I'm sorry guys.. I just don't see a 31st ranked defence winnng an AFC Championshp.. much less a Superbowl.
I don't care who your QB is.
Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers are pretty damn good too..
They got their reality check.
Yours is on its way.
Maybe Next Year.. Brady ain't going anywhere and your offense is relatively young.
Do the Giants and their 27th ranked defense also have no shot? If they do have a chance, where exactly is the cutoff line; 28th ranked? Maybe 29th or even 30th? Please help me out on this ...
I'm not sure if you're serious, seriously uninformed about the game of football, just hoping as a fan that stat might actually mean something useful, or are simply trolling. I really thought the obviously gaping holes in evaluating teams (defenses in particular) by yardage ranking had been pretty much bludgeoned to death by now, but apparently not; let's try a Cliff notes version.
- Games are won and lost by points scored, not yards gained or allowed
- A defense that forces a turnover is likely to go back on defense again soon, resulting in the probability of even more yards allowed.
- Turnovers and red zone efficiency are far more important than yardage and time of possession.
- How did the 2009 Saints do?
- How did the 2006 Colts do?
In the most important (really only important) stat - points allowed - the Patriots defense ranks 15th. Middle of the pack. Similar to where Baltimore's offense ranks (12th).
Would you make the same statement if the Patriots defense ranked 15th in yards allowed?
The talking heads on tv repeat that stat because it makes for a good sound bite and gets people's attention, which in turn helps their ratings. But in reality there's no correlation between defensive yardage stats and winning football.
Of the top ten teams in defensive yardage rankings, five made the playoffs and five did not. Of the bottom five teams in defensive yardage rankings (drum roll please) ... yep, you got it: five made the playoffs and five did not. Wow, I can definitely see a correlation between defensive yardage rankings and winning football there.
The last point (the offense is too young) is as off base as me saying the entire Ravens defense is old and slow because it includes Ray Lewis.
