Compensatory picks for 2013?

I don't think we're done in free agency, though the rest of the guys we get might be guys who were cut, so it's worth thinking about. But I saw Curran mention we might have some comp picks next year - which would be helpful given we stand at five picks for 2013 right now.

But it was my understanding of the rules that basically any addition to the team undoes a subtraction in terms of the equation. Wouldn't Lloyd & Fanene essentially knock out Anderson & BJGE even if the contracts on the latter two are bigger? I don't see how we can end up with comp picks next year as things stand.

Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, unfortunately, I think we would not be receiving any comp picks. The bulk of our signings have been UFAs, and there have been several (Gregory, Lloyd, Fells, Allen, Fanene, Gonzalez, etc., etc.).

The biggest factor in determining compensatory picks is salary, so I would think that the Patriots are not in line to receive any comp picks next year. I would agree that Lloyd & Fanene most likely make the loss of Anderson & BJGE a wash - and that's prior to considering any of the other free agent signings as well.

By my count, the Pats have signed 13 TRUE free agents.. They've only lost 4 and there are 6 of their own that are unsigned.

Signing them doesn't matter if they don't actually make the 53. . . . that said, odds are enough will that the Pats won't get any this year.
