Drake Maye appreciation thread

Nah, It was the defense: cover 3, takes away the deep shots, they dared Maye to try deep shots and he did what he should do. Maybe if he had Chase or Hill he could have taken a shot but Colts took that away and they don't have the elite WR to overcome that..
Yup. And most of the redzone issues were penalties anyways.

No question Maye has been much better, faster than most anticipated with such a bad roster. Hopes are high for '25.

However, his accuracy has been the one area he needs quite a bit of improvement.
He has missed several throws in each game (like the would-be TD to Henry that got picked and cost the game)
He mostly misses the intermediate crossing patterns - often behind the receiver.

This can be improved, and is one of the few things young QB's can easily correct with a good offseason.
That, and more ability (experience) to finesse OL protection &/or audible out of bad run plays will put him on the path to top 10 QB.

Go talk to Tomlin about Pickens. If there's one thing we know about Tomlin, he's not going to sign Pickens. Pickens will be avalable next year.

As for the draft we missed badly on, I'll say it again: it was a while ago. And almost none of the 9 receivers taken in 1st round are still with their teams, and one of them who is still with his team, Deebo, is a big mistake. He is hugely overpaid.

Of the 9 teams that took WRs that year, only one team is happy: Seattle with Metcalf, the last of the WRs taken.
WR's and hugely overpaid are now synonymous nothing we can do about that.

What's your take on QB Drew Allar is he the next Drake Maye?? I know a lot of people who like him if he declares.

Have you seen how much Samuel is underperforming his contract? I'm not talking about the fact that WRs make a lot of money. I'm talking about a total lack of production.

Half the catches for half the yards.

Total of 70 yards rushing on the ground for the entire year.

2.9ypc average.

Wish we had their problems Deebo would be a #1 here.

I answered in the other thread. Everyone said Maye didn't process well in college, yet we see now that it's actually a strength of his. Allar locks onto his first receiver and doesn't process well. But that may be a function of having not much talent at the WR position on offense, so he locks onto his TE.

Physically, he compares well to Maye. Bigger, but slower, same cannon arm. Allar can also throw accurately and with strength when he is off platform. They are similar that way. Allar can run it, but not nearly as well as Maye.

Maye has proven he can move well within the pocket. There is no evidence that Allar has the same feel for the pocket.

So, in other words, you don't know if Allar is going to crumble in the pocket in the NFL, and you don't know if he can read a defense and process well. But they said the same thing about Maye lsat year.

I would not be surprised if Allar is incredibly excellent in the NFL. He throws better than Penix and Nix, but he's surrounded by poor support on offense, and he hasn't shown any of the abilities which can counter the narrative.

Optimistic take: Allar is a bigger slower Drake Maye, but he can run, he's nimble, and he throws well. It's a decent comparison IF you're assuming Allar is things he hasn't yet shown.

At this point,
I'd rather put up with weekly headaches from Pickens if he provides another 1200 yards instead of Tyquan "Manute Bol" Thornton acting like an eagle scout all week but ending up on a milk carton every sunday.

Pickens gets open and catches the ball! Tyquan gets jammed, and he turns into a pumpkin.

You need good leadership to handle a guy like Pickens, and we have the worst in the league, both coaches and players (aside from Maye and maybe a few others).

I mean, Tyquan was cut several weeks ago, so Im not sure what we're talking about. A 10 yard catch from Pickens couple with a 15 yd penalty means you're going backwards, and if you're paying the guy $25m a year, that's a problem

Here we go again: fans who want to save Bob Krafts money and hope we catch lightning in a bottle in the Draft. Players who can play will get paid regardless of what Patsfans think about them. I don't get your hate for a guy who puts up consistent numbers with ****ty QB's.

I don't like going backwards 5 yards.

Anyway, Tomlin has been openly blasting this guy in the media.

If you have a headcase whose attitude is detrimental to the team, you're actually not going to win.

So they're 9-3 without him...I get it.

@upstater1 Pickens is a very accomplished Contested football catcher. Pickens attacks the football in the air very few CBs get that 50/50 Ball. He needs a QB we Need Receivers I would call the Patriots and George Pickens a perfect match.

I can't contain myself with how excited I am about this kid. He's got it all: skills, demeanor, leadership, competitiveness and drive. He's a GREAT teammate. When something goes wrong, he puts the blame on his shoulders, UNLIKE his laughable embarrassment of a coach.

I was wrong about holding him out until the line is league average. I was a prominent member of the group that worried about his health and development should he be thrown into this mess, but I underestimated him. He's so good he can thrive even in 2024 hell-scape of a season, with the worst coaching staff ever assembled for an NFL team and the weakest talent of any team in the league. Hindsight is 20/20. The great ones rise above and elevate their teams, no matter the circumstances. What a player. If Kraft ****s this up (and I believe he will) over loyalty to useless Jerod Mayo, it will be unforgivable. He will go down in infamy in NE.

Regarding his greatness as a teammate, how good is this quote on his one interception Sunday? I'd follow this guy into battle.

“Yeah, just try to get to him quick and hopefully he gets in,” said Maye when asked about the play after the game. “I think I put on the wrong shoulder. I think if maybe I put on the opposite shoulder away from the defender, I think that’s maybe a completion there. But it was just unfortunate that it got tipped up. So, just a bummer.”
I’m not a fan of appreciation threads but this one is well deserved. The guy makes watching the games much more enjoyable!

Thanks. Helpful information
Great thing about it is we are comparing draft candidates to Drake Maye
You only do that when a player in the NFL has stardom status
Can’t believe we landed a possible future star so quick after TB leaving

I just pray (literally) that he makes it through this season completely healthy.
