Cris Collinsworth‘s interception before halftime

@Les archambeau I suppose I should explain my perspective. I don't think Collinsworth is particularly interesting for the die-hard fan, such as people on this forum (including myself). There's nothing noteworthy about his commentary to this sort of community because he says stuff we already know about beforehand (and storytelling doesn't count).

That said, NBC is still a big studio with millions of viewers in prime-time. What of the more uninformed fans around the country, or people who are trying to get into watching football? He talks a lot, but it stands to reason that the average casual fan can pick up a lot of things in one game that way.

I truly appreciate a guy like Romo in the booth, personally. I think he's far and away the best commentator in the major networks. I think people on this forum and other dedicated communities have a general idea of what their teams are good at, what sort of plays they like to run, what they like to do with their personnel, etc. and Romo manages to affirm most of it. People rag on him for "talking too much" but I suspect those people don't really enjoy the intricacies of the game.

Not a fan of night games, but Collinsworth is listenable as he likes to talk up TB12. And then again, we don't have to listen to Eye-an Eagle that week.

This! It was really their incredulity at the stupidity that was unraveling in front of our eyes that made that play a legend.
Absolutely perfect call of that play.

Romo is also fantastic and has some things that Collinsworth doesn't, but Cris is a much better storyteller and really "setting the scene" and talking about the bigger picture. Romo can sometimes get into a rut of trying to convince the viewer why the team losing has a shot while Cris calls it like it is.
Yup. Good way of putting it. Collinsworth is my favorite to listen to. **** him during SB 49, but still.

Former Radio "Voice of the Jets" Ian Eagle.

Thanks, didn't know that.

Seriously, right?

How can you respect a guy who doesn't even know how to pronounce his own name?

Totally agree on this. The first time I heard Romo, maybe he was just learning the ropes, but I was kind of laughing at him because he sounded so unpolished and out of place. I compared him to a drunk Ben Affleck (he looks and sounds just like him). After a few games, though, I started realizing that he is right about virtually everything he's talking about, his comments are really insightful and take you well beyond the obvious things you're seeing (or stats, figures, past events that most serious fans already know about very well), and I even like his style now. He'll often call out where the ball is going before the snap and most importantly, why he knows that based on formations, matchups, tempo, etc. It's really fascinating to hear Romo talk about the game from a player's perspective.

I think a lot of the Collinsworth hate rightfully comes from his SB49 broadcast. I get that Deflategate was a big deal at the time, but he just wouldn't let it go, reminding us after every play about the situation. It was completely obnoxious and as others have said, it essentially has ruined the ability to rewatch it with any enjoyment, unless you mute it. Did it really have to be brought up again about 8 times in the fourth quarter and indirectly on every single comment? Completely ridiculous. Could have also pointed out that every Super Bowl ball is never given to the team in advance, considering it was the Super Bowl, and those are the games where Brady has become a legend.

I'm still pissed that I have to mute any replays I watch of Super Bowl 49 due to his constant SpyGate garbage. It was almost as bad as Madden and Summerall commentating Super Bowl 36.
You Sir, have hit the nail on the head. Among the top 50 posts, ever.

Did Pat Summerall and John Madden spend the entirety of Super Bowl XXXIII blathering on endlessly about how Eugene Robinson headed an international child porn/underage sex trafficking ring and presided over a gambling empire that fixed every one of his teams' victories with the Seahawks, Packers and Falcons since 1985 and how the league had to do something about the travesty?

At least Eugene Robinson did approach a female undercover police officer posing as a prostitute on a downtown Miami street the night before the game and offered her $40 for oral sex.
