Why stop there? Let's change it from 16 to 162 games a season. After all, they're getting paid millions, so let them earn it.

That's roughly three games a week for a whole year. Even I would get tired of football under those conditions.

Keep the 16 games and reduce the pre season. Injuries will obviously increase with more games.

Heck we could cut it down to 4 games and do away with practices and preseason, think of how many injuries we would cut out.

The NFL wants to increase neutral contries and sites. The rest of the world does't care about the NFL only US transplants to foreighn countries. It wont impact the home attendance because the game (s) may be played at other venues. An increase in rosters would be imperative and existing player contracts would have to be raised for the extra games. Chances of getting two banged up teams in the stuper bowl would be magnified. Of course with the new girly rules the quarterbacks should be dressed in pink with a flag for the defensive player to grab. It's all about GREED for the NFL and owners but NFG for the players.

Put me down for an 18 game season.Dump two pre-season games which are meaningless.

I have to say I don't like paying for the preseason games, but I do enjoy watching them, to see who will make the team and what plays they are running. I'd rather that the preseason games cost less. But I don't have a big problem with four games.

You tend to see more injuries the first couple and last couple weeks. The longer preseason, I believe, helps get the players in football shape.

Clearly lengthening the season will lead to more injuries. You'll see playoff games decided by lots of undrafted free agents.

I think if the league truly want to add an increased interest in the league, and make more money from more games, add another round of playoffs, and take out the bye-week in the playoffs.

There would be more interesting games at the end of the year, vice more games that may mean nothing.

Just a thought.

In theory, the more games you have the less chance of a worser side fluking it into the playoffs. For example, if last season was 18 games we would of been ahead of the dolphins.

The one thing you cannot do is make the regular season a formality. If you had 16/18 teams in the playoffs instead of 12 then the regular season will lose watchability.

My short answer to this question is an emphatic NO! I DO NOT want to see a 17 or 18-game regular season. I would like to see preseason shortened, however.

Keep it at 16, plus cut preseason games down to 2-3...Please!

I mean noone gives a **** about preseason, right? Just as long as these teams stay healthy, that is.

All in all - more games = more injuries. Goodell is already driving the league into the ground.

personally i find too much 4 pre-season games with today's schedule of 16 games

3 would be enough

Many seem to want 3 preseason...but balk on 17 or 18 games..even though so many WANT that..it's not really a viable option...and that is veacuse the revenue for football is based on 20 games..16 and 4. That has been thatw ay for many many years..even when there wa sonly 14 games, there were 6 preseason...so it would have to be back a fwe decades. There is ZERO chance of that happening!! Nrither the players or the owners want to have less revenue..so that is a non starter. The ONLY question really is whether it be 1 or 2 games added. In my mind Goodell gas already prematurely made the decision that 16 game season is hostory. I think it would take a monumental rising up to keep it the way it has been. So will it be 1 or 2 games?? I really dislihe either option for the offseason schedule has been pretty much in a groove and with any adding of games, this will have to be changed. Who knows what and how it will all be. They can add ganmes, but with that will come larger rosters and a closer look at where byes are. It would be totally unfair to have a team have a bye in week 3 and then have 15 weeks of playing games.I am sure there are other issues as well that have not been thought about. There are issues of player development and talent evaluation that will need to be looked at as well as 2 or 3 games hardly gives either of those time. It is here that Goodell has talked about a spring developmental league which I think is a great idea...but implementing that idea is needed and it is obvious anything like that has hardly been talked about more than an idea to throw out on the table. This would need to go hand in hand with the extension of the season, not an afterthought like it is now. I still think injuries will be an issue and wear and tear on players. The last team standing may be the one most injury free, not necessarily the best. It is getting closer to that now and adding games will only insure that is more the case. And that is NOT making the NFL better.

Count me among those who feel the season is already pretty long. I don't feel that there is a need to expand it by one more regular season game by reducing the number of preseason games.

I think they should just reduce the number of preseason games to three and if the coaches see fit to play more games with their backups then they themselves can arrange a scrimmage.

Too many injuries in the game as it is (which is why there are all these new "protective" rules being introduced every year) to expand the schedule by even one more game.

I like to watch football. The 16 game season is better than the 14 game season, which was better than the 12 game season.

Why 18? Go to 20. Two bye weeks. No preseason games, only a few scrimmages with other teams, not full games.

They play 20 games now, just change out exhibition for regular season.

The long off-season sucks. Why would anyone not want more football?

Using injuries as a reason for not going to 18 games is thinking inside the box.

Expand your mind. There are better ways to deal with injuries than not playing football.

Expand the roster to 60 players. Expand the practice squad to 15 players. Allow 10 practice squad players who cannot be signed away by other teams. Allow each team two or three tempoarary DL players that can come back onto the team during the season after they heal.

Lots of ways if you open your mind.

If you like to watch football.

You know, inserted in your post was a brilliant idea --- for any length season including 16 games --- that I've never heard before. Each team could get one bye in Weeks 5-7 and one bye in Weeks 10-12. I'm also sneaking in the idea that more teams could have byes at the same time (e.g. 12 per week instead of 4) so that byes wouldn't be throughout every week of the season.

From PFFT regarding what the Commish said about expansion...

http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/

As to the potential expansion of the regular season, Aiello explained that Goodell didn’t say that he hopes to present a proposal for a vote at the next ownership meetings in May 2009. “He said it’s possible there could be a vote at the May meeting,” Aiello said. “He did not rule it out. It depends on how the analysis progresses.”
If anyone saw the news conference, it is hard to believe that the analysis will be nothing but a formal stamp of approval. It was if he was hell-bent on this 17-18 game schedule no matter what....I wonder why the change of heart??

I want to strangle Goodell. We need a fan uprising against this bozo. He's done a few good things (re., addressing the criminal element), but he's on his way to causing more harm than good. I've never seen a commissioner in any pro sport so "high profile" and trying to change things. Aren't the damn owners supposed to be in charge?

I totally agree....but by far the WORST thing I have ever heard from him was in that news conference when he made a big deal about the quality of preseason games and how that HAD to be improved. He mentioned that a few times which to me means that this pinhead does not understand that ANY team with sense is NOT going to play a preseason game with the same intensity as a REAL game. I was frankly shocked he made that argument so many times. The quality of the game in fact is being compromised with lengthening the season 1 or 2 games AND of course adding one international and/or neutral site game into the season. He quickly avoided answering on health or of players reactions to that.
When asked about the feedback from the study on this he said
"We can fo this and do this effectively..." Seems to me like HE has already made his mind up. My thinking is that talent evaluation and player development will basically be trashed for the preseason. CoachB has said it really takes only two games to get a team ready for vets. The bozos WILL have to address how talent evaluation and development will happen..in what way, whether that is early camp, a developmental league or some other way that that can happen. It will change the offseason and preseason schedule big time and I dod not think that has been looked at at all, as has roster expansion, byes etc. But the 17-18 game expansion is on the fast track, the consequences be damned.
But the big news from that is preseason games are not up to NFL standards.
I agree..I THINK there should be an uprising as he is going to ruin the NFL. I have followed sports for a long time now..many decades and I have never seen a more arrogant and dangerous commish in any sport.
IUnfortunately this is NOT a complete video of the conference..a few interesting questions were left out..but you can hear all about preseason games and how the wuality should be better.
Goodell plans to propose longer regular season to owners
