McCourty is a superb DB if and only if he's used properly.

By the way, the same is true of Revis.

There actually were 6 second-team safeties. So McCourty really only has been chosen to be top 8. And it seems that there's disagreement as to who the best safeties are.

Does Brady have a permanent All Pro selection? Because he should.

Curran's piece on Ghost getting screwed contradicts that.

But Gostkowski was beaten out for Associated Press All-Pro honors by both Justin Tucker of the Ravens (first team) and the Broncos Matt Prater (second team). The All-Pro teams are voted on by a panel of 50 voters. I got one of them there votes. And I cast it for Gostkowski. At a position where production is so easily quantifiable, there should have been a lot more for the Patriots kicker.

Which is aided by the fact that Manning got all 50 votes and there is no 2nd team QB (Just like Brady got all 50 in 2010)

2x All-pro at two different positions in the space of four years and, presumably, a mentor for Harmon and Ryan. I'd say BB got his first round money's worth with the pick.

DMcC has been a good pick, I'm not sure that's even worth debating.

We can all appreciate his leadership, attitude, work ethic, and versatility; and that's not even bringing up his speed, range, and overall talent. He seems to be the perfect Patriot player up for a nice extension in my opinion, especially since Ninkovich (limited talent but overachieves in every way, and has many of the same qualities of DMcC) has signed his extension this year.

I can respect the debate for specific rankings, as everyone will have their differing opinions, but Devin McCourty would almost surely be ranked in the top 6-8 in almost everyone's list in a worst case scenario. Is he top 2-3? I'm not so sure, but he's damn good, and offers us a lot of fine qualities.

Now let's hope he's not expecting money in the range of his brother, Jason--because that may not be realistic here in N.England.

Reading back through this thread has been great for some revisionist comedy.

I can't wait to see the Patriots extend McCourty and have him cement his position as one of, if not the best Free Safety in the NFL.

He's certainly well on his way. I think it'd be hard to hold back that kind of excellent leadership, attitude, and work ethic in the future---especially coupled with the kind of above average talent that he possesses.

Some will have him as their top choice, others as 1-3, and even more as a top 5-6 safety. Some would even have him as a top 8-10. All of that is irrelevant in my opinion. The bottom line is that he's an important piece of our secondary for the current/future no matter how you look at it, and we all should hope that he's locked up ASAP.

I generally try to look at the importance of a player with a simple question supa: "What does the team look like with his replacement playing?" Without McCourty, the Patriots Secondary is in a world of trouble no matter how much improvement our Corners show. Frankly, the guy is simply that good at covering open space and shutting down route running capabilities.

I am very much looking forward to seeing McCourty's full repertoire when Gregory is upgraded or one of the rookies develop into the starter at SS.

But.. but.. But.. he was a 1st round pick at corner.. so he's a bust cause he's not playing there.. [/sarcasm]

I think what they mean is that the second team is made up of the highest vote getters that didn't make the first team. Hence if 6 were on the second team, they all tied (or possibly there was a clear #3 S and all the others tied at 4th) which explains why there are more at some positions than others.
Each getting 1 is an educated guess. Perhaps they each got 2 or 3.
