Okay, off-season insanity reaches its logical apogee.

Not that the Pats haven't given us some dream seasons, but this is the ultimate dream season. Caveat: 2007 had so much "dream" leading up to the nightmare at the end, I expect it to make several appearances, if anybody wants to play.

Here are the rules: Put your bye week wherever you want. This is YOUR NE Patriots all-time dream season.

Start with your favorite Week 1 game. Add your favorite Week 2 game. And so on, until you have the best 16-game season EVAH. 50-burgers explain themselves... if you want to add notes about what game 7 meant within THAT SEASON, or your personal reaction to it, or whatever, go ahead. ("Grogan finally shows up Bert Jones..." whatevah.)

It's the off-season. Any reason is good enough for it to be your personal best game 7 or 6 or 12 or whatever of all time.

Let's see if anybody plays... it's kind of a long assignment. If they do, the last game should be easy... 5 to choose from

2007 Season, 2007 Playoffs, SB LI to finish it
Minus the accusations.

I call this “19 wins, 0 pulse” because this season would have killed all of us. My choice of games begins with my fandom that started as a teen in 1984…

Week 1: The 2009 win over Buffalo. Pats trail by 11 with under 3 minutes left, but a TD to Watson, a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and another TD to Watson caps the unbelievable comeback. Honorable mentions go to the 2004 opener vs. Indy and Bledsoe’s game-winning drive in 1999 to get over on Parcells and Belichick in The Meadowlands.

Week 2: The 1999 comeback over Indy. Pats trailed 28-7 at halftime, then the whole 2nd half was all Bledsoe and the Patriots in the 31-28 win.

Week 3: The 1997 OT win over the Jets. Parcells’ first game in NE after bailing out the year prior. The border war was truly underway. Honorable mention goes to the 2002 OT win over KC where Priest Holmes made all of New England crap their pants.

Week 4: The 1991 comeback over Houston. A clearly inferior Pats team was up against the then powerhouse Warren Moon Oilers. Brockton’s Greg McMurtry took a Hugh Millen pass to the house late to steal the win.

Week 5: The 2001 OT win over San Diego. The first real glimpse at what we had in Tom Brady. Pats trailed by 10 midway through the 4thquarter. Honorable mentions go to the 2003 comeback vs. Tennessee and the 2010 OT win over Baltimore.

Week 6: The 2013 comeback over New Orleans. Kenbrell Thompkins! Honorable mention goes to the 2011 comeback vs. Dallas and that awesome game-winning drive late.

Week 7: The 2003 OT win in Miami. Pats block one FG, Miami pushes a short one wide and Troy Brown wins it with an 82yd TD.

Week 8: The 1989 OT win in Indy. Tied going into the 4th, the lead changes hands THREE more times before heading to OT where the Pats win it with a 51yd FG. A rare highlight in an otherwise crappy season. This was the toughest game to pick as week 8 hasn’t been historically kind to close wins; It’s either feast or famine.

Week 9: The 2002 win in Chicago. Down 27-6 in the third, the Pats stage a comeback chock full of insane plays, particularly on the final drive. Very close honorable mentions go to the 2003 comeback in Denver (intentional safety game) and the 2007 win in Indy (battle of undefeateds, Pats down 10 midway through the 4th). The stakes were bigger in these games, but I just cannot leave that Chicago game off this list.

Week 10: 1994 OT comeback over Minnesota. Bledsoe’s signature game. NFL record 45 completions. NFL record 70 attempts. Down 20-0 late in the 1st half.

Week 11: The 2013 comeback over Denver. Down 24-0 at halftime. Honorable mentions go to the 2003 OT win in Houston, the 1998 MNF win over Miami and the 1986 Hail Mary to beat the Rams. Week 11 was a good one historically.

Week 12: The 2003 win in Indy…Willie McGinest’s stuff of Edge James on 4th and goal. Honorable mentions go to the 1998 win over Buffalo on the untimed down and the 2007 win in Baltimore (premature timeout by Baltimore giving the Pats new life).

Week 13: The 2013 comeback over Cleveland. Browns go up 12 with under 3 minutes left. Pats score, recover the onside kick and score the winner.

Week 14: The 2010 win over Green Bay. Pats trail 17-7 in the first half, but get the famous Dan Connolly kickoff return to ignite the spark. Green Bay still goes up 6 in the 4th before the Pats take control. Honorable mention goes to the 2001 OT win in Buffalo (the David Patten knocked unconscious fumble/non-fumble game).

Week 15: The 2000 OT win in Buffalo. This game is still one of the most visually stunning games in Pats history as well as one of the most comical in a keystone cops kind of way. Snow, hail, high winds, players skidding all over the artificial turf, nine fumbles(!), 3 missed FGs from 30yds or closer including 2 that barely left the ground, Doug Flutie running for his life from McGinest and company…such a crazy game to watch.

Week 16: The 1996 comeback at the NYG. Down 22-0 at the half, Pats storm back. Troy Brown with the insane 3rd down catch from his back on the turf. Ben Coates wins it on 4th down. Honorable mention goes to the 1986 MNF win in Miami (Grogan-to-Morgan for the game-winner, Boomer Esiason and the Bengals stunned into silence on TV as their season is ended).

Divisional: The 2001 Snow Bowl. Honorable mention goes to the 2006 game in San Diego.

AFCCG: The 2001 win in Pittsburgh. Down goes Brady. On comes Bledsoe who starts hot, then is downright scary the rest of the way. Special teams TDs create the breathing room for Pittsburgh’s inevitable comeback. The D holds strong as Kordell gets picked off twice late. Honorable mention goes to the 2011 win over Baltimore (chopping the game-winning TD out of Lee Evans’ hands, then the shanked game-tying FG). I’d like to also include a special honorable mention to the 1985 Squish the Fish win. It doesn’t fit the spirit of this list, but having lost 18 straight in Miami leading up to that game did not give a lot of fans confidence. Pats picked the perfect time to get that monkey off their back.

Super Bowl: LI. Need I say more?

Millen to McMurty whhhhutttttttt? Now that's a guy who does his homework... tx for the walk down memory lane!

Millen to McMurty whhhhutttttttt? Now that's a guy who does his homework... tx for the walk down memory lane!

Weeks 4 and 8 were the hardest to fill, followed by 3 and 14. The rest were pretty easy, especially the midseason games.

Funny to think that Hugh Millen was thought to be a savior of sorts after the poopbag of QB play in 1990.

There's very little to add to @chris_in_sunnyvale 's awesome list, but here are a few others to consider.

Week One: 9/19/71. Patriots were coming off a league-worst 2-12 season; they're facing an Oakland team that had advanced to the AFCCG the previous year. Jim Plunkett throws two touchdowns in his first NFL game and the Patriots upset the heavily favored Raiders in the first regular season game played at Schaefer Stadium, 20-6.

Week Two: 9/16/07: In the first game after Fuhrer Goodell's spygate sanctions - and the first meeting between these two after the Lights Out Game - the Patriots show no mercy and crush the soul of a very good San Diego team, 38-14.

Week 4: 10/10/71: Plunkett throws touchdown passes to Randy Vataha and Ron Sellers, and Jim Nance runs 50 yards for the final touchdown. Pats shut the Jets out 20-0, for their first win over NYJ in six years.

Week 5: 10/13/74: embarking on the first of three consecutive road games, the Patriot defense intercepts four passes and shuts the Jets out 24-0 at Shea Stadium. The defense sacked Joe Namath four times, and limited him to 7-21 passing before he was mercifully replaced. With the victory the Pats advance to an NFL-best 5-0 record; at that point over the last two weeks New England had outscored their opponents 66-3. Unfortunately they missed the playoffs due to a rash of injuries in the second half of the season, but they did end a streak of seven consecutive losing seasons.

Week 7: 10/27/74: The Bob Windsor Game. The Vikings took a 14-10 lead with a minute and a half to go on a Fran Tarkenton scramble. The Pats came back, with Plunkett hitting Randy Vataha on a 55 yard bomb to put the ball on the 10-yard line, but time was winding down. On the final play of the game Windsor caught a pass short of the goal line and was hit, blowing his knee out on what would essentially be a career ending injury. Windsor spun on his one good leg, twisted and dragged a Viking defender, barely crossing the goal line for the game winning touchdown as the Pats improved to 6-1.

Week 15: 12/10/78: Patriots clinch their first division title in 15 years with a 26-24 come from behind victory over the Bills. Steve Grogan drove the Pats down field on the final drive of the game and David Posey, filling in for an injured John Smith, kicked the game winner as the clock ticked to zero. Unfortunately the effect of the Sullivans' miserly ways over the years would cause everything to unravel in the ensuing two weeks.

Week 16: 12/28/63: Before the concept of tiebreakers, the Patriots and Bills finished the regular season with identical records. The Pats went up to Buffalo and forced six turnovers while holding the Bills to 7 yards rushing. The 26-8 victory gave them a franchise-first AFL East division title.

Agree that while the 2001 Snow Game (aka tuck rule game) deserves top honors for a division game, the 2006 Lights Out Game at San Diego is right up there as a close second.

I put the week 2 loss to the Jets in 2001 for my pick that week

Holy Cow man. Great list. Enjoyed reading that.

The Ben Coates 22 point comeback Giants game is one of my favorites. I hadn't seen my brother in years and there we were sitting in a TGIF's up in Portland Maine watching that game while drinking a few beers. Great day and a great game.

I loved seeing Vataha in there a time or two... we have had some great tight ends over the years... obviously culminating in the guy that'll be called the GTEOAT, Gronk. You could write a book on the tragedies and triumphs of Patriots tight ends just from one draft class, but broaden it over the ages and you'd really have something. Well, at least everybody who played the position in the Northeast would buy it.

Chris, your list is outstanding, but I must ask.... not even an honorable mention for the 2014 Divisional against Baltimore?

Holy oversight, Batman! 14pts down in the second half, "Postseason Flacco" with the ball last...yeah, there were some sphincter-tightening moments. Maybe it was the home crowd, or that clearly SuperTom came to play that night* that made the situation seem less dire than 01 and 06 and thus it slipped my mind.

I deliberately gave no other Super Bowls honorable mention because it pretty much goes without saying the others deserve it. No blowouts in the bunch.

Regards,
Chris

* Versus his weak postseason performances against the Ravens from 09-12.

Vataha wasn't a TE

This hurts my brain..

Week 1 - defeat kc 38-17. After the game we are accused of wearing socks that are 3/4 mm too long. Espn and nfl fans go bonkers, biggest scandal in nfl history. Hines ward and donovan mcnabb special guests on first take discussing how big the advantage the socks were and whether they would have won in 2004 if not. Mark brunell crying like a bi***.

In other words, predictable response.

Bb and brady pissed as ****, each get a 7 year extension. 16-0

Divisional round we are goinf against the colts. Our backs all happen to be nursing injuries so we sign derrick cullors out of retirement, who must be in his 50s by now. He rushes for 267 yards and 4 tds as we win 41-17.

Afcc we go against the steelers. Its 48-0 late and instead of kneeling, brady hands the ball to james harrison and points him to the end zone. Our sideline does a golf clap as harrison awkwardly jogs into the end zone and then is handed a cookie. He then walks to the sideline with his head down realizing what just happened. Final score 48-7.

Sb we are about to lose after a missed fg that would have tied it. 30 seconds left no timeouts. Twitter is exploding in celebration saying how brady is done, pats havent played anyone all year, division stinks thats the only reason theyre here, pats losing because they cant cheat this time, etc . #cliff trending worldwide. As dakk prescott goes to kneel he stumbles due to the new regulation socks each player is required to wear after the huge 'scandal', fumbles the ball, and cyrus jones returns it for the game winning td. We win #6 and brady /bb stay another 7 years.

Vataha wasn't a TE

Damn the early onset alzheimers. I must have fused him with the Russ Francis "hang loose" hand sign, which was billed as Hawaiian at the time but would now just be "surfer" stuff. Unless I made that up too which is possible. Hey interesting walk down Russ Francis lane...

A TIGHT END WHO HANGS REAL LOOSE

In the accuracy department... Fairbanks ditching on the eve of the playoffs... Parcells signing with the J E T E on the eve of the Super Bowl... I wonder what a kick in the nads that is to good teams past... Now that we're in the greatest dynasty ever, a tweak here and a tweak there, and is this already a "multi-era" dynasty?

::shrug:: it's the off-season. But what is with coaches that give up on this team?
