Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Jedd Fisch, the head coach at Washington where Steve Belichick is the DC, is a HELLUVA coach.

He worked with the Patriots in 2020 as the QB coach. When he left, Bill was uncharacteristic in his praise of him.

If things unravel in Foxboro in the upcoming next few years, he’ll be a hot commodity and a natural fit with New England.

What made you think Chuks was a solid move? His low salary because 31 other GMs didn't want him? Getting benched in Pitt? Having a bad attitude on the only team he played for? Playing 30 games over 6 years? Did you like the Riley Reiff signing too,?
Reiff no. Steelers former GM said they always intended for Chuks to play LT. Still young and athletic. Went the worst possible way it could.

Only in DEI-infested America do nfl head coaches get hired with no, um, head coaching experience.

It didn’t used to work that way.

But that helps the coach ranks. A guy like Jedd Fisch at the University of Washington, whose nfl coaching experience dwarves Mayo’s, took a pile of garbage that was the University of Arizona football program a few years back to a ten-win season.

And look what he did last night against a more talented Michigan team. Dude is an exceptional coach.

Mayo is still trying to figure out if he’s too nice to the players.

Way to go, Robert. If the team loses today, you will be seeing empty seats in future home games.

I think Mayo's future will depend on the Defense. If they turn into a hapless bunch then I think it will force Kraft's hand. As of now I still think he gets 3 years. I could see them bringing in an assistant/advisor head coach next year.

A lot that is out of Mayo's control - an insane number of injuries to key players, lack of depth, Rhamondre's fumblitis.

I've been clear since his being made HC that I thought it was a great decision. Nothing has made me think otherwise.
Good for you! I guess we'll see which one of us has made the right call (as time always tells).

Given the size of the mess he inherited, and the rash of injuries they've suffered this year, Mayo has probably earned until at least the bye in 2025.

The only way I can see him getting fired before then is if he does stupid ish like Ime Udoka or Urban Meyer did.

As long as Brissett is QB the D is in trouble. No way they can hold up having to play 40+ minutes a game because the O can't get it together.

btw, It's looking more and more like Steve B was the brains behind the D.

Good loss today. Pats had the lead on a beautiful New England autumn afternoon and had a shot to win it at the end. A loss helps more than a win. Have to think for the future. Props to Mayo for hanging in there with reality on how much potential this team has vs. a positive future.

The defense? It's always been the QB - especially when you're not a x's and o's guy like Mayo. When Maye eventually plays, but turns out to be a bust, Mayo's ass will be kicked out of Gillette quickly since he's not a guy that can elevate anything else.

I've seen the Dan Campbell reference. The only reason Campbell is still around is because the GM has picked an NFL leading 12 future Pro Bowl players since 2017 and they have a top 3 OC. The Pats have not drafted ONE Pro Bowl player since 2013. Wolf is off to a horrendous start.

That play calling sequence before the half was mind boggling. A 7 yard run then two passes leaving Miami with plenty of time and a timeout. The coaching today was a mess.

Mayo is drowning, his decision making is and has been awful and Il not talking about Maye, the choice of staff, terrible off season getting free agents, not focusing on the O line in March and beyond. The kraft’s have just as much to blame. I doubt we will see a goos team here for a very long time, probably 5-10 years. Well we had 20 good ones so there are he memories.

I thought it was worse at the end of the 4th when they were running well and had plenty of time and decide to start throwing the ball, they should have run at least a couple more times, they averaged over 7 yards a carry.

Yes I am fully aware this is highly unlikely but the only way I see it happening is if he loses the locker room especially since he was hired because he connects with the players. The reason I started this thread (which I am sure many will hate) is because there seems to be some cracks in the foundation already.

Godchaux recently called out some nameless guys on the defense calling them selfish and insinuating there is some freelancing going on. I think most of us have surmised that he is likely talking about Keion White or Josh Uche. Guys looking out for number one already only a month in is a recipe for disaster.

Demario Douglas openly voiced his displeasure about his lack of targets and Brissett spoke to him on it. Douglas still seems to be pretty demonstrative on the field with his palms up in the air on occasion and per Evan Lazar some pretty visible frustration on the all 22. There was also rumors he was walking back to the locker room early before the end of the game on Sunday. To this one I say, "Who the hell is Demario Douglas to act this way?" There looks to be some talent there but he's a second year 6th round pick coming off a 60 for 650 year. He isn't exactly Calvin Johnson.

Three team leaders out for the foreseeable future in the last couple games. Bentley, Andrews, and the word is Dugger will likely miss some time. Three missing captains in the locker room of a young, struggling team with a young head coach trying to right the ship. If we already have guys not buying in like Douglas and the unnamed defensive players not having team captains around isn't going to help.

This is obviously speculation but I get the feeling that Mayo isn't on the same page with AVP and potentially Wolfe, on when Maye plays. Mayo when asked about the starter going forward after the Jets game responded with "I don't know" then quickly backtracked in his next interview with some nonsense about "watching the tape" which to me reading between the lines is he was told Brissett would remain the starter. Maybe I am wrong but Mayo has called AVP the "head coach of the offense" which could be read multiple ways but the fact that Maye isn't playing yet seems to point to AVP.

Alex Van Pelt. I know most on here were as underwhelmed with the AVP hire as I was but he seemed to be the first guy that actually say yes which obviously isn't a good thing. I did just mention how I don’t think him and Mayo are on the same page on the Maye timeline and I think some of that stems from AVP not wanting to reduce/change the playbook for a rookie with a different skillset. Not adapting to the starter is what got him canned in Cleveland last year. Van Pelt was able to piece it together with numerous journeymen quarterbacks and get solid results but when it came time to adapting his offense to a guy with a different skillset he allegedly balked and wanted to make Watson play his way. Obviously that isn't a power struggle he was going to win seeing how the Browns sold their soul for Watson but that isn't the approach I would want for our rookie quarterback with a vert limited supporting cast. In addition to any overall philosophy issues or starting quarterback debate AVP just doesn't seem to be a very good coordinator. The real all "All 22" tape nerds like Greg Bedard and Evan Lazar haven't loved what they have seen. Lazar basically has said AVP isn't getting guys in position to succeed with screens or misdirection to help aide the terrible offensive line. Bedard highlighted a play from Sunday on a toss play to Stevenson that lost 7 yards because he had Thornton in the slot trying to block a guy and got blown up.

The outside noise. I know everyone wants to pretend that NFL coaches and players just "ignore the noise" but we all know that isn't the reality. Mayo's new kinder and gentler approach with the media is what it is, but with more and more pitchforks starting to come out and some hard decisions on the horizon Mayo's feet really could be held to the fire soon. It doesn't help that his former coach and franchise legend is taking not so veiled shots at him and the organization. A lot of the media and fanbase are going to take Bill's word as gospel whether he has an axe to grind or not. I don't know think media scrutiny is going to be a huge factor in any decisions the new regime or owner make but it definitely isn't making things easier.

I know right now the thought of moving on from Mayo is extremely premature but so far things seem to be going about as poorly as they could. My issue is that the coaching staff he has to heavily rely on isn't very good and he may not even have the authority to dictate the personnel on the field. Combine that with locker room issues starting to bubble up when avoiding things like that was supposed to be Mayo's specialty it makes me pretty concerned with how things may go over the next 4 months or so.
It's on the table. The spin surrounding a 1-16 season losing 16 straight would have to be incredible for him to keep his job.

SB made the correct call leaving the Pats. Now he is building value for himself. NFL people are always surveying the college ranks for talent in all forms.

Imagine if he stayed in NE after losing to the Dolphins 3rd string QB and best RB absent.

A "chance"? Certainly. I am frankly rooting for a likelihood at this point. The team is badly coached...period.
