have and not go backwards. I expect Dobson to pan out and hope either Boyce or Thompkins do, but I wouldn't rest my expectations on them and believe more talent is needed to make sure they are set at receiver next season

Quite honestly i dont think we have a shot at keeping Julian. This is the only shot he got at making money and there will be a GM out there that will overpay. Pats will not go there and then go after Emmanuel Sanders. Hope am wrong but thats the reality of free agency.

As far as Amendola have a funny feeling that the same people that talked crap about Edelman last few years and love him this year will be doing the same with Amendola. Just a hunch.

Can't keep playing musical chairs with WRs when brady probably only has 1 more chance at a deep run. Edelman has to stay

Dobson and Thompkins as rookies had 69 receptions for 986 yards, essentially what Lloyd had in 2012.

Correction made.

Edelmendola stays.

And hopefully so do Dobson and Thompkins. We need to have consistency at receiver, and I thought they did well for rookies in a Brady type offense where the devil is in the details.

Frankly the loss of Gronk is such a huge game changer. He usually commands a double-team, freeing up one or more of the other smaller receivers.
