It all comes down to if you believe in the core tenants of how BB runs the football operation. Its unbending, uncompromising and unbreakable. BB believes that is the foundation to winning culture.

For some people its a matter of convenience and circumstances in how its applied.

For BB its a code.

People find that tough to understand or accept and I understand that.

For people who have been in the military know exactly what I am talking about.

Hey guys, I hate to say it, but until something definitive comes out about why Butler was benched, there’s not really much of a reason to discuss it.

I would say that that is precisely the reason why it must be discussed because right now there is simply no reason to not have played Butler and that is just idiotic.

My father was a psychiatrist and I and other members of my family have spent years working in mental health fields, none of us have ever seen what you are claiming. The idea that marijuana is a gateway drug has been thoroughly debunked for a long long time, and that’s why it’s now being legalized across the country. What really destroys minds and bodies are pharmaceuticals, that’s why America has an opioid crisis and not a pot crisis.

Can we thumb tack this post to the top of the forum? Although I personally react negatively to marijuana, it’s incredibly obvious that what you write is 100% accurate. In addition to pharmaceuticals (and you are spot on regarding those), alcohol abuse is also a crisis and causes way more addiction problems, deaths, and family trauma than marijuana. But it’s all good because of those really cool Bacardi ads in magazines.

Without the benefit of announcers pointing out Butler being benched, could you tell he wasn't in the game? When did you discover he hadn't taken a defensive snap?

I'm picturing myself walking out of that stadium after such a defensive letdown, then overhearing someone say, "Hey, I just heard Butler played no snaps on D," and being utterly confused.

At some point we realized Butler wasn't playing, but we didn't know he hadn't been playing at all, and figured he was either sick or injured. On the first TD I said to those around me, was that Butler that got burned? And then on the replay we saw it was Rowe and thought he was just covering Jeffries on that play. Then it was 3rd & long and 1st down ALL DAY. Couldn't believe it after the game at a restaurant where they were showing highlights and said Butler was benched and showed him crying during the National Anthem.

I share Deb's anger

This defense was #1 in points allowed from week5-17. With Butler as starting CB. Butler who led the secondary in tackles and pass deflections. Who made a pro bowl in 2015 and second team NFL all pro in 2016.

No Butler RUINED the Pats defense. Chung is a great in the box SS suddenly had to play slot. Rowe is a decent slot corner had to play outside and got burned repeatedly. McCourty an elite FS had to cover Ertz instead. The secondary had musical chairs on them minutes before kickoff. Players prepared 2 weeks then were given completely different assignments at the national anthem.

It would be like starting a NBA finals game and right before tipoff tell your guard he's now a forward, now your forward has to play center.

BB felt Malcolm was not prepared to play in the game, be there for his teammates and help the team win. He was not ready to do his job.

If Bill felt he was prepared and would be a player his teammates could count on and coaches could trust carry out his assignments, hed be out there.

What people are not comprehending is Malcolm's behavior and actions went far beyond a simple rule violation smoking a little weed.

Because the ultimate standard of the Pats is supposed to be, "for the good of the team." Bench him for the 1st half but put him in for the 2nd, then leave him at the stadium after the game, if you are that pissed. Don't throw away the Super Bowl for the rest of the team. Look at their faces and their heartbreak. Yes, Malcolm screwed up and needs to be held accountable (if you believe some or all of the reports) but this is the Super Bowl, not some regular season game against the Jets. This was not the time to apply your standards rigidly because it undermined your ultimate standard.

Standards are standards.
We don’t know any of the details.
Butler was an emotional wreck at the national anthem. What happened before that? How did he respond to not starting? Did it start out as not starting and butler flipped out and lost it and they decided he wasn’t capable of having his head in the game?

Who knows there are a million possibilities.
The one I can’t accept is that belichick for no real reason just decided to not pkay a starter and as the game wore on saw the defense struggle and just said “ha I’ll

It just amazes me that in a team culture where everyone relies in each other a player does something so egregious that the greatest cia h of all time feels it necessary to remove him from the team and no one wants to look at the blame the player deserves. When you are willing to do that it becomes apparent that there was a lot more to this issue than a whimsical decision.

Utter bollocks, my missus is a psychiatric nurse and sees every day the damage done by weed, she sees many people whereby they try weed once and have there life's destroyed when the chemical balance in there brains are altered by such drugs. Several are 20+year cases.

With all due respect, I think you may be confusing causation and correlation. Many people who use brain-altering drugs also happen to use marijuana. But marijuana does not yet you are claiming unless it is laced with something bad. Alcohol and opioids do cause damage, along with a host of other drugs like meth.

GTFO with that crap. Belichick has had unparalleled success due to an unwavering commitment to his rules and his method of everyone buying in 100%. That unwavering system has given you a lifetime of great memories and the best team of the modern era.

Now, all of a sudden, that methodology and coaching style is inconvenient for you because the other 20 some odd defensive players who got snaps all crapped the bed?

Furthermore, it's nice to say "the Pats D would have gotten more stops with Butler because he's better than Bademosi, Rowe or Richards" but that's just your speculation. The same type many mock other team's fans for. "We would have won if...." means nothing and is entirely unprovable. Putting Butler in changes many things which alters the entire sequence of the game. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse. Just because his replacements performed poorly doesn't mean Butler would have been the difference between a win and a loss.

You want a system which churns out AFCCG appearances yearly? Then you should be backing the idea of benching a guy your HOF coach deemed unworthy to play.

The idea that Belichick "gave the game away" or "blew it" is laughably entitled and stupid sounding. None (or very few) of the Butler apologists whined about Belichick cutting or benching other guys for various performance or disciplinary issues as long as the team won. You want the wins but you want to pick and choose when Belichick should stick to his methods. It's ridiculous.

The Big Nickel wasn't working. They stuck with it anyway. That's still on the coaching. That's still on Belichick. And that's without even commenting on the Butler situation.

When did belichick ever say he benched him for no reason? When did belichick ever say game plan? Belichick said what is best for the team and later said something like it was many different reasons.

What do you want belichick to do, publicly release the real reasons and trash the player? He isn’t going to do that. He never has. He never will.

I said essentially. Meaning I don't believe he got benched for anything other than their game plan. Meaning speculating that Malcolm was a rule breaker or was caught with drugs/drinking is pointless because it didn't happen according to our own coach.

He said it wasn't discipline. His own words, "We put the players and game plan out there that we thought would be the best, like we always do".

Some of you choose to believe everything Bill says until he says something you don't like or makes no sense to you and now he suddenly is in coverup mode. Maybe it's really exactly as he ****ing said.

They picked a game plan they thought would work. It didn't and we lost. And they screwed up. It happens in literally every game to at least one team. We just happened to be on the wrong side this time.

Because Belichick is the head coach and Malcolm doesn’t decide when he wants to play. Is that a serious question? My god man.

He decides if he wants to follow the team rules that allow him to play. The other 52 guys didn’t have a problem whth that.

Belichick has already said it had nothing to do with behavioral issue. So if he voluntarily sat him, it looks even worse.

Of course it had to do with issues. Belichick is never going to make those comments publicly. You are grasping on to something ridiculous. And you know better.

What Bill has built here is a winning culture that is unbending and uncompromising. It has a value system. It has accountability. For it to work players need to do their job. Its is on 100% of the time. It is not a light switch.

Everyone was ok with it when the win 5 Super Bowls. Now they are not?

In this case I agree with @PatsDeb that the punishment may not fit the crime, but we won't know for sure until/if we find out what that crime was. Are there any violations that you consider minor enough to allow Butler to play? I think there are.
