Defensive Backs - scouting the prospects

No, he always sucked, just more draftniks have taken the time to watch him knowing he was a senior and suddenly the hype generated by USC and his speed no longer carry him.

I should have remembered the level of that defense he was playing in during 2008. That was one of the best college defenses that I have seen in my short lifetime.

Box, we seem pretty set at safety. What do you think of either one of Berry/Rashad Jones/Mays' ability to convert to cornerback in this system? I really like Berry, but I don't think he'll be available. Nor do I think it will be a big enough need to invest a first round pick in. Just intersted in your thoughts more or less.

Of all of those guys, Berry is the only one who could play CB in the NFL. He's got great straight line speed to stay with WR on fly routes and pretty fluid hips to change directions. He's kind of similar to Meriweather where you could put him at CB or S, but like Meriweather he's probably better off at S.

Everyone compares him to Ed Reed b/c of his nose for the ball, ball skills, and ability to diagnose plays, which is very true. But when I watch him play I think he's actually more like Troy Polamalu, who is great at diagnosing plays but is also a great blitzer, hard hitter who wraps up well, and comes up great in run support.

He's going to be a real gamebreaker on defense. I think he's a better fit as a safety where he can roam, make plays on the ball, blitz, lay the wood on WR, and come up in run support. Imagine the fun BB would have with a guy who can play FS, SS, and CB in the NFL. He'd be a nice weapon to use to screw with Manning's head like when Rodney and Law would switch positions. That versatility is yet another reason why he's such a great prospect.

CB is starting to become a bigger concern for me with Bodden likely hitting the market. I liked the idea of looking at Cromartie b/c the Chargers seem to want to rid themselves of him, but I don't know if BB would be interested and I don't think AJ Smith would want to trade a talented corner to a rival.

Patrick Robinson is really starting to grow on me. I love his physical play in press coverage and he seems to have all the tools of guy who can become a great cover corner. He's got great speed too, as he ran well in the combine I remember him running down Noel Devine from behind. Tom Shaw has hyped him as his next great CB and a "freak." His downfall is that he's a little too aggressive at times, but I like aggressive corners who are confident. He's an underrated tackler as well who will come up in run support. He doesn't shy away from contact. I know many scouts were concerned with his supposed drop-off in play in 09 but Florida State's defense was just abysmal in general for the most part.

I heard that Robinson was very inconsistent on tape according to Mayock.

My fav CB for us is Devin Mccourty from Rutgers. Bill has shown he loves explosive Cbs with quick twitch athleticism that can flip their hips on a dime. Mccourty had a great 40, 3 cone, 20 yd shuttle, and broad jump. He also possesses a very strong work ethic, great athletic ability, and great instincts which to me is one of the most important criteria for successful NFL Cbs. I also like Kareem Jackson from Bama and my late rd sleeper is Vern Verner from UCLA who will be an excellent nickelback/#2 which is becoming a more and more important position in the NFL.

"Was suspended for taking part in a widespread academic cheating scandal --- All the ability in the world but doesn't always play up to his impressive physical tools --- Extremely talented and could be special but potential is still more impressive than the actual production."

I'm particularly leery of lines 1 and 2 there.
