Hi guys,
Forgive me for bumping this old thread, but I just found this board. (I looked around and found quite a bit of intelligent football conversation - very refreshing!) And being a Seahawk fan, I had to weigh in on this.
flutie2phelan nailed it (as did several others) with:
None of us has any problem with going with the eyes on the field. But we do tend to develop problems when the linesman comes loping in from the side ... marking an intended spot with his right hand ... before he changes to a touchdown signal overhead.
Innumerable replays show that this must have happened just after R'burger - flat on the ground - shoved the ball a yard forward across the line ... and looks imploringly at his pal in stripes.
But then there was the discussion about this picture...
...and whether that was a football or an arm. That got me to thinking, what does the actual SB40 football look like? As it turns out,
Now, I admit to being biased, but I can't come to the conclusion that in that muddy picture, the arm/football looks anything like the footballs the NFL was using during that game. Therefore, it's got to be an arm.
For what it's worth, the Steelers did what it took to win, and the Seahawks didn't. I don't begrudge them the win. But the officiating absolutely stunk -- and anyone claiming that the officiating didn't have a direct impact on the outcome of the game is either a Steeler fan, a Seahawk hater, or on the NFL payroll. The NFL desperately needs to hire their refs full time, and give them training year-round. And from the looks of things, they also need to have some electronic means of tracking the precise location of the ball. This wouldn't be the first time a Seahawks opponent was awarded a TD because a QB's head crossed the line.
Oh yeah, one other thing. You guys were robbed on that interception. That Ben Watson run all the way across the field to slam Champ Bailey out at the 1 yard line was just unbelievable! That was one of the best plays I've seen in my entire life!
And leave it to this years refs to not call it a touchback when the ball clearly went into the endzone...
