Drake Maye has arrived . . .

"Another week, another Drake Maye tweet" [BTW, JJ McCarthy's not here b/c he doesn't have enough snaps; he's actually at around -20.]

JT O'Sullivan throws some shade on Drake Maye's Titans performance in his new QB School vlog.

Says Drake has some open receivers but chooses to run after the first read in some situations. Seems valid.

Watched the whole thing. Thanks for that. I have no issues with his decision making there even with guys who looked like they were open, but I can justify not throwing to every single one except the Hollins go route in the 1st example, but even in that case, he took the easy yards and didn't risk it. An example is the goal line non throw to Henry who supposedly was "open" after the break except for the LB 50 who was reading his eyes right in front of him the whole time.

The only major issue I have is not f'ing sliding or taken unnecessary damage like he's Big Ben or Allen. As he stated, that stuff adds up. We also have to remember. After last year's OL, this is a dude with deep seated trauma and an inherently fast clock.

The hype is premature, but, man it's such an improvement over the previous few years.

Mac was cringe worthy bad. He always found a way to not get it in the end zone.
Every once in a while he would make an accurate throw on time...maybe once a drive, maybe less. Just enough to give you false hope. The O-line surely contributed. It seemed every drive stalled out with off sides, false start, pick, fumble. What a **** show!! I cringed watching each game knowing how embarrassing sloppy they were going to be. I wondered why I was paying for NFL+. Most games weren't worth re-watching.

Now there's just a different vibe. I look forward to Sundays again. Maye's not afraid of winning. You expect them to move it down the field...to win the game.

Th New Englander in me knows Maye will put up a stinker. They will lay an egg.
Who cares.
Remember, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
They are so far ahead of schedule. The O-line will improve. The defense will improve. Maye will improve.

Totally agree with cherry picking of stats. Like if I played in the NFL and threw a touch down I would then hold the record as the only guy who is right handed but wipes his ass with his left.
You're ****ing weird dude. Just playing, when I seperated my right shoulder I had to learn to do it with my left. Its literally a great skill to have.

I didnt realize or think about it until being an adult and one day I was like why am I using my left hand. I dont get it, I do everything right handed but that. I blame my mom for incorrect training

I think we have official ran the train off the tracks!

As much as the hype may be a little premature (although I absolutely love watching him play) the talk of him missing open men is also a little overstated imo.

I watched lots of games where the greatest of all time missed wide open receivers! Sometimes it was Brady seeing ghosts, sometimes it was not going through the progressions, sometimes it was because he didn’t trust the receiver or have that rapport. That was the GOAT QB….the best to ever do it. Every single QB that’s ever played can have that levelled to them to varying degrees! For a QB in his second year with a brand new supporting cast at coach and player level I have zero concerns (other than injury!) about his decision making!

That said please start sliding

After the beating he took last year you blame him for popping smoke when **** starts to go sideways? Also from Josh's mouth in preseason they want him to take the first option that nets positive yardage and not be greedy. So yeah there are plays that someone else is open for a bigger gain but I dont think thats how he is being coached. I agree with time he will see more of the field, the game slows down, more confidence in the people around him. But for now the kid plays lights out and I dont see nothing to complain about.
I saw Josh Dobbs taking game snaps at QB against the Titans.

To me that’s something to complain about. YMMV.

He's already got that here, since the Raiders are paying him $10M/year through 2027, minus whatever we pay him.

To me it all comes down to ego. If his ego insists on him being a HC, then he might go. If it doesn't, I think he'll stay here, watch his children and his bank balance grow and be happy as one of the best OCs in the NFL with one of the best QBs in the NFL. Seems like a pretty satisfying life for him, and for his family.

Also I would add that being HC didn't turn out well for him twice (three times if we count that Colts thing) and that being HC comes with a lot more pressure. He perhaps might not feel confident that he'll be very good at it if given a third chance, since that's what the data suggests. However, the ego doesn't look much at data...
He is more or less in total control of the Offense
Maye is 23 yrs old and easy to work with
Vrabel seems like a fair guy to work with

When I had bicep surgery on my right arm
I became ambidicktrous
That my friend is a skill

As per warner , he left a lot of easy short throws he didnt take

Seeing the field and making those throws comes with experience. But you would rather see him miss throws, go 20/33 instead of 29/33 for instance, vs seeing him in a blue tent and a backup QB taking snaps.

It's up to the QB coach and McDaniels to get him away from sliding too much.

The problem is more that he isn't sliding enough.

Given that choice I certainly would prefer seeing missed throws rather than a missing QB.

One thing I think is noteworthy about JT’s analysis is how often he points out multiple open receivers. He shows completions where there was another open receiver, sometimes for a better play result. He shows plays the he calls “one and run” where if the first read isn’t there Drake runs even though there is another receiver open, and on some of those runs he points out there were more than one open receiver.

Reason I mention this is that it makes me think those who want us to trade for a WR upgrade (I’m looking at you PF2, and your twin 2 too) should be prepared for the possibility that if we did make such a trade we might not see the desired results until we get better QB play instead of Drake’s present one and run habit.

Another thing about this is that it helps inflate Drake’s eye popping completion percentages if he cuts and runs any time there’s any doubt in his mind about the certainty of a completion. It’s going to reduce turnover worthy throws and hospital balls, but those risks are reduced at the risk that he will have his head slammed against the ground and miss some time. He narrowly dodged a bullet when he only missed a handful of plays against the Titans. Next time he may not be so lucky. Staying in the pocket and not being so quick to use his legs would be an improvement in his game, as JT clearly explains.
Just a guess, I obviously have no idea what they are teaching Maye, but it seems to me one of the main issues in the week 1 loss was Maye wasn't confident in what he was seeing. Throws were late, and he looked slow when he did run. People were talking about having to draft the next guy. Go to the film this week, he may not make the correct decision every time but he is much better at I'm doing XYZ and putting 100% into that. That says to me, the coaches are telling him some version of I'll take a quick decisive 5 yards over waiting for the 30 yard play to open up. If the decisive thing to do is run I'm ok with that for now as he and the rest of the offense continue to gel. Maye is only 23 and playing impressive winning football. I'll take it assuming he continues to put in the work and where he could be in 2-3 years when he knows when to let it rip versus take off running. It will come in time and reps.

I think the whole running too soon thing is accurate and overblown. Titans played a number of man coverages which opens up the field for scrambles. He scrambled 8 times, a season high. Against Buffalo was only 2. It's not like he's been doing this all year at that high a level.

He has 44 rushing attempts this year, Mahomes has 42, Allen has 46 with 1 less game. He's running about the same as similar QB's and I bet there are guys that come open when the others scramble as well.

I think the issue is not the decision to run, it's the trying for extra yards at times when he should slide. However, he has 16 first downs on runs, so sometimes sliding is not an option.

Some of the video noting open guys is accurate but at least half were overblown. The play he got hurt on, he stepped up in pocket, the Defender was 5 yards from him and nobody between him and Maye. If he stops, looks up and no receiver is open, he is sacked. If he could have beaten the 1 guy to the sideline he had a 20-yard gain. He can't assume someone's going to be open and take a 50% chance at a sack when he sees all this open field around 1 defender. Once the defender locked on, he should have slid down, taken the 2 yards instead of trying to stiff arm for 2-3 extra yards.

That being said there were a few plays he should have had a little more patience.
Something I think he'll get better at the more experience he gets.
Jayden Daniels runs at almost twice the clip of these QB's but since he's not a great passer he has to.
Maye is a great passer, so he needs to improve on protecting himself and taking less yards and, once in a while, throwing it away before taking on a defender. Experience should help with that.
Just hope he learns it before he gets knocked out of another game.

If Josh is not showing him this, someone needs to show Drake this. If he is going to run, he should run and get down quicker. He needs some hard truths told to
Him. The team needs him and he can’t go
The route of Daniels.
