Not sure what you're reading or not these days. Mayo doesn't clock in or out. He basically lives in a cave in Gillette... He was elected a captain in his sophomore season for that reason as much as his ROY talent. Then he got injured and basically battled just to get back as soon as he could and he was nowhere near healthy all season but he played through it.

He was elected ROY for making a ton of tackles 99% of which were 4 or more yards down field.

Not sure if you have ever played this game, but as a player when you walk into a locker room, you know real quick who the guys in charge of the locker room are; the guys that set the tone and the guys that command respect. The guys that keep everybody rowing the same way and the guys that deal with the malcontents.

Being elected captain is important, but taking command of a locker room is different and very important for team chemistry. So far I have seen none of that from Mayo. The Thomas revolt would have been the perfect incident for Mayo to set up and squash it so it did not affect the locker room.

Spikes will be a Pat. Four years of production at highest level. Graded A for his position. Role will be rotation with 2 down duties. Played faster than his times. Perceived as a mid first last year. Now 2nd to fourth round guy= VALUE. Junior Seau was a very slow ILB for the Pats...but effective. Spikes could fill a void and get Guyton off the field for run downs.

Right but guys like Watson are saying Mayo is that guy. I will agree with you that Mayo and for that matter Wilfork and Warren should have been able to crush the AD situation better but from the sounds of it Springs and some others played a part in that faction. It would have been nearly impossible in past years where the leadership was so much deeper and more established. There was one article where Colvin especially delighted in keeping AD in line. There's also having locker room cred because you've won.

In fairness, it's not like there were a ton of safety prospects (or reasonably-priced FAs) who were clearly superior to Meriweather available in 08 and 09 either, Jarius Byrd notwithstanding.

This is true.
