Drop-Off to the RB

especially this season it seems to me that our defense has been able to make the offense check down in the passing game quite a bit of time...and yet even these dumpoffs have had a little bit success

my question then is why dont we use the dumpoff?

BJGE is good in open space, Woody is great, Ridley I imagine is decent at least, and Faulk is VERY good...so can we please incorporate this in the offense? it would help Brady, and when everyone is covered he would not have to throw it in some real tight space he can throw for 2 yards to the RB and make him miss some tackles?

Welker, Gronk and (to a lesser degree) Hernandez all work the short-intermediate middle zones where a dump-off would take place. The Pats are still primarily a between the tackles rushing team. Add that up and opposing defenses are having team meetings between the numbers. There just isn't space most of the time.

In the Cowboys game, the Pats did run a formation where 4-across all ran deep...taking everyone with them. On the last drive that resulted in a Woodhead dump-off and a huge 13 yard gain. That play changed their mindset from a tying FG to a winning TD.

So I don't see the RB dump-off as being a huge part of the offense. But it is that infrequency that allows them to gameplan a "clear-out" for the RB when needed. Now the RB screen? That is another question. I have no idea why that has disappeared. My hope is that it reappears when the Pats really need it and it blindsides the opponent.

you are correct about that play in the boys game...

but the dump offs dont have to be in front of the O line, they can be to the side, and with us already making full use of the middle of the field, i was thinking more about dumpoffs to the sidelines

Actually I was thinking about this as it pertains to the Ryan brothers defenses. IIRC last January the RB was open for dump offs several times for Brady before he tried somewhere else or time ran out. I say it open as well vs the Jets, and as we saw in the last drive against Dallas, Woody was WIDE open twice underneath. I think the RB out of the backfield, especially on a delay is an easy throw for Brady and generally wide open both from under C and in shot gun

And I think as BB and Brady parse out how the Ryans defend TB, it will become more apparent that this sis something that Tommie can go to successively.... consistently. Not only will it keep drives a live, it is tremendously frustration for the D to defend down field so well, and then see a dinky little pass corrupt so u easily what you had accomplished all over the rest of the field.

Its late or I'd explain to you the difference between a delay out of the backfield and a screen pass. NOT the same thing.

This works when the defense plays a soft zone, 4-5 receivers run deep routes taking 6-7 defenders, the protection is awesome, and the RB beats the LB for lots of YAC.

I don't think it's necessarily easy. Only works well when you play against the right defense.

The Chargers used to do this all the time. Send Floyd, Gates, Jackson, _______, on 20 yard in's and end-zone go's, LT/Sproles/Turner would jam a rusher and get open 2 yards in front of the LOS.

I certainly agree. I have always thought that utilizing this option against the NYJ was a decent play, especially against a more aggressive defense who will rush the QB and possibly overrun the play etc.

Then again, what the hell do I know? I am sure there are reasons why it hasn't been used too much.

Being a huge fan of the "running game via the short pass" I will always want this option to be used more though.

The option is always there. You can always see it whenever BJGE or Woodhead flare out of the shotgun.

Brady, for some reason, seems to not like it. He often ignores an open BJGE or Woodhead in favor of going downfield for a big gain.

Funny that you should bring it up before the Steelers game. We hurt them with this option a few times last year- BJGE had 4 rec's for 36 yards and Woodhead had 2 for 22.

This has been going on for Brady's entire career. The non-3rd down running backs don't get many passes. I'd love to know whether that's on Brady or the OC/HC.

Ever since I saw Corey Dillon freeze an LB with a double move, I've thought this probably wasn't a question of RB receiving talent.
