Hence my unrealistic expectations comment. These guys... Comparing him to Brady.
It’s like the expectation for people is for Drake Maye to be a fusion of Tom Brady and Josh Allen.

I am sure Drake is very smart but he is not a cerebral QB. He is a playmaker. His style isn’t to read a defense and pick them apart.

He WILL miss read. What you hope is that when he does he is still able to make a play the majority of the time.

I wouldn’t expect him to put up top 5 or even top 10 #s until we do more at the wr position. We have improved there but even then its still an average set at best. Looking at other top qbs around the league drake has nowhere near the talent to throw to that these guys had while they made their way up, unless diggs somehow channels his 2020 self. If drake does it with this cast might as well start getting his gold jacket fitted lol
He was 17 in QBR last year. My hope is that he will be in the top 15 this year.

I'm expecting him to be a caretaker 1st part of the year and making a bonehead play here and there and better in Nov/Dec.
Just this. I'm expecting McD to handle him much as Charlie Weiss handled Brady in his first year starting. No hero ball, retain possession, let your teammates do what they do.

If he ends up being better than Drew Bledsoe, that would make him the second best QB in franchise history. 100% more than acceptable. The odds of the Pats hitting on two HoF QBs this close together is so low. I really think fans need to pump the brakes on expectation of him. I think he's got the best coach to help him in JMcD, but he doesn't have a real stud WR yet, and a sus line. Long way from being a top 10 QB. Right now, it's about getting him to learn the craft and not lose the game. Once he gets "some pelts", then maybe we can raise expectations.

We've got awful high, perhaps unrealistic, expectations for a soon to be 23 yr old kid in his second year in the NFL.
I'm not lowering them. I don't believe it's unrealistic. He's got it in him.

LFG.

Absolutely. Mentioned before that I think his rookie year did considerable damage to his development- just absurdly sub-standard coaching, WR and OL groups. Most concerned about his decision making and ball security. He has the right coaches now to reach his potential, but I'm still extremely suspicious of Wolf/Groh/etc and their ability to draft. We'll see.

Thats a fair goal. In the best case scenario where he excels under jmd he could possibly flirt with a top 10 rank but i think he’ll need better weapons for that. Mac jones had a decent year with jmd so my expectation would be drake topping that by a little.

Agreed. Folks need to stop expecting him to follow in Tom Brady's footsteps. If he approximates a Drew Bledsoe-level of expertise, I'm happy. He's got support from the running game and defense, becoming an efficient game manager this season should suffice.

Maye is being compared to Brady? Yikes. Poor kid doesn't have a chance....
I think if you compare him to 2002 Brady, you might be ok. 28 TDs, 14 picks, 9-7 record. At that point, Brady was 25 yrs old and had already won his first ring. Maye's not yet 23 and hasn't won anything, but ok sure. If we are going to compare him to Tom Brady with 5-6 rings who knew the answers to the test, then it's unfair.

I really think we need to give the kid a break. There's probably more than one 3 INT game coming up.

Obviously still a long way to go and a lot to prove but I don't know what people are watching if they don't see someone who has improved over last year. He's extremely athletic and has a great arm my excitement far outweighs my concern.

Who also had only 2 years of college with crappy ol and crappy coaches plus no football his Sr. year of HS cuz of the pandemic.
Give me a freakin' break.
Some posters here are idiots.
Taking their cue from some idiot Boston media.

It is unrealistic to expect him to be a top 5 QB in year 2. There's a better chance than not that he will never get to that level at all.

But I'd like to see some improvement this season in the passing game. The excuses from last year don't apply anymore. If there isn't any improvement and he's still fumbling and leaving himself prone to injury then I'll start to get concerned.
No its not it will show if he has "It". Maye can make all the throws: we shouldn't expect anything less.

Well, a lot of you guys weren’t concerned about OT the past couple of years when I was banging my pans together warning about undersized Calvin Anderson and moving Chuks Okorafor to the left side.

So, yes, I am concerned about Maye. His accuracy was an issue coming out of college. His last college game against NC State he played poorly. Brady’s last game he single handily dragged his Wolverines over the finish line against the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

So there’s that.
Excuse me, you are seriously gonna compare Maye in his 2nd year for a crappy UNC team, with one of the worst OLs in college football, with one of the worst groups of wrs in college football and horrific coaching with Tom Brady playing for a powerhouse Michigan team?
You're just so full of ****. I keep waiting for you to make even one knowledgeable post and it hasn't happened in all these years.

Not concerned because i Believe he has another year of learning to do But, all the other qbs taken in first round of his draft year are better than him now

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Penix, JJ Mccarthy and Bo Nix

Because he was drafted third many people have an unrealistic expectation that he will automatically become this top 10 quarterback. That is not by any stretch a sure thing.

His accuracy consistency and decision making are weaknesses. Hopefully, McDaniels fixes him

There's been a lot of media chatter regarding Drake Maye not looking great. The spray throws, the missed reads. I fully anticipated that the transition to the JMcD system would take some time. Are you legitimately concerned or is this just media hype and unrealistic expectations that Maye should be looking like a top 5 QB early on in year two?
It depends on what your expectations are, I guess.

I'm expecting him to be a caretaker 1st part of the year and making a bonehead play here and there and better in Nov/Dec.
This is where I am at. Slowly take the training wheels off him as the season progresses. I am pretty much throwing last season out as far as any sort of first step, development, etc. Drake is learning a new, more complex offense and learning how to prepare and read defenses at an NFL level. This isn't meant to be a Mayo/AVP slam but based Jason McCourty on the last preseason broadcast saying that AVP barely talked in Drake's helmet compared to Josh who is in his ear to the last second it makes me think Drake wasn't getting the level of coaching he needed. I am sure there are a few things Maye can take away from last year but overall I am still viewing him closer to a rookie than anything else.

Come on Sam. Penix, JJ and Williams have done nothing to show they are better. Always add a negative spin even when it’s not warranted

What if JJ McCarthy - Bo Nix and Penix Jr look like world beaters in year two?? What are we to think if our guy struggles??
