Day 1 FA - Will YOU Be Able to Keep It in Perspective?

LOL - - I thought I should channel Shaughnessy with that thread title. I now feel dirty (and ignorant). Will shower promptly.

The subject is not signing one's own.

The subject was about signing NEW FA's.

If you read Bedard's column, he emphasizes that a new FA is less of an addition in the early games becuase he has to learn a new system and catch up. he posits that it is more efficient to resign your own if the player is a good fit.

I agree and disagree with Bedard. In most instances, I think its better (because its usually cheaper) to sign a player who you already have a good idea of how they perform in your system than to bring in a new face. However, I think a player like Revis would be an upgrade over Talib (I also thought that Amendola was a possible upgrade over Welker too). I think defense and the corner position in general is less of a learning curve than receiver or QB or safety. Positions that require a greater knowledge of a system are probably better positions to look in house as opposed to out of house. There are other instances where upgrades can be had for a similar to slightly greater price (Woodyard over spikes for example). I think a case by case basis is a fairer way to look at free agency.

The problem with the whole Free agency thing is that like Bedard says, there is no correlation with big signings and wins. I think thats because of the teams doing those signings not necessarily the signings themselves. Bad teams usually have more money to spend and are more eager to act. They're trying to build their core through free agency as opposed to adding to it. I think their are some players on the market this year that can significantly upgrade our core. I like most probably don't care when the signings happen but more about if. If we get out priced we get out priced. Fans shouldn't be upset with players like Mike Wallace going to the Dolphins on day one (idk if it was a day 1 deal).

No I can not Tom and Bill will only be in New England together 3 more years tops.
We need to win one more for Bill and Tom.

I understand you're saying this sarcastically, and I'm fluent in that language, but Brady will be 37 to start the season. The window actually is closing...

Why is winning without Brady an impossibility?

Did they cut Amendola yet? Remember, they MUST cut Amendola by 4 p.m. If they don't cut Amendola, I will have to buy an Amendola filter at the cost of untold thousands to filter out the avalanche of Amendolas that will surely cascade forth from the obsessed brain pan of a certain Amendola hater.

^^^ Case in point. These posters sound less insane than they did in 2009 or 2010. That's because they have a point. Not saying the team needs to go HAM and sign every FA available to them, but they do need to make some moves and those moves should start with either re-signing their own (Edelman/Talib) or finding suitable replacements or upgrades (Sanders, Nicks, Tate/Revis).

I agree that, in a vacuum, Revis would be a big upgrade over Talib.

However, reality doesn't occur in a vacuum and the extra $5-6 million Revis will demand over Talib then eliminates chances of extending McCourty.

I'd rather have Talib and an extended McCourty than Revis and a bargain basement FS.

Better yet, let the oft injured Talib leave and let Dennard and Logan Ryan (who came on the second half like gangbusters) patrol CB and spend the bucks on a monster/intimidator Safety and big weapon Tight End.

Tim Tebow. That was very appropriately handled by this board.

Wow, surprised to see you say this manx, i thought the Tebow supporters were clearly batsh.t crazy and behaved as such when we all knew he wouldn't be there on opening day. However, i will take the high road, and i mean that literally as i just had a brownie, and say that the Tebow supporters were OK.

It's all good, time for another brownie.

I actually have a good deal of confidence that Belichick is well aware of this and that his only goal is a winning the Super Bowl, he isn't looking to be good. I think he will build this team significantly this offseason, it just may not be the way we want with big name free agents. I think the released player market is more enticing to him and he will make his hay there, and not on day one of free agency. If he keeps Talib and Edelman then he is off to a good start and they won't have to start by backfilling holes created early in free agency. I think Peppers and allen will both be in play, and while Byrd or whitner may not be options a guy like Malcolm Jenkins may be.

well, to be honest, Ivan...a good 2/3's of those "posters" were the work of one insane cretin named Remarker...better known as Markus the county jail 2nd shift hack in a sack..

Why is winning without Brady an impossibility?

Didn't say it was an impossibility. But it is unreasonable to expect unless the team gets lucky and is in the position to draft the next Rodgers to their Favre. The guys that take your stance sound like some of the guys on south Florida talk radio when Marino was getting up there. The team has the following holes/needs:

1. C
2. OG
3. WR (even with Edelman re-signing)
4. Move TE
5. DT
6. Pass rushing 3-tech
7. DE (possibly multiple of the team is looking for a rotation)
8. LB
9. CB
10. SS

It's unreasonable to think that these holes are all going to get filled through the draft and signing mid-level FA's while the team let's Talib and Edelman ride off. They have the cap space to be active even before they restructure/cut Wilfork. They were competitive last year even with the injuries, but would have stood little to no chance against Seattle or SF. With a couple of well placed moves in both FA and the draft, this is a team that could easily hoist the Lombardi. They just have to tweak (not completely change) the way they normally do things. They have the resources at their disposal to do it, though.

I was never a Tevow will start guy but I thought he was the ideal team mate and a great example to the younger guys to work hard and stay on the straight and narrow.

OK, you DO need to adjust to reality.

1) "WE" do not play or make decisions. Therefore, "we" cannot do the winning.

2) Bill and Tom don't care about you, so you are wasting your time dreaming of you "winning one more for Bill and Tom".

3) WE (yes, the paying customers and loyal fans) want the Patriots to win. THEY should want to win one more for US.

Glad to fix that one for ya.

I don't think McCourty is the all-pro safety that a lot feel he is. I think he's a very good safety in a league with only a few very good safeties but depending on what Byrd gets paid, Im not sure if Im willing to up that for McCourty. Now were talking about paying McCourty top 3 money along with paying Talib top 5-7 money. Now how much is that compared to maybe paying Revis and whatever Harmon is making as McCourty's in house replacement with 2 years in the system under his belt. This is team building, and probably along the lines of what BB and co are doing/have done.

Very good points, Kontra.

The only thing I would quibble about is to move your #10 to #1.

I also think your #3 is too high - - if they get your #4 (move TE), what they have now at WR looks an awful lot better - - I'd let those kids develop in the system. Too much was asked of them last year because the Pats had **** salad at TE.

draft a SS with our first pick??

Research 1960-2000

HA HA!! Cmon the 2017 draft is looking like a great QB class and by then Amendola will be due for an injury free year. Don't panic! All we need is a couple more depth signings and we're good.

You're right! Ask any of our new guests from last summer - - this board handled it miles better than the Broncos or Jets boards did.

Pssstttt.....given the history, maybe it's not the boards, maybe it's Tebow......

Or maybe it was me merely making a lighthearted comment.
