Does anyone know anything about the Bills (or care)?

Remember the 1st game last season? Were it not for 2 super catches by Ben Watson (remember him?) and a fumbled KO return, it was a big W for the Bills.

Uh, oh. Watson's gone!

We're living on borrowed time

The Bills were not named after a barbershop quartet.

My submission to re-naming the Buffalo Bills?

The Buffalo Chips.

Then Wikipedia has it all wrong.

The Buffalo Humps

I'd say that Buffalo are majestic animals.

Proof;

Yea, decently majestic.

Then Wikipedia has it all wrong.

Is that possible? I could submit that the Patriots were named after a terrorist group in Wikipedia...

Here's what it says there now:

The Bills were named as the result of the winning entry in a local contest, which named the team after the AAFC Buffalo Bills, a previous football franchise from the All-America Football Conference that merged with the Cleveland Browns in 1950. That team, in turn, was named after William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

This is accurate.

Anyway, since Buffalo's name is the same as an animal's, they didn't really have too many options. I mean, they couldn't be named after a different animal, like a lot of other teams. Also, if they named themselves something else, it would always suggest a Buffalo doing something or being a certain way: call ourselves the Buffalo Titans and you see a huge Buffalo...call ourselves the Buffalo Patriots and what do you get? A patriotic Buffalo. The Buffalo Saints? Well behaved Buffaloes. See where I'm going with this? I think the play on words was one of the only ways to go.

We could have called ourselves the Buffalo Stampede or something like that, but that sounds like an Arena League name or kinda cheesy.

I don't understand the wholesale changes on defense. The Bills defense seemed to be coming together late in the year and looked to have the makings of very good young unit. I don't understand bringing in a new system when you're so close with a young group. I thought the Davis, Troup and Carrington moves were pretty good, but I don't see difference makers in that group. Is it worth the risk of a potentially great player like Pozluzny or Byrd not fitting the system?

The Bills sucked big-time against the run and had a very poor pass rush...for years. We felt bigger guys on the line instead of faster, smaller guys was in order, especially in Buffalo's weather. We also picked up Dwan Edwards from Baltimore to play DE along with Stroud, who is good and healthy again. Kyle Williams is a good player, and he'll be playing NT when Troup isn't.

Our linebacker core has potential in the 3-4. We are moving our #11 overall pick from last year, Aaron Maybin to OLB, where he was MUCH better suited to play in the first place rather than DE. Kawika Mitchell and Andra Davis have experience in the 3-4...I wouldn't worry too much about Poz making the adjustment. We have a lot of guys moving from DE to LB, including Aaron Schobel, if he doesn't retire.

Don't think the change will affect our secondary, which is very good, including great depth. It can only help them, since they relatively weren't getting very much help from the front seven before the switch anyway. I heard we'll being playing more man-to-man this year too, which is a good move IMO.

Anyway, we'll show different looks in different situations, including playing the 4-3 at times.

I like the change.

Buffalo could have built offensively in this draft, while adding a piece or two to bolster an emerging defense. Now they essentially start over, installing a new system with rookies and questionable veteran fits while giving a potentially elite 3-RB attack no blocking and no running game.

First off, it's Buffalo's plan to rebuild mainly through the draft and pick up role players in free agency. It's a process, and there is only so much you can do in one year. Everything they do is deliberate, and, if you follow the team, you get the sense that they have a long-term plan and are sticking to it. They're in it for the long haul.

You can argue that picking CJ Spiller helps this offense quite a bit. He can make plays on his own, can line up in the slot or on the outside. He can do it all, or could in college. Anyway, our interior of the o-line is decent...it's the Tackles that are the issue. I guess the plan is for the coaches to evaluate the developmental guys in practice before thinking about making a serious move to trade for a LT: Gaither from the Ravens or Brown from the Saints are still both possibilities.

Also, we have some pretty good prospects at WR that haven't seen much playing time that could end up panning out. You gotta develop these guys with real-game experience, not slap another T.O. in there, which gets you nowhere. At least we'll see what we have.

Believe me, the playcalling will be better under Gailey, and he is an offensive guy, so he'll find ways to be creative with what he's got and play to the strengths of the players.

On the bright side. The 2011 draft appears to be rich in top tier QB talent. Buffalo will probably take a safety.

Jauron would take a safety. Gailey and Nix won't. Let's hope there isn't a lockout in 2011. You make a good point, though. There were slim-pickings at QB this year, and I guess Buffalo didn't like a guy like Jimmy Clausen enough to invest a chunk of their future in him. Pick the wrong QB that high, and it sets you back for years.

The Bills had twenty-something guys on injured reserve by the end of the season last year. We were the most hurt team by far. We were a mess in a lot of ways. Bringing in a new Strength and Conditioning program will help a lot.

I guess we now have the answer to my questions. Not much.

Yep, not many people here care too much about the Bills, which is understandable since the Pats have more or less owned them over the past 6 years or so. Good reason not to pay too much attention and conclude...the Bills? They just suck, and that's all I need to know. But they WILL come and bite you on the ass one of these years and you'll wonder where THAT came from. I know, sounds real scary, but the tables will turn or at least even out sooner or later.

I met Jim Kelly and his brother. Jim Kelly is a great guy.

Buffalo was the Dynasty that nobody talks about. 4 straight Super Bowl appearances. They had the first SB won if not for a missed FG.

Buffalo has talent, but they havent been able to put all the pieces together for awhile. They played the Pats tough last September and if not for a KO fumble, its doubtful NE would have won that game.

Actually, Jim Kelly is kind of a douche.

Undoubtedly true.

Certainly, by all the laws of logic they should have taken the first game last year (although that had a lot to do with large parts of the Patriots simply not turning up).

And when the tables are turned we'll start to remember those egregious b*st*rds who went on a "Bernard Pollard" bandwagon (having whined and moaned about a much less flagrant and almost certainly accidental hit by Vince Wilfork) but who don't bother us much now.

Yes, indeed. Everything changes ... except, the Jets will STILL suck! :singing:

How about them Dolphins?

Different level of suckage. It's really more like rubbing it in now that the wheel's turned. As Bills fans can attest to, the Dolphins had no problem lording over everyone when they were on top. That's a much quieter fan base now that the team's been looking up at the better teams instead of being one of them.

I don't think a lot of Dolphins fans know their ass from a hole in the ground about football anyway.

You miss Dennis Miller on Monday Night, don't you?

Thing is the smart money's on later...by which time your Bills may be playing in a reconfigured AFCW if not the new NFLE.

Ralph keeps trying to do the back to the future thing with his old school hires he can relate to. The sport has passed him by, as it did Al...

Oh, yeah. Well, Mo Lewis DOESN'T rock; how about that?

Thank you for your candid and vicious attack on my team. May I please refer you to the "Jets suck" thread, where you belong.

Buffalo Bison would've been perfect. Bills just makes no sense, because Buffalo Bill Cody was a Wild West guy. They have a buffalo (bison) on their helmet anyway, not a caricature of Bill Cody. Why is the city named Buffalo anyway? They should've named it Denver, then Denver could've been named Buffalo and its team could've been the Bills. Those people screwed it all up.

you can't see it, but I'm playing a violin as I type this.

in 2008 the pats got shredded with injuries, lost a hof qb, and still managed to contend for the division with 11 wins.
although, you guys could claim you field a suck qb EVERY year, but at least they can prepare for that.
