Should Nfl Teams rest players when they have nothing else to gain?

  • No. Approach the game like any other even if it means risking injury. Keep all momentum

  • Yes. They shouldnt risk injury, and it keeps players fresh.

???

They came out dominating, not flat. Then Brady (who'd played in the season's final game) brainlocked on a screen pass and Crumpler dropped an easy TD.

Cant that be coumted as coming out flat. Im not suggesting they execute those plays if they approacjed the end of the season differently. But they clearly were not at their best that day

Edit, Yes Brady played but only a half I Believe. I dont know how only playing a half effects your "Edge" I think that ultimately depends on preparation leading up to the game you only play a half in

IMO it is an individual player decision. If one or two weeks if rest can help a player to improve then consider it, if it doesn't improve the situation then continue to play.

Football is a risk sport.

Do what is right to win.

This is a simple ABC answer:
(A) Team X wins the SB
(B) If Team X rested their starters it was a brilliant, SB winning move.
(C) If Team X did not to rest their starters it was a brilliant, SB winning move.

Outside of that it's all academic and unlikely a 'one answer fits all' question and answer (though I am a believer that too many weeks -- a la Indy and their 4 weeks off some years ago -- without meaningful game intensity is likely not good).

No. And i dont see how the 2009 colts supports the 'rest hurts' argument. If anything its hurts that argument. They MADE the super bowl and beat the afc teams fairly easy on the way there, which is a good result for how that team especially manning normally performs in january. They lost to a 14 win saints team and were in that game right until mannings pick 6. Them not winning that game had nothing to do witg resting players more than a month earlier.

To me it seemed like they ruined the momentum that team had. Thats just my opinion though

I wouldnt say it did. The beat the ravens 20-3 and the jets 30-17 on the way to the sb, thats about as comfortable as it gets these days in terms of playoff wins. If resting affected their momentum theyd have lost one of those games, not the super bowl 6 weeks later.
