The frustrating part is that if we were picking #1 and it was TEN/CLE/NYG in the next 3 slots, they'd probably have been able to trade that #1 pick to whoever was picking #3 so that team can take Cam Ward, then at #3 you get whoever is left of Carter/Hunter. Get the elite prospect AND haul of picks. Now we, most likely, end up with neither of those prospects nor a haul of picks.
No sense crying over spilled milk though. As annoying as it is, not really sure what else they could have done. They played backups. The guys on the field and the coaches all have some level of competitive integrity and a desire to make themselves look good for their career arcs. I guess maybe Kraft could have fired Mayo in the week leading up to the game to put the team in total chaos? IDK, could have just as easy had a galvanizing effect as it did help the tank. It is what it is.
All that said, as much as Carter/Hunter are the top 2 prospects, most years someone else emerges. If I had to bet on it, I'd take the field for ending up a better player than one of those guys. It's on the front office to draft that guy if he's out there. Or at the least get #3 if those guys do in fact end up #1 and #2. (All those rankings ignoring QBs, of course.)
