Drake Maye is the Most Valuable Player in the NFL

The difference between an offense coached by Josh McDaniels with Bricillo as O-line coach and an offense/O-line coached by Belichick, Patricia and Judge is as clear a reason as I could imagine.
Through 11 games the Patricia offense was better than O'Brien or AVP's offense. Stat.

You should be comparing the Patricia offense to the McDaniels offense. '23 was why BB was rightly let go and '24 is why AVP probably should be.

I am not defending, I am noting that Patricia was awful but AVP is worse. Most posters don't get it. I agree AVP should go for sure.

Having said that, look at BB's 2023 draft and Wolf's 2024 draft, minus Maye. Look at Wolf's 2024 FA signings. As bad as BB was as a GM, Wolf is worse as GM. Other than Maye, it is possible that Wolf's whole draft and FA signings will not be on the team in 2026. Complete and total disaster.

The whole management and coaching staff should be fired. Wolf, Groh, Mayo, AVP, Covington, etc. Do a proper search and hire professionals. With Maye, our high draft picks, and a boatload of FA cap space, this franchise could turn around quickly with professional management and coaching.

I agree with the comparison of the two drafts, and that free agency this year was an embarrassment. I made that very point just recently (although BB's 22 draft was a disaster).

Someone -- I forget who -- said that Wolf should be empowered to replace Mayo. Just the opposite of my view. (It's true that the Pats have a boatload of cap space, by the way, but so do many other teams, so it's very unlikely that they can pick up their LT and WR1 because other teams are forced into a fire sale.)

I'm very cautious because I can't see behind the scenes and there's a lot of blame to go round, but my choice would be to keep Mayo and replace Wolf, AVP and Covington.

The argument in favour of Mayo is that the players want to play for him. He'll never be BB, but that doesn't matter. BB thought he could do everything. It was fine when he left the offense to Charlie or McDaniels who had enough personality to do it their way. When he started thinking he could coach offense too (with Judge and Patricia as sock-puppets) it didn't go so well. No one thinks that Mike Tomlin is the mad genius behind the Steelers, but their Front Office and co-ordinators get on with the job and it goes pretty well.

I like the policy of locking up players long term and not devoting scarce roster spaces to special teamers who, by the end of the season, would be forced onto the field as part of the starting defense (Pierre Woods. Eric Alexander, James Ihedigbo, Sergio Brown etc., etc.) And I think that Mayo is likely to bring problem players back into the fold better than BB managed in his later years. (I'm really encouraged at the way that Barmore took ownership and apologized for his childish, entitled behaviour.)

I like AVP to listen to him and I'm sure he's a patient teacher, but the fact that the best bits of the offense come in the first two drives (when everything is scripted and rehearsed) tells me that he's not an effective game-planner and game-manager. He's also been given a free hand to bring in his own people (Stevens for the OL, McCartney as the QB coach, Brissett as the crash-test dummy). I'm somewhat impressed with Stevens (again, to listen to him -- he sounds as though he knows what he's doing) but starting Onwenu at tackle and then changing your mind after a couple of drives (against the Titans) is not a good look.

The games against the JETE (in New York), against the Jags and then against the Rams were enough to persuade me that Covington is a problem. I'm no analyst but you could see that they had no answers (to Rodgers leaving the pocket, to the Jags running game, to Pacua/Kupp) at the beginning of the game and none at the end. That's on the co-ordinator.

Amazing post. Very thoughtful.

We need an Xs and Os coach on offense and defense. The Tomlin analogy is good, but that model is old and rare in the NFL. Most of the great coaches still call plays or were Xs and Os guys previously. I like Mayo too, but the Sideline CEO coaching role is not part of a winning structure. Better to get a Ben Johnson type and start from scratch.

Wolf and Groh should go, absolutely no doubt about that.

Still applies, nothing changed after today

For you. I fundamentally disagree with the premise of the thread. I don't think he's as good as you think he is -- just our opinions, I realize -- because I dislike how turnover prone he's been. I know we don't have a good team around him, but I highly doubt he's ever winning a championship. I've consistently said I would have preferred a top WR or LT, and I don't see anything that changes my mind on that. I'm surprised that people like his style. He might put up bigger numbers with a better supporting class, but he's a risky football player, for all his tantalizing talent. I don't think that ever leads to sustained success in the NFL. We'll see.

I seem to remember a Fan base in Buffalo split over Josh Allen after his first couple of seasons? There were a lot of people on this board that preferred or at least considered Harrison or Alt over Maye. So far I would completely agree Maye was 100% the right pick. Clear as day. If you can’t see the talent of a franchise QB shine through the cloud of bad coaching and personal then I don’t know what to tell you. Free agents and coaches aren’t ever going to choose here for a Wr or Lt. They will always consider the Qb situation first so I’m glad we at least got that.

Josh Allen was looking like a bust in Buffalo until he got Diggs and the division was for the taking when Brady and other players left the Pats.

I do think we need to pump the brakes on Maye. He has some talent, but I think he's overrated by many right now. He needs a better HC with a staff and front office. He may end up a bust if the team keeps trending in the direction it has.

70% percentile in negative plays at NC, best of any of the first round QB's. He's proven he can limit negative plays
Trying to do too much with a bad team and learning what he can get away with in the NFL vs college. Not concerned.
Brady averaged close to a fumble and a pick per game his first 3 years. Seemed to work out fine.

The traits that make superstar QB's are rare, Maye had all those traits thus 95% chance of being a superstar. Have not seen anything that suggests otherwise so far.

Yeah, two more turnovers and a heroball pick in the 4th for the 3rd straight game.

The eye test says one thing, but the results say something else.

Again, not worried about Maye at all, just add a bit of talent around him

What if Maye struggles in year 2?
All depends who is wide receivers are. He is exempt from criticism if his best wide receivers are Soda Pop Douglas or Kendrick Mourn

Name me one QB in the nfl who could win with our current Wr corps?

Some talent? Dude is a stud and has shown zero bust worthy games. Hell most figured he'd be throwing 3 picks a game for the entire season.

He is a really, really good QB surrounded by crap for the most part.

Nobody, but people don't like to admit it. Brady went on to win a SB and was an MVP runner up the two years after the WR corps here had people calling him washed.

That WR corps was much better than what we have now.

Today’s OL play is the type that can ruin a qb and what the biggest fear was when id think of him playing. Not that they were good before today, but in this one drake literally had no shot. Whether it was the pressure or having him in 1st and 15-20 seemingly half the time. Shades of the first jets game. Add in the defense putting us down 21-0 in 4 possessions. I honestly give drake credit that he didn’t have 5 turnovers today or look like caleb and bo did in their bad games.
