Don't feel bad about pats defense

And what do those numbers have to do with the pats defense as presently constituted? Answer: nothing. With the interior pass rush gone, the only good coverage LB gone and 4 out of the top 5 secondary players either out or significantly hobbled, I wouldn't take this defense over anybody.

then I guess you don't have to watch

here's a hanky

Ok. Why the hostility? So many bedwetters on this site. I'm just pointing out that the players out on the field, kind of, you know, matter, and a lot of the guys that got us that high ranking are now gone. So the stat is irrelevant.

what hostility?

really?

wilfork has been out for 6 games
mayo out for 4

I'd say we just had the best rush defense game of the year.....newton gets his yards from time to time and that can't be a knock on the rushing defense....their RB's got 2 yards per carry

as for the pass defense, matt ryan threw for 400 with virtually everyone there, so I would not say our pass defense has lost a step.......it kept newton below his average

Am I correct in thinking that we were playing a lot of 3-4 against Carolina?

We may not do that against Denver and take our lumps against their run game, but I wouldn't be heartbroken to see more big defense for the rest of the season. The best crop of teams isn't nearly as pass heavy as it was a few years ago, so we would probably fare better.

yes.....I mentioned this last week in starting a thread with carolina's difficulties with the 3-4.

but even more so, jones and ninko were in coverage quite a bit.....

bringing sopoaga in is a godsend.......give a team flexibility when they need it and gives us an anchor we didn't have after wilfork got hurt. he frees up spikes.....who I think is destined to make his $$ with a hit on manning that will hurt.... I think you will see a few improvised blitzes for the pats on the inside......if there's one thing that can derail the audibles manning does, it's a little improvisation. a play call here or there where you take someone who tends to be a coverage liability to take the opportunity get after the QB.....and hurt him

I think denver offense is quite a bit different, but I think the ability to disguise coverage is the best weapon the pats have given their injuries.

I agree about the run defense playing pretty well. It seemed like every time they ran up the middle on first down it got stuffed. But I disagree about the pass defense. Matt Ryan threw for a ton of yards because we were up 30-13 late in the game and went into prevent. Monday night's game was very short, the clock almost never stopped, resulting in Newton not having as big of a sample size. He tore our defense up, there's no denying it, even if the totals aren't huge.

With the Forehead coming to town, I'm thinking our defense (with its backfield in shambles) might just be playing prevent all night. Just draw a line in the sand at the 20.

Julius Thomas and Welker are banged up and might not play, or may not be all that effective. Double team Demaryius and take your chance with the other guys.
But yeah, the draw-a-line at the twenty sounds about right. The forecasted windy, cold weather will help though. We all know how pink forehead plays in temps under 32.

all 3 TD drives by the panthers were drives that included at least one big run by newton.

newton was 5-5 getting 1st downs by running on 3rd down. that single thing broke down how the pats had to cover the pass......runs of 14, 15 , 24 yards that happened because the pass rush got a little over zealous (but should be even more zealous with manning)....those weren't planned runs, but newton had perfect opportunities where the pass rush got behind him so off he went.....wasn't keeping him in the pocket the biggest thing they preached before the game?

So what's your point? Just like in the 07 and 11 super bowl vs the NYG, and almost all of the team's regular season losses (almost all by one score in the final 4 minutes of a game), the Patriots defense couldn't stop a team going for the win on a final drive. Stopping a 3-5 Buffalo team with a McCourty end zone INT doesn't count; they haven't and CAN'T stop a good team when they need to. Look it up, the Patriots record in one score games vs playoff teams/teams with winning records is absolutely ABYSMAL.

I put that "75 yard" 14 yard run on Chandler Jones. The rush was there and had Newton back tracking, and Jones rolled out a red carpet for Newton to take the inside. Obviously, it would have helped if Nink drags him down, and there's no guarantee that Newton doesn't get 20 yards down the sideline, but I think giving him the inside left us marooned.

My optimistic side hopes that the 3-4 with Chris Jones and Vellano as DE's creates some more interior rush, specifically Jones. Clearly Soap demands more attention inside, and that frees up everyone.

I am so proud of our defense. With so many injuries, we are really doing well. Rock on, boys! :rocker:

Where is Jamie Collins?? This guy was a top draft pick and was supposed to have some wheels in pass coverage. Why does he only get 2 snaps in that Carolina game? I would hope to see him more in this weekend's game unless he's not completely getting the system.

Yes, the Pats played a lot of 3-4 against Carolina. Carolina is a run first team. A two gap 3-4 is built to stop the run (not as good vs. the pass). That is why the Pats used a 3-4 base. It worked well since other than a few runs by Newton, the Pats shut down the Panthers' running attack.

Do the opposite. Attack, take away the short crap that he has been living on and make him beat you deep.
The worst thing you can do is play off and let them complete -2 to +3 yard passes and get run after catch. They will hit 80% of those and gain 8-10 or more a pop.
This lets Manning get rid of the ball quickly and never get hit, and hides his noodle arm. Overdefend the short stuff, and make him stay in the pocket for a slower developing play and show he has the arm strength to hit it.
They will get a few, but the Denver offense is about the receivers, not the QB and the death by 1000000 paper cuts of dump off passes will kill you much worse than making Manning be a QB that throws the ball down the field.
